Freedom Bound: Law, Labor, and Civic Identity in Colonizing English America, 1580-1865, by Christopher Tomlins

Freedom Bound is about the origins of modern America - a history of colonizing, work, and civic identity from the beginnings of English presence on the mainland until the Civil War. It is a history of migrants and migrations, of colonizers and colonized, of households and servitude and slavery, and of the freedom all craved and some found. Above all it is a history of the law that framed the entire process. Freedom Bound tells how colonies were planted in occupied territories, how they were populated with migrants - free and unfree - to do the work of colonizing, and how the newcomers secured possession. It tells of the new civic lives that seemed possible in new commonwealths, and of the constraints that kept many from enjoying them. It follows the story long past the end of the eighteenth century until the American Civil War, when - just for a moment - it seemed that freedom might finally be unbound.

Review
"Freedom Bound is a truly magisterial work by one of the finest minds currently working in the field of legal history. It is about no less a topic than the origins of modern America - and, in particular, about the law that framed its genesis and its early development. In this exceptionally erudite study, Christopher Tomlins succeeds in achieving an unusual 'thickness' of description, notable alike for its breadth and depth, its subtlety and its comprehensiveness. Even more, he brings an acute analytic eye to a story of enormous complexity, making this a must-read for anyone with a serious interest in either modern American history or law and society." - John Comaroff, University of Chicago and American Bar Foundation

"Beautifully written, deeply researched, and elegantly argued, Freedom Bound is legal history that changes the way we understand U.S. history. Tomlins masterfully retells the story of America's founding by following the developing relationships among labor, law, and civic identity. While focused on early America, Freedom Bound speaks broadly to questions about freedom and equality that continue to define the nation's history into the twenty-first century." - Laura F. Edwards, Duke University

"An ambitious effort to remake the landscape of the history of the origins of American culture, Tomlins' learned and masterful volume may well turn out to be the most important work published in American history over the past quarter century. Transcending the conventional disciplinary categories - England and America, colonial and national - that contribute to the myopia of so many scholars, he leads his reader through a complex, sober, penetrating, and highly persuasive analysis of the fundamental and interactive role of labor, law, and civic imperatives in shaping American society from the late sixteenth century to the American Civil War. Challenging many existing orthodoxies, including the depiction of the American Revolution as a sharp break with the colonial past, it deserves the careful attention of any serious student of, not only the American past, but of the establishment of settler, colonial, and national regimes all over the globe." - Jack P. Greene, Johns Hopkins University

"Take time to savor this magisterial book, the fruit of decades of research and reflection. Christopher Tomlins brilliantly revises our understanding of the ideas and practices that shaped the lives of working people, households, and politics, in an account that stretches from England's Atlantic empire to the eve of the U.S. Civil War. Be warned: many familiar generalizations lie shattered." - Linda K. Kerber, University of Iowa

"Christopher Tomlins has written a passionate, provocative, brilliant book about how law enabled English colonizers to justify taking what was not theirs and then to keep and work what they had taken. With wide-ranging erudition, he uncovers the legalities that shaped what the English expected to find; what they saw; how they interpreted what they found; how they justified what they did; and what social, political, and legal structures they erected in America. Freedom Bound is, by any standard, a magisterial work of stunning originality." - Bruce H. Mann, Harvard Law School

"This sweeping and superb magnum opus is a fascinating account of intricate patchworks of disparate legal systems and codes that ranges all across British North America. Law was anything but a national singularity; rather, it encompassed plural discourses and institutions. The constantly evolving relationship between various freedoms and unfreedoms gives the work a powerful and poignant story line." - Philip Morgan, Johns Hopkins University

"From the beginnings of colonization of the American mainland to the American Civil War, few historians have the knowledge or stamina to rewrite the narrative of American history on such a broad scale. Christopher Tomlins does and has: Freedom Bound is the story of how, from its first imaginings, freedom was bound, limited to white males, secured by the land Native Americans had claimed and populated and by the productive and reproductive labor of wives and slaves. Colonial America is not a time apart; rather it is, in Tomlins' retelling, the formative era of modern America. This is a demanding book - demanding in length, in the range of methodologies it so expertly employs, but most of all in its conclusions. Majestic. Unrelenting. Haunting. Unanswerable." - Barbara Young Welke, University of Minnesota

"Tomlins shows how the vast expanse of land available to British colonizers in North America created the conditions for unfreedom. Scarce labor - free and bound - had to be policed. As a technology of power, law was core to the project of creating the blueprints for the plural forms of colonial governance that provided flexibility in disciplining labor. Freedom Bound takes us from British workshops to the marchlands of North America, from America's initial European settlement to its struggle, after independence, as an expansive republic with the legacy of slavery. More importantly, with deftness, intellectual ambition, and remarkable erudition, it forces us to reconsider how new worlds harbor both potential utopias and dystopias. One word best describes this book: magisterial." - Steven Wilf, University of Connecticut

"What we have long needed is an original and challenging interpretation of early America as a whole. Is there another recent, and not so recent, book that has offered or even attempted the scope and provocation given in Freedom Bound? I can't think of one."  Sam Middleton, Journal of American Studies

"Comparative history can suggest how to read the past anew-particularly comparative perspectives inspired by so broad-ranging and thoughtful a work as Freedom Bound." -Tamar Herzog and Richard J. Ross, William and Mary Quarterly

"Freedom Bound illuminates and rewrites what the book marks off as a long foundational moment-a moving equilibrium a quarter of a millennium long-in early English American history. Through the lens of land and labor, Christopher Tomlins's text makes a case for the essential unity of this period with analytic reach, moral force, and literary sensitivity, extending across an expanse of enormous spatial and cultural diversity."  Julia Adams, William & Mary Quarterly

"Tomlins is not the first person to write about the history of law that way. But I think he is more articulate than others have been in explaining exactly what he is doing and why he is doing it. It is this clarity of his method that I find especially valuable." -Stuart Banner, William and Mary Quarterly

"Freedom Bound should - and I very much hope will - revolutionize the way we think about the history of American law and American history generally."  Peter Onuf, Journal of Legal Education

"... a magisterial synthesis and a work of original research, this brilliant, Bancroft Prize-winning volume has much to say about the complexities of law and colonialism, but it also broadens our understanding of law and legal culture in general."  James D.  Schmidt, American Historical Review

" Freedom Bound ... is long and complex.  But it is worth the effort.  The work is suffused with an extraordinary and subtle sensibility; and there are even flashes of downright poetry.  This is an important book.  Awesome, in fact.  And also enriching: a real contribution."  Lawrence M. Friedman, Law and Politics Book Review

Worth the struggle?
By L.B.E
Tomlins' Freedom Bound provides an insightful challenge to the accepted narrative of legal history in the United States, but he does so in a way that is almost completely inaccessible. His writing style is challenging, to say the least. Tomlins shoots himself in the foot as convoluted sentence structure, legal jargon, and sheer minutia weigh down his argument. Unless you have a strong interest in legal or labor history (or are required to read this for class -- good luck), skip the book and read some of the articles it has/will spawn instead.

This book serves both as an introduction to computer architecture and as a guide to using a hardware description language (HDL) to design, model and simulate real digital systems. The book starts with an introduction to Verilog - the HDL chosen for the book since it is widely used in industry and straightforward to learn. Next, the instruction set architecture (ISA) for the simple VeSPA (Very Small Processor Architecture) processor is defined - this is a real working device that has been built and tested at the University of Minnesota by the authors. The VeSPA ISA is used throughout the remainder of the book to demonstrate how behavioural and structural models can be developed and intermingled in Verilog. Although Verilog is used throughout, the lessons learned will be equally applicable to other HDLs. Written for senior and graduate students, this book is also an ideal introduction to Verilog for practising engineers.

do not waste your money
By Dr. N.F Kerkiz
The author claims that he covered in this book what other test books failed to do. He claims that this book can be used to design a processor from start to finish. Unfortunately I bought this book and was hoping to find a detailed explanation on how to design a mini processor. After reviewing the book, I concluded that this book is a waste of money and time. For example, the book talks too much about verilog basics but did not provide a block diagram or a top level for the VeSPA processor which is used in the book. For the money I paid I was expecting to find a useful example of a mini processor design.

Too incomplete.
By D. Gorodchanin
Unfortunately, this book is more of an overview book. Don't expect to get any of the subjects presented fully explained. Some of the really important topics (like hazard detection) are only briefly mentioned. For the price it should have been at least twice as big and much more detailed.

Silence, by Deborah Lytton

Stella is a vivacious teen with a deep yearning to become an accomplished Broadway musical star. Her dreams are shattered when a freak accident renders her deaf. Struggling mightily to communicate in a world of total silence, she meets Hayden who has such a pronounced stutter she can easily read his lips because he speaks so slowly. Communication leads to connection and an unexpected romance as they learn from each other and discover their own ways to overcome setbacks, find renewed purpose and recognize their true voice.

From School Library Journal
Gr 7 Up—Sophomore Stella, to everyone's disbelief, earns the coveted lead in the school musical. She comes alive on stage—knowing with her entire being this is what she was meant to do. But then, Stella's ability to hear is taken away in a freak accident one night at a party. Along with her hearing, she loses her identity as a singer. Hayden has his own scars—physical and emotional. A stutterer, he does not have any friends and yet, he feels strongly connected to Stella from the time he first sees her in the hallway at school. After her accident, Hayden is the only one of her peers who can understand and relate to what she is experiencing. The teen lives in a world of complete silence, having to learn how to cope in a hearing world. Hayden helps her to embrace the new Stella and see that life can go on, despite her disability. When she has the chance to gain her hearing back, will Stella forget about Hayden? This bilsdungroman covers a relatively short time period, during which the protagonist reconciles the possibility of never making it to Broadway and eventually comes to realize that there is more to her than just her voice. Hayden is an enigma to readers and isn't as fully developed as Stella. A light romance develops between the two. VERDICT Recommended for libraries in need of romances for younger teens.—Stephanie Charlefour, Wixom Public Library, MI

Review
Lytton's tender tale will tug at the heartstrings. Romance fans will hang on the teens' poetry, tears, texts, and...insights about life. --Booklist

A touching story...Lytton creates believable backstories for her characters to explain why they are both wary of love...Teens who enjoyed The Fault in Our Stars and Gracefully Grayson should find plenty to relate to in this novel about different forms of communication and finding confidence despite setbacks. --Foreword Reviews

Good choice for readers wanting romance without the harder edge
By Maggie Knapp
Stella is a smart and "good kid" high school sophomore. She's thrilled to be cast as Maria in the school's production of West Side Story, and maybe just a little smitten with the handsome (and fairly nice) senior who plays Tony. But Hayden (who has "copper skin" though you might not know it from the book cover) also catches her eye, and she's intrigued by his piano skills and quiet manner. She can look right past his stutter/stammer (unlike some of the mean kids.) When a poolside accident causes Stella to lose her hearing, it is Hayden who steps up and stands by her, allowing them both to heal from injuries some of which are obvious, and others which they initially keep hidden.

What worked for me: Stella and Hayden are both likable teens. While the story has the drama of Stella's accident, their lives aren't so over-the-top plagued with issues that the book begins to feel overburdened with bad stuff going on. While there is romance, there isn't outright sex, and the kids don't use four letter words. Some characters weren't quite what I expected, like Kace, who seemed like a decent guy for most of the story.
What didn't work so well: I don't know much about lip reading, but my hard-of-hearing friend says it's easier to read lips if people will face her and speak normally. I can't imagine a stutter or stammer would make lip reading easier. There is a "too good" sweetness about the book that some readers will find cloying.
Overall, easy to recommend to readers in 8th/9th grade or so, looking for clean, non-edgy, romance.

A beautiful story!
By LG
Loved this book! Deborah has a beautiful, lyrical style of writing . . . not pretentious, but rather soft strokes of color that paint a story on your heart. The book reminded me (in tone, not story line) of Anna and the French Kiss, another YA book I loved. Deborah captures the sweetness of finding love in unexpected places, of learning more about yourself than you ever thought possible, about second chances, forgiveness (and sometimes not forgiving), changing friendships, moving on. It's the type of book that reminds me why I love reading.

Tender YA Romance
By Syd
Such a tender and innocent YA romance! I loved how this story avoided all the usual cliches found in this genre--through dynamic and complex characters. The story really makes you think about the narrow ways in which we define ourselves, yet life circumstances often force us to change. Read it with a tissue handy!

Sweet enough for young teens, complex enough for all ages!

Review
“There are few, if any, people in the world who knew Chris Kyle as well as Kevin "Dauber" Lacz. Many, like myself, knew some of Chris’s story; few, like Kevin, knew virtually all of it.

This book is about the amazing true grit of SEAL Team THREE in some of the worst days of battle in the history of the US SEAL Teams and the United States. The epitome of the SEAL attitude of “never quit” runs through Kevin’s veins and this book’s pages. A must read.” (Scott McEwen, #1 New York Times bestselling co-author of American Sniper and the nationally bestselling Sniper Elite series of novels)

“One of the very best books to come out of the war in Iraq. A natural sequel to American Sniper and a powerful, rapid-fire look into the world of an operator. An instant classic that will be of enormous value to future warriors, scholars, and anyone who cares about our military and our veterans.” (Lt. Col. Dave Grossman, bestselling author of On Killing)

"The Last Punisher takes you right onto the battlefield and into the heart of the action. A rare glimpse into the mind of a Navy SEAL—you won't be able to put it down." (Clint Emerson, New York Times bestselling author of 100 Deadly Skills)

"[Lacz's] pungent, plain-spoken account has lots of butt-kicking and some tears, and serves to remind civilian readers again that war is another world...an unapologetic tribute to the habits and attitudes of the professional warriors of SEAL Team THREE...a late but worthy arrival to the Navy SEAL memoir genre." (City Journal)

"Superb action-writing. The finest story of a SEAL team in combat: alternately violent, thoughtful, funny and raw. Always compelling, page after page. Bravo Zulu!" (Bing West, New York Times bestselling author of No True Glory: The Battle for Fallujah)

“Kevin Lacz is an honest-to-God American hero. Serving with the elite Navy Seals, Kevin faced bullets and bombs to stop terrorists from coming toward us. In The Last Punisher, Kevin tells his story in a compelling and earthy way that brings the challenges of the soldier to every page. You might already love America, but you’ll love it more after reading this book." (Mike Huckabee, 44th governor of Arkansas and #1 bestselling author of God, Guns, Grits, and Gravy)

"The Last Punisher is both frightening and exhilarating. It puts you right in the middle of the action, as if you're next to Kevin during the events he describes. His account provides a deeper understanding of the service of our most heroic elite fighters." (Willie Robertson, New York Times bestselling author of The Duck Commander Family)

"The Last Punisher by Kevin Lacz will impact the generations living through the troubles in the Middle East in much the same way All Quiet On The Western Front did those living in the aftermath of World War I. This is an important book. Vivid in detail, cranked with action, and fueled by a love for his family, his country, and his fellow man." (Andy Andrews, New York Times bestselling author of The Traveler’s Gift and The Noticer)

"A remarkable tribute to the power of teamwork and a rare honest glimpse into a brotherhood where the stakes are life and death. The Last Punisher gives the reader an essential new understanding of what our American service members have endured during the War on Terror." (John Rocker, retired Major League Baseball pitcher and director of public affairs for Save Homeless Veterans)

“An American hero’s engrossing and action-packed memoir of The Battle of Ramadi…a powerful narrative into the mindset of a sniper at war…does an outstanding job of illustrating the life of a Navy SEAL.” (Don Mann, New York Times bestselling author of Inside Team Six: My Life)

PROLOGUE

“GET YOUR S**T! All hands to the roof of Shark House!” Marc Lee’s breathless bark snapped me out of sleep.

I didn’t think as I jolted off my cot, stuck my bare feet in my Oakley boots, and grabbed my web gear, machine gun, helmet, and night-vision goggles (NVGs). I ran hot on Marc’s heels, in nothing but a pair of PT shorts and some assault gear, as we raced the hundred yards to the roof like sharks toward blood in the water.

Impending violence permeated the Euphrates’s musty breeze.

“Muj swimmers trying to attack Blue Diamond,” Marc called over his shoulder as we hit the ground-floor entrance to the house. Camp Blue Diamond was the Marine base across the river to our east. We bounded up the stairs, untied boot laces whipping our bare shins. On the roof, we joined about twenty other Teamguys, most of us in PT shorts and bare chested, the unofficial uniform for middle-of-the-night, just-out-of-your-rack muj hunting. I saw an occasional T-shirt and had to stifle a chuckle when I noticed Guy, one of our officers, and his perfect uniform. A hodgepodge of support guys intermixed among us. When Marc said all hands, he had meant all hands. Everybody wanted to get his war on.

The muj had sent a sorry contingent of maritime fighters to attack the Marine base. Blue Diamond had alerted our tactical operations center (TOC), who in turn had coordinated the perfect L-shaped ambush. We stood poised, waiting for the green light from our base defense operations center on Camp Ramadi. Our mismatched uniforms and patchwork appearance belied our deadly potential. We stood, silently, vipers waiting to strike.

Somebody was going to have a bad night.

Guy was on my left. Marc Lee and Ryan Job fell in alongside him. JP was to my right. We were new to war, but our brotherhood spanned many generations and was forged by a proud warrior tradition. We were ready.

A few spots to my right, a support guy named Neal was armed to the teeth. I stifled another chuckle. His gear was an arsenal of grenades, M4 mags, and trinkets. He had no NVGs. I turned my attention back across the quiet river. My night vision infiltrated the darkness, and I could see movement. I pushed the safety off on my gun and turned on my infrared laser.

Then the command came.

Three, two, one. Execute.

Together, we unleashed hell on the river below and the unsuspecting muj lurking in its waters. It was euphoric. I methodically delivered 150 rounds in precise eight-to-ten-round bursts. The tracers screamed across the water. Some hit and stuck; others deflected and fizzled into the night. The intense energy of American ordnance and thunder of machine guns singing all around left no doubt in my mind: I was born for this.

I looked around me at every other man doing exactly the same thing and realized that this is how it had always been. Since the first man threw a rock, to when a man chucked a spear, to when another man aimed his rifle, it has come down to a man, his weapon, and the brothers who will fight with him. At that moment, everyone who mattered to me was on that rooftop. Nothing existed beyond Ramadi. These were the men who would bring me out alive, as I would them. I had literally nothing but my gun and my brothers. I hope it will always be like this.

I didn’t notice my scalding-hot shell casing ejecting toward JP’s exposed leg to my right. I didn’t care. When the abrupt call to cease fire finally came, my ears rang, my hands tingled, and the enemy was dead or dying. I felt alive.

Someone was yelling at Neal for firing six mags at the enemy with no night vision on. We called him Shadow Stalker for the rest of the deployment. A gunner’s mate tech asked sheepishly, “Hey, man, am I going to get my Combat Action Ribbon for this?”

“Sure, man,” I said, deciding to let him revel in his glory for a little while.

I checked my left flank. Guy, Marc, and Ryan had the familiar look of satisfaction that operating a powerful weapon delivers. JP cussed the burns on his left calf from my brass. I shrugged and took a deep breath. The smell of cordite from hundreds of spent rounds mixed with a breeze from the Euphrates’s ancient waters. I put my gun on safe and hit the pressure pad for the laser. I grabbed my gear and began the walk back to my tent, wondering how many similar opportunities I’d have like this over the next seven months. I didn’t want it to change me, or us—any of us. I didn’t think ahead to the future—where I’d be as a man or a husband or father a decade later. It didn’t matter at the time. I just needed to clean my gun. I was in Ramadi, and I’d be back in my rack before the flies found the meat we’d left for them in the reeds.

Later, I lay awake for only a moment before falling into a satisfied sleep, confident in the work I’d done with the others.

I hope it will always be like this.

Thank God He Gave Us SEAL Team Warriors
By Chuck Roast
FULL DISCLOSURE: I have friends who are former Teams guys who, along the way, helped me stay safe in my career thus I do have a special place in my heart for these guys. That said, I've never met Mr. Lacz so I have no personal connection with him though I learned, after reading his book that he apparently lives in my old stomping grounds in the Panhandle.

I bought this book after seeing him on Fox & Friends talking about his book. I decided I'd buy it as a way of quietly supporting him and those who have fought for us. I figured it would be like all the other books out there where authors talks more about their accomplishment, with perhaps some embellishments here and there, mix in a little CDI (chick dig it) lingo and presto "I'm a hero." That is NOT the case at all here. Mr. Lacz gives the ground truth of war and the warriors who fight to protect our freedoms along with his own experiences, warts and all.

The Last Punisher will put you under the helmet and in the books kicking of moon dust as you walk the streets of Ramadi. But where other "warrior" books want to share only the "good" stuff, Lacz shares some of the otherwise "boring" stuff to give the reader a better perspective of how things actually happen. He talks about the number of times they got geared up, stressed trying to get to their objective, finding nothing, then stressed getting safely back home. It happens. Not every day is profitable. Yet they still paid the fee in sweat equity and fatigue only to come up empty handed. But when they were profitable, grab your backside and hold on. If you've seen the movies; American Sniper, Lone Survivor, 13 hrs, and so forth, you can easily visualize where Lacz is taking you. You can easily visualize how SEALs move from cover to cover. You walk along side of him, preparing for a direct action contact. And you're there with the guys witnessing him screwing things up.

But beyond putting you under the helmet, Lacz puts you in the head of a warrior and shares what it take to survive mentally. And why, when they come back home, they have nowhere near the difficulty readjusting to life than the other 98% of us would have. Sure their humor may be "sick" to some. Sure they may find something funny it's hitting the fan. It is something very difficult to grasp if you've never been there and Lacz takes us to there. "Teams and shhhstuff." (Forgive me Dauber but Amazon censors)

Lacz does not get into the politics of war save for the REMFs (get the book for the definition) who were calling the shots putting people in harms way oftentimes with poor judgment. The politics were clearly pay grades above his and I believe he was right to leave his opinions out of this book. For managers and supervisor, pay attention here. Learn to read your people. Learn how to feed them and how to rest them. Learn how to keep them hungry for more. And if you're not shedding tears when he shares bringing Marc Lee (HOOYAH! MARC LEE) home, you're not human and you need to get yourself checked out.

If you're an American, if you love this country, please show your support with the purchase of this book. It's such a small price to pay for what he and the SEAL Team THREE "Punishers" have given you.

Slow is smooth; smooth is fast. Be smooth and get this book today!
By Stan Stinson
"Slow is smooth; smooth is fast. This the the mantra when clearing rooms in urban combat." That is one of my favorite quotes and has many non-urban-combat applications. I think the reason this one jumped out at me is, on occasion, some have called me slow. Now, I have a new response.

If you watched or read American Sniper you need to get The Last Punisher and read the perspective from Kevin and Lindsey Lacz on the Battle of Ramadi, as well as how he got there and his life after his service ended. This book tells the story as Kevin Lacz experienced it and pays tribute to those patriots he served with and paid the ultimate sacrifice. This book will grab you in the prologue and will not let you go until you have finished the epilogue.

"I think a man is the sum of his experiences and we are constantly changed by what we see and do." That is another quote from the book that can be applied to life as well as reading this book. The experience of reading this book will change your perspective on what war is really like. If you did not already have a healthy respect for what those who serve to protect our freedoms actually do in combat, you will after reading this book. You will learn about the successes but also the mistakes made which add to its credibility for me and I suspect will for you as well. We often learn more from our mistakes than our successes.

This quote describes the patriot's heart of the author, "I carried Old Glory with me at all times, a reminder of the liberty for which we fought."

One final quote/highlight from the book, "You will carry pieces of your war with you forever, because it makes you who you are. A true war story never ends."

Get this book today and when this book does end you will be wishing it hadn't and might just want to read it again. You will carry pieces of Kevin's story and the Battle of Ramadi with you forever.

Praise For Inside VFX:

“Pierre Grage most certainly explains the issues that even a outsider can begin to understand. Grage shines a light on just why and how the movie business and the VFX “business” are so royally screwed up. This book, with its statistical analysis and commonsense approach, fully encapsulates the problems. It should be a primer for every student of VFX or animation, a must-read for anyone who works in the industry and, in fact, should be mandatory for every studio executive who might be “looking to put (yet another) VFX studio out of business.”
SCOTT ROSS —Co-Founder of Digital Domain and former CEO of Industrial Light & Magic, Sr VP Lucasfilm Ltd.

"Inside VFX is a must-read for anyone interested in the film and VFX business. The amount of information Pierre Grage uncovers is groundbreaking. This is the one and only book about the film and VFX industry you need to read.”
MICHAEL PANGRAZIO—Co-Founder of Matte World Digital & Art Director for Weta Digital Ltd.

“Over the past 30 years, digital visual effects has changed the art and science of making films. Inside VFX gives you the whole story and it’s brutally honest. A must-read – not only but especially if you are working in the film and VFX industry.”
KIM DAVIDSON —Co-Founder & CEO of Side Effects Software

“This book is an essential read for all artists, to understand how the VFX industry works so we can make a bigger impact and a bigger success within our careers. I thoroughly recommend Inside VFX as an essential resource for all VFX artists to both educate and adapt, to survive the ever changing VFX industry”
ALLAN McKAY —VFX Supervisor

Pierre Grage’s “Inside VFX” is an informative read looking at the visual effects industry from its earliest days up until today. If you want a look into the rich history and the many industry pressures found in today’s Hollywood VFX industry, this is the book for you.

Nobody knows anything!
By Andrew Graeme
Despite being 335 pages, I sat down and beasted through in one go!

It is an excellent read. As a fellow economist, I loved the economic treatment of the subject. Also, as someone who once worked in film and TV in Germany, I loved getting an idea of the bigger picture. The book deals with the economics of the movie industry from the point of view of a CGI artist.

At the end of the book, the author laments the existence of subsidies in places like the UK and Canada and the failing fortunes of visual effects (VFX) companies. He foresees a bleak future, but mixed with some careful optimism and I found that, if anything, his conclusions are too optimistic, if we look at what has happened to the music side of film making. It’s the same game, only further down the road to ruin, because the data wrangling is easier.

As recently as just ten years ago, we still needed big live rooms to record orchestras. Now sample packs and subsidised East European orchestras have replaced all that. That big orchestral film score? Two fiddles (for ‘feel’) and a sample pack!

I fear that this book will not be read by enough movie bosses, who, because they push and push and push on price, may end up killing the goose that has been laying golden eggs - CGI is in almost every film nowadays. Even rom-coms have scenery added and pylons and wind farms taken out with CGI as a matter of routine. You don't need a golden sunset anymore to film a love scene set against a golden sunset. And every action thriller, even the 'realistic' ones are shot-through with CGI in a way that few outsiders to the movie industry realise!

In short, CGI has moved from something that used to augment the film, to being at the very core of what we do! It is often at the creative heart of a movie. If we subject visual effects to a race to the bottom, that heart will stop beating.

Pierre Grage gives us a step-by-step insight into the broad economics of making a movie and how a film like 'Tomb Raider' with a budget of $95m, cost Paramount just $8.7m to make, or how many of the James Bond movies covered all their costs with product placement deals. We also discover that box-office receipts cover less than 25% of revenues and can often be little more than a cosmetic exercise!

The author takes us through the budgets of 30 films and compares their costs and profitability to similar films made at different times and also takes into account differing views of inflation and how inflation can help or hinder the bottom line.

If you are in the movie business and you want a fresh look at what is going on around you, or if you are an outsider, hoping to break in, or just an interested outsider, this book is a must-read!

But remember to take a long hard look at the music in a film. Ask the music editor how things are shaking down when it comes to getting a budget for a movie score! That race to the bottom, I fear, will be our future!

Or as screen writer William Goldman put it, when discussing how to judge if a film will be successful or not "Nobody knows anything!"

Great book on film visual effects industry
By Electric Bolt
This is a great book not just for those working in VFX, but for anyone interested in the film industry. Through the use of many examples and inside stories, the author shows how digital effects has had a profound and rapid change on the movie business. He effectively concludes that VFX is not as expensive as the studios want us to believe, but that VFX are often cheaper than the alternatives. But even with VFX increasing, the industry is in a terrible mess and likely to get worse before it gets better. Lots of fun to read and speculate on the future of VFX.
