Praise For Inside VFX:
“Pierre Grage most certainly explains the issues that even a outsider can begin to understand. Grage shines a light on just why and how the movie business and the VFX “business” are so royally screwed up. This book, with its statistical analysis and commonsense approach, fully encapsulates the problems. It should be a primer for every student of VFX or animation, a must-read for anyone who works in the industry and, in fact, should be mandatory for every studio executive who might be “looking to put (yet another) VFX studio out of business.”
SCOTT ROSS —Co-Founder of Digital Domain and former CEO of Industrial Light & Magic, Sr VP Lucasfilm Ltd.
"Inside VFX is a must-read for anyone interested in the film and VFX business. The amount of information Pierre Grage uncovers is groundbreaking. This is the one and only book about the film and VFX industry you need to read.”
MICHAEL PANGRAZIO—Co-Founder of Matte World Digital & Art Director for Weta Digital Ltd.
“Over the past 30 years, digital visual effects has changed the art and science of making films. Inside VFX gives you the whole story and it’s brutally honest. A must-read – not only but especially if you are working in the film and VFX industry.”
KIM DAVIDSON —Co-Founder & CEO of Side Effects Software
“This book is an essential read for all artists, to understand how the VFX industry works so we can make a bigger impact and a bigger success within our careers. I thoroughly recommend Inside VFX as an essential resource for all VFX artists to both educate and adapt, to survive the ever changing VFX industry”
ALLAN McKAY —VFX Supervisor

Nobody knows anything!
By Andrew Graeme
Despite being 335 pages, I sat down and beasted through in one go!
It is an excellent read. As a fellow economist, I loved the economic treatment of the subject. Also, as someone who once worked in film and TV in Germany, I loved getting an idea of the bigger picture. The book deals with the economics of the movie industry from the point of view of a CGI artist.
At the end of the book, the author laments the existence of subsidies in places like the UK and Canada and the failing fortunes of visual effects (VFX) companies. He foresees a bleak future, but mixed with some careful optimism and I found that, if anything, his conclusions are too optimistic, if we look at what has happened to the music side of film making. It’s the same game, only further down the road to ruin, because the data wrangling is easier.
As recently as just ten years ago, we still needed big live rooms to record orchestras. Now sample packs and subsidised East European orchestras have replaced all that. That big orchestral film score? Two fiddles (for ‘feel’) and a sample pack!
I fear that this book will not be read by enough movie bosses, who, because they push and push and push on price, may end up killing the goose that has been laying golden eggs - CGI is in almost every film nowadays. Even rom-coms have scenery added and pylons and wind farms taken out with CGI as a matter of routine. You don't need a golden sunset anymore to film a love scene set against a golden sunset. And every action thriller, even the 'realistic' ones are shot-through with CGI in a way that few outsiders to the movie industry realise!
In short, CGI has moved from something that used to augment the film, to being at the very core of what we do! It is often at the creative heart of a movie. If we subject visual effects to a race to the bottom, that heart will stop beating.
Pierre Grage gives us a step-by-step insight into the broad economics of making a movie and how a film like 'Tomb Raider' with a budget of $95m, cost Paramount just $8.7m to make, or how many of the James Bond movies covered all their costs with product placement deals. We also discover that box-office receipts cover less than 25% of revenues and can often be little more than a cosmetic exercise!
The author takes us through the budgets of 30 films and compares their costs and profitability to similar films made at different times and also takes into account differing views of inflation and how inflation can help or hinder the bottom line.
If you are in the movie business and you want a fresh look at what is going on around you, or if you are an outsider, hoping to break in, or just an interested outsider, this book is a must-read!
But remember to take a long hard look at the music in a film. Ask the music editor how things are shaking down when it comes to getting a budget for a movie score! That race to the bottom, I fear, will be our future!
Or as screen writer William Goldman put it, when discussing how to judge if a film will be successful or not "Nobody knows anything!"

Great book on film visual effects industry
By Electric Bolt
This is a great book not just for those working in VFX, but for anyone interested in the film industry. Through the use of many examples and inside stories, the author shows how digital effects has had a profound and rapid change on the movie business. He effectively concludes that VFX is not as expensive as the studios want us to believe, but that VFX are often cheaper than the alternatives. But even with VFX increasing, the industry is in a terrible mess and likely to get worse before it gets better. Lots of fun to read and speculate on the future of VFX.
