The Bhagavad Gita is often regarded as the Bible of India. With a gripping story and deeply compelling message, it is unquestionably one of the most popular sacred texts of Asia and, along with the Bible and the Qur'an, one of the most important holy scriptures in the world.

Part of an ancient Hindu epic poem, the dialogue of the Bhagavad Gita takes place on a battlefield, where a war for the possession of a North Indian kingdom is about to ensue between two noble families related by blood. The epic's hero, young Prince Arjuna, is torn between his duty as a warrior and his revulsion at the thought of his brothers and cousins killing each other over control of the realm. Frozen by this ethical dilemma, he debates the big questions of life and death with the supreme Hindu deity Krishna, cleverly disguised as his charioteer. By the end of the story, Eastern beliefs about mortality and reincarnation, the vision and practice of yoga, the Indian social order and its responsibilities, family loyalty, spiritual knowledge, and the loftiest pursuits of the human heart are explored in depth. Explaining the very purpose of life and existence, this classic has stood the test of twenty-three centuries. It is presented here in a thoroughly accurate, illuminating, and beautiful translation that is sure to become the standard for our day.

About the Author

Graham M. Schweig is the author and translator of Dance of Divine Love: The Råsa Lîlå of Krishna. After completing graduate work at the University of Chicago and Harvard University, he became associate professor of religious studies at Christopher Newport University and visiting associate professor of Sanskrit at the University of Virginia. Schweig was recently a Visiting Fellow of Hindu studies at Oxford University, and has been accepted as a Visiting Fellow at Cambridge University. He has traveled to India several times where for one year, under a Smithsonian Institution-funded grant, he researched ancient handwritten manuscripts. Since an early age, Schweig has practiced various forms of meditational and devotional yoga.

The Way of Devotion Helpfully Illuminated

Of the many translations of The Bhagavad Gita I have read this is certainly one of the best. Schweig's work with the text and in the commentaries (very inviting format and pleasant meter) is helping me to understand, for the first time, I think, the appeal of devotional (bhakti) yoga. In particular, Krishna's encouragement to be "absorbed in yoga" is continuing to intrigue me as I re-read this elegant translation.

While completing a degree in psychology at Harvard from 2004 to 2006, I squeezed in religion courses whenever I could, running into the Bhagavad Gita from various angles: In one course as a counterpart to the Koran, Torah, and Bible; in another as a treatise on yoga centered around the Universal Form in chapter eleven.

Prayer

What do you do when the doctor tells you that you have a terminal illness? Arthur Matthews decided to write a book, at the request of his friends. Arthur had spent a lifetime serving, first in the army during WWII and then as a missionary in Asia. At one time, he, his wife, and their toddler were confined to their quarters for two years, denied basic necessities, and cut off from the Chinese people they had come to serve. During those two years they endured two systematic attempts to starve them into submission. But no matter what each day held, that evening they would make it a point to kneel down with their little girl and sing hymns of praise to God. And they prayed. Seriously. Every day.
Oddly enough, Arthur was able to apply some of the lessons he learned in WWII to the spiritual realm - he came to see wrestling in prayer as the first and foremost weapon against the enemy's attacks. After he moved to the U.S., he taught people how to pray. When he was terminally ill, his friends asked him to write those lessons down in book form and that is how Born for Battle came into being.
A companion piece to this how-to book is the biography, Green Leaf in Drought by Isobel Kuhn. Isobel's book tells the story of Arthur and Wilda Matthews struggle to survive under the communists from 1951-1953. ARthur's book shares some of the spiritual principles that God taught them during that 2 and a half year crucible.

A Classic

A book to read and reread. I've read the paper back edition several times and given them away to be a blessing to others. I finally decided just to buy one for my Kindle, so I won't be tempted to give it away can read it, or portions of it, whenever I want. This is not a book about "saying your prayers"; it's about battling "the world, the flesh, and the devil" in order to reach heaven. The Matthews family were the last missionaries out of Communist China after spending several years under house arrest. It's a wonderful encouragement to live the Christian life in earnest, not just incidentally. I can't recommend it enough.

This book is a 31 chapter guidebook to effective prayer with personal stories of life of spiritual warfare on the mission field by a hero of faith - one of the founders of China Inland Mission. It is not only inspiring - but lays out a plan for praying effectively and fervently. It gives a perspective on prayer that explains the power of prayer. #1 Raw Food UnCookbook that I reach for daily

Literally my favorite Raw Food Cookbook and I own many. The recipes in this book are eye opening amazing. I have already made several of the dishes such as the Markus Pizza and the Sushi and the UnChicken Tacos and they were delicious. The breakfast items and snacks are amazing and the desserts such as the cannoli with cashew cream and pink passion pie blew my mind. Salads were interesting and delicious and my favorite is Markus's spicy Thai Cabbage Salad.The recipes in this book re-create favorite comfort foods into tasty and pretty darn quick dishes. A lot of other raw food books sometimes use elaborate ingredients or crazy preparation times but this book really is into making delicious and pretty simple meals. You will have to dehydrate some of the recipes but I like how they truly tried to make everything really simple and super tasty. Also there are very unique recipes. The sushi was not made from fish but they made aloe vera taste like fish! Truly amazing. The pizza crust was also different from other Raw food books I own and absolutely delicious. I think everyone should have this book in their raw collection, it truly is a culinary work of art and fun to even flip through. There are beautiful photos of EACH DISH.

A Raw Rookie like me can make amzing mouthwatering Recipes with this book!

Great book, well worth the investment. Beautiful pictures, super easy to follow instructions, highly creative ideas and very tasty recipes. I have owned the book for only a couple weeks and so far my favorites are the Garlic Naan which is amazing! The healthy mac N cheese, also amazing. I didn't like the real potato chips but my wife likes them for dipping. I would like to see more technique described on the recipes however most of the recipes have a website listed on the page and those link you to youtube videos that show you in detail how to make whatever it is. I noticed that none of the recipes use agave or palm sugar so I emailed the Markus on Facebook and he responded within 24 hours explaining why. Truly recipes and raw ideas for any beginner!

OVERPRICED AND COMPLICATED

Not so happy with this purchase. I bought this when it was a bit higher priced after being "sold it" by the marketing genius that is Markus Rothkrantz. I do think he does some good with his productions and free content - but in hind sight - I would just stick to his free content. All the recipes he offers for free on his website are in this book, and they are the ones that are easy to make. The rest is quite convoluted and probably fine for a well-off couple who have time to cook at home, but for everyday busy people, most of it looks like a chore to produce. Which is why I've hardly produced anything. I like the easy stuff from his websites! And the gorgeous little mini movie with the berries and avocado on dehydrated seed cracker (check it out I do love the love they put into their youtube stuff!). The hardcopy book might be a delight I am sure - but living in Australia it is not an option to purchase with high shipping charges and our exchange rate and the kindle version is severely lacking in formatting to get much enjoyment out of the beautiful photos I'm sure they have gone to a lot of effort to make. If I wasn't such a poor arse I'd probably be happy to have this book as a hardcopy on my shelf to dally in occasionally, but being a single mum I'm somewhat begrudged of the hard-earned dollars I paid for this underwhelming edition. I'm much happier with hardcopy books I've paid less for :)

About the Author

Captain Chesley B. Sullenberger III is a retired airline pilot, speaker, and consultant who has become a source of inspiration for many after his successful emergency water landing of a disabled airliner on the Hudson River. He graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy and holds two master's degrees and an honorary doctorate of letters from Purdue University. He has testified before Congress about aviation safety and the state of the airline piloting profession. He serves as the CBS News aviation and safety expert, is the founder of Safety Reliability Methods, Inc., a management, safety, and performance consulting company, and was named one of Time's 100 Most Influential People. He lives with his family in Danville, California.

Jeffrey Zaslow is a Wall Street Journal columnist, and, with Randy Pausch, coauthor of The Last Lecture, and the author of The Girls from Ames. Zaslow lives in Michigan, with his family.

An American Story

If you are looking for a long narrative of Chesley "Sully" Sulllenberger's amazing piloting of US Airways Flight 1549 on January 15, 2009, then you will be disappointed, so don't buy this book. On the other hand, if you want to know just what brings a man like Sully Sullenberger to exceptional (maybe even heroic) performance, then read on. The answer is developed over 300 pages of Sullenberger telling the reader the story of his life--from a small community in Texas through the rigors of the Air Force Academy through service to his country as an Air Force fighter pilot and on to his commercial flying career. Were it not for the remarkable challenge of "The Miracle on the Hudson," chances are that we'd never have heard of Sully Sullenberger. Indeed, he estimated that he has flown perhaps a million people--and until January 15 virtually none of whom would recognize him a week after their flight--and that's the way he would want it to be. Yet that doesn't mean the strength and character of the man weren't already there. If there's one thing to derive from this interesting book, that's it. His remarkable qualities were already developed through his life experiences.

As you read this book, you realize that Sullenberger was absolutely prepared to be a pilot. It started back when he learned to fly (at age 16), it continued during his years at the Air Force Academy and in the Air Force, and it kept growing through his commercial pilot career. For example, he made a point of studying aircraft accidents, trying to put himself in the seats of those who had to make split-second decisions. I was surprised to read that he studied an ocean ditching (a flight from Hawaii to San Francisco) that had remarkable similarities to Sullenberger's ditching in the Hudson: that pilot walked up and down the plane, twice, to make sure everyone had left, and the plane stayed afloat for 21 minutes. Sullenberger knew what to do on January 15, 2009, because he had thoroughly thought through the process long before he was called to land in the Hudson.

There is a fair amount of personal story in Highest Duty--the story of his parents, wife and adopted daughters; the sad state of the commercial airline business; his struggling finances and his commitment to helping others. The reader can see that Sullenberger is no Superman, just another one of a long list of committed people who have resolved to be prepared and to do the right thing--whether or not they ever become famous. There are also some fighter pilot stories that you'd expect (and appreciate). You learn that one thing about being a fighter pilot is that one understands how important skill and clear thinking are, but one also realizes that some things aren't necessarily left in your own hands.

In short, this book is an easy to read and enjoyable experience. It is insightful, too. You'll probably read it in just a few sittings, and you will likely develop the feeling that there are many American heroes out there. We just don't know all their names.

"Daily Devotion to Duty"

I think that Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger's book reads well. Very well, indeed. Were it solely about the five minute flight over New York City in January, 2009, it would have a lot of padding in its 300+ pages - but fortunately, and obviously (to those who know the author), it's not just about the world-famous events of the amazing ditching on the Hudson River - it goes far, far beyond that.

Highest Duty is a portrait of an American life. Sully takes us on a tour encompassing his small-town upbringing, discussing his parents' instillation of strong, consistent values, discussing his early love affair with aviation, telling personal and touching stories of his family and his remarkable wife and partner Lorrie, covering his life-long focus on improving safety and reliability in aviation, and reviewing his observations about our nation's commercial aviation industry.

While one might reasonably wonder whether a formerly anonymous commercial pilot would have a compelling story to tell - a story that goes beyond the brief flight over the Hudson River - the engaging pages of Highest Duty make it clear that Sully's story is engaging, gripping, and filled with lessons for us all.

Poignant & stunning!

Found myself captivated by the book that Capt. Sully Sullenberger wrote in the aftermath of sailing on the Hudson with an Airbus A320. Agree with the couple of other reviewers that this is about much more than just the LGA incident. This book describes the ethos of a very modest, private and self effacing pilot and gives us a window into a career and a calling that saved the lives of some 150 odd people. I found the content on relationships and parenting very readable and poignant. What I found saddening is the dismantling of America that I see in all walks of life extends to even the airline industry. I probably realized it was happening but to have it spelled out by Sully .....the outsourcing of even the airlines: maintenance, machining and the incredibly low wages accorded pilots is STUNNING. I found the book well written and lucid!! On a somewhat separate note I find it beyond belief that we all prop up systems that reward Wall Street and their sinecures while driving the likes of Sully into penury!
