Prayer

What do you do when the doctor tells you that you have a terminal illness? Arthur Matthews decided to write a book, at the request of his friends. Arthur had spent a lifetime serving, first in the army during WWII and then as a missionary in Asia. At one time, he, his wife, and their toddler were confined to their quarters for two years, denied basic necessities, and cut off from the Chinese people they had come to serve. During those two years they endured two systematic attempts to starve them into submission. But no matter what each day held, that evening they would make it a point to kneel down with their little girl and sing hymns of praise to God. And they prayed. Seriously. Every day.
Oddly enough, Arthur was able to apply some of the lessons he learned in WWII to the spiritual realm - he came to see wrestling in prayer as the first and foremost weapon against the enemy's attacks. After he moved to the U.S., he taught people how to pray. When he was terminally ill, his friends asked him to write those lessons down in book form and that is how Born for Battle came into being.
A companion piece to this how-to book is the biography, Green Leaf in Drought by Isobel Kuhn. Isobel's book tells the story of Arthur and Wilda Matthews struggle to survive under the communists from 1951-1953. ARthur's book shares some of the spiritual principles that God taught them during that 2 and a half year crucible.

A Classic

A book to read and reread. I've read the paper back edition several times and given them away to be a blessing to others. I finally decided just to buy one for my Kindle, so I won't be tempted to give it away can read it, or portions of it, whenever I want. This is not a book about "saying your prayers"; it's about battling "the world, the flesh, and the devil" in order to reach heaven. The Matthews family were the last missionaries out of Communist China after spending several years under house arrest. It's a wonderful encouragement to live the Christian life in earnest, not just incidentally. I can't recommend it enough.

Best book on prayer I have ever read!

This book is a 31 chapter guidebook to effective prayer with personal stories of life of spiritual warfare on the mission field by a hero of faith - one of the founders of China Inland Mission. It is not only inspiring - but lays out a plan for praying effectively and fervently. It gives a perspective on prayer that explains the power of prayer.
