He emerged from an abusive childhood an angry young man on a straight path to the penitentiary. By his early 20s, Sample was serving a 30-year prison sentence at Retrieve, a plantation-style prison known as "the burnin' hell." After a profound spiritual awakening, Sample's future changed dramatically.
In 1972, he was released after serving 17 years and soon received a full pardon and restoration of all civil rights. Sample went on to become the first ex-convict in Texas to work out of the Governor's office and to serve on the staff of the State Bar of Texas. In recognition for his work in the field of corrections and rehabilitation of ex-offenders, he received numerous high-profile humanitarian awards. Review
Acclaimed filmmaker Sean Hepburn Ferrer presents the life story of former convict turned do-gooder Albert Race Sample in the 2003 biographical documentary Racehoss. Sharing the name of Sample s enormously popular book, Racehoss begins as Sample relates to an audience his frightening and troubled upbringing, which started in the neglectful and abusive care of his prostitute mother, Big Emma. As an passive participant in his mother s dangerous lifestyle, Sample quickly developed into a social deviant in his own right, with one of his early formative experiences including his assault and stabbing of one his elementary school teachers. Shortly thereafter, Sample dropped out of school and was abandoned by age 12, leaving the young man homeless and a frequent traveler of the nation s railway system via boxcar. After a brief, yet tumultuous, stint in the army, Sample was sentenced to a 30-year prison term for an unidentified violent crime. After serving 17 years, he was paroled and found work in the Texas state prison system, and eventually turned his life around to become a high ranking official within the Texas Criminal Division. Racehoss was included in the program for the 2003 New York Independent Film and Video Festival. --All Movie Guide
These stories are worthy of Twain, Faulkner and Lardner. --Chicago Tribune
One of the most remarkable stories I've come across, perhaps the most remarkable is the story of Albert Race Sample, known as Racehoss. --Studs Terkel, Pulitzer Prize Winning Author
Review
"POWERFUL. ... As remarkable as Richard Wright's autobiography 'Black Boy.' Brilliantly set down in street language ... the stories vivify the personalities who filled Sample's life and dominate his memory. These stories are worthy of Twain, Faulkner, and Lardner."
The Chicago Tribune
"A TIMELESS CLASSIC. If you accept RACEHOSS in the right spirit, it will blow your mind."
The San Antonio Express-News
"Of the most remarkable stories I've come across, perhaps the most remarkable is the story of Albert Race Sample, known as Racehoss. This book is more than a searing indictment of the Southern prison system. It is an outcast's eloquent testament to life."
Studs Terkel
Pulitzer Prize Winning Author
"Sample's book makes hell vivid. There are many unforgettable moments in his account of his prison years. ... But the book also is warmly funny. The prisoners are brought to life through Sample's accurate ear for how people talk, and it's clear that humor is one of the means for surviving in hell."
The Dallas Morning News
From the Author
I WAS HEADED TO HELL ON THE DAY I WAS BORN. BY THE TIME I STOOD SHACKLED AT THE BACKGATE OF THE TEXAS PRISON KNOWN AS "THE BURNIN HELL," I WAS READY. I DIDN'T CARE ABOUT NOTHING OR NOBODY. HELL WAS WHERE I BELONGED. I CAME FACE TO FACE WITH THE DEVIL. HE BLINKED AND I KEPT ON STEPPING.

a light in the darkest dwelling of the soul...
By FTATA23@aol.com
I am looking for this book which is now out of print I believe. Ordinarily I might overlook this subject matter... but, I was listening to NPR's Diane Rehm 25th anniversary show, in which she played various excerpts of past programs. Diane prefaced... "and the most moving interview for me was with Albert Race Samples" and then I heard this smallish quivering voice with a light Texas accent talking about his time in "the hole" in prison, about how one day (or night?) in the absolute blackness around him, a loneliness and desperation of the soul came upon him... he called out to God and was answered with a glimmer of light right in front of him... from then, he knew he was not alone. I was moved, as Rehm had been... and determined to try to find his book. I could only wish it would be available on CD and read by Mr. Samples himself.

Stephen King MUST have read this book!
By Paul D. Myers
In the mid 1980's I tuned into a repeat program on the local NPR affiliate in Washington D.C. Diane Rehm was the host of a repeat broadcast of an interview with the author. It was such an absolutely compelling interview with the man, now obviously (at that time) an elderly gentleman--that I had to go out right away and purchase the book. It was and still remains a book that embodies everything "Classic" literature is. King must have read this before writing "Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption"--and as good a short story and subsequent movie as it was--Race Hoss:Big Emma's Boy is the ultimate real deal. Having heard the interview with the author, I am at a distinct advantage to analyze both the man and his writing. There are simply no superlatives to describe either. God Bless Albert Race Sample--thank you for a book that hopefully be filmed just as it is written. If approached honestly, it would be the finest portrayal of prison life as well as life as a young black man in the Deep South to date.
