A superb translation
By Abu Sajid
After being thoroughly disappointed with the poor translation quality of Sahih Bukhari by a major publisher, I had remained puzzled as to why the Islamic world has not yet produced a world-class and accurate translation of the most important book after the Qur'an.
Although I have known about this translation by Muhammad Asad for years, it is only now that I was able to obtain a copy after it was reprinted recently, being pleasantly surprised of discovering a gem. His superb and masterful translation - as literal as possible while managing to retain the proper meanings, as only Asad can do - came as soothing that earlier pain to some extent. This superb and lucid translation is what one could expect from Asad, a master of both the English and the Arabic languages, being well-acquainted with the nuances of the both as well as the customs of the Arabs among whom he lived for years, and one of the most brilliant Muslim minds that the 20th century produced. He also provided ample footnotes elucidating terms, personalities, and providing historical contexts where necessary, which helps in brining the ancient text come alive to the readers. The text retains the full isnad, which is considered a critical component of each hadith, separating it from the main body with slightly smaller fonts, thus creating a clear distinction and making the text more readable. Both the original Arabic and the English translation are presented side by side, and the interjecting internal phrases are also distinguished with different font styles or placements. On top of the masterful translation quality, all these add further value to the work, and I will not be surprised if the unique style and formatting was implemented under the direction of the late author himself, may Allah (swt) have Mercy on his soul and generously reward him for his invaluable contributions to Islamic thought. All these, despite a few issues, make this work deserving of best ratings.
Among the few shortcomings, one wished that the Arabic font used was a better and more clear one and provided the vowel marks, making it easier for non-Arabs to read. On Asad’s attempt to re-arrange Bukhari in chronological form - I do not have much to complain about. In fact, a work like this, were he able to complete it, would have been invaluable in understanding the development of Islam and the early community of believers. But with the numbers changed, it is harder to corroborate a given hadith with the one in the original Bukhari. One hoped that he had retained the original numbers or at least provided a way to cross-reference the original hadith. Finally, as is the case with the "Message of the Qur'an", Asad’s translation and commentary on the Qur'an, this work reflects, to a lesser extent, the author’s inclination towards rationalization, perhaps a bit more than what the orthodox understandings would permit. If one can set aside those few areas where he (or she) may differ with Asad, as do this reviewer, and able to objectively judge a work, then he will truly appreciate the value of this unmatched and unique gift of Muhammad Asad to Islamic literature.
Sadly, this is only the first volume, or a partial translation, perhaps about 15%, of the complete text of Bukhari. Asad had planned to publish the subsequent volumes and had in fact completed three-quarters of translating and annotating the complete Bukhari when an unfortunate event befell - the infamous riot in the aftermath of the Indo-Pak independence. The rioters attacked Asad’s home in Punjab, looting and ransacking everything including his personal library and the manuscripts of this work, throwing them in the river. “With my own eyes,” recalled Asad, “I saw a few scattered leaves of those manuscripts floating down the river Ravi in the midst of torn Arabic books - the remnants of my library - and all manner of debris; and with those poor, floating pieces of paper vanished beyond recall more than ten years of intensive labour.”
Can the Muslim world take the challenge and pick up from where Asad left off? When will the Islamic world, one that is gifted with both intellectuals and resources, put together a team of experts with mastery in both English and Arabic, who will deliver to the word - belated but never too late - a translation of Bukhari that is genuinely accurate and properly annotated, matching or surpassing the quality of Asad’s?
