Essential For Anyone Interested In Astrology

Allow me to preface this review by saying you do not need to be a practitioner of jyotish to LOVE this book. As unbelievable as that sounds for a book about a practice so dauntingly complex, I remain confident that this book will hook anyone even slightly interested in astrology within the first few pages. Let me also say that the information presented within this book is NOT limited to sidereal astrology at ALL. I would recommend this book to any practitioner of Western astrology and I'm positive that practitioners and non practitioners alike will walk away from this book with incredible revelations. If you have any interest in the art of astrology, this book is for you.

I have been a student of Jyotish for several years. The subject has not been heavily written about in the West and I have found much of the information available to be misleading or just totally incorrect. Many translations of Indian books aren't much better. The valuable books I've read about jyotish mostly read like text books, which is fine, but I can't say that I really "enjoyed" reading them. "Special Topics in Vedic Astrology" is truly an exception.

This tiny book is positively brimming with the gems I've searched through eight hundred page tomes for(often fruitlessly). Every single page contained information that felt effortlessly comprehensible, totally intriguing, and divinely inspired. Although I'm sure this book was meant as a treatise on some aspects of vedic astrology, I found that description to be very bland in describing my experience while reading the book, as this is the work of someone who is both a storyteller and a pundit.

Undoubtably the muse of astrology lives within this book. I cannot say that about any other book I have ever encountered. I believe I will be rediscovering its teachings long after the next installment is available. Thank you very much to those who made it available.

In this series of vignettes on special topics in Vedic Astrology, the author takes us on a delightful tour of the common and less than-common attractions of this vedic art & science. Like a buffet of fit-in-your hand delectables from around the world, it allows us to sample the tasty morsels that make Jyotisha such a rich and complex tradition. For examples, sections on "Yogas of Spiritual Intensity" or combinations for "Skill and Dexterity in Jyotisha" introduce topics unique to Vedic Astrology- and ones that are not taught in your 'by-the-numbers' textbooks. It takes years of study with masters in the craft to learn the recipes that the author has freely shared with us. Indispensable for students and aficionados of Jyotisha, along with Light on Life by Hart de Fouw.

Just days after the attack on the Federation Capitol and the death of thousands of senators, Tibby accepts the biggest challenge of his life by becoming a Fleet Admiral for Federation. Tibby is still at the capitol when he contacts his space yacht, the NEW ORLEANS, which is just finishing up repairs at Nibaria and asks them to fly ahead to Plosaxen and use its Reverse magnetic Force Field shields to deflect shots by the HAPRIN directed at the planet. Meanwhile, Tibby is officially commissioned into the Federation Space Force as a Fleet Admiral by the Senate. He and Kalana use Tibby’s Mirage Fighter, the ALI to join up with the NEW ORLEANS at Plosaxen. Before they arrive, the Brotherhood, on the HAPRIN, is joined by their ally a Tottalax warship. When Tibby and Kalana arrive, the cloaked NEW ORLEANS is taking heavy fire acting as an invisible shield. Tibby and Kalana are forced to remain cloaked themselves while they wait for the battle to wane so they can board the NEW ORLEANS, however, before they can do so the Tottalax unleashes their sleep weapon in an attempt to disable the NEW ORLEANS crew. Tibby and Kalana are rendered unconscious aboard the ALI as ship continues on its flight path after colliding with the Tottalax. Tibby awakens to alarms going off and the ALI is about to crash into a planet. He discovers his ship has apparently been damaged by an impact with the HAPRIN after he and Kalana lost consciousness. Tibby is barely able to make an emergency landing on the remote desert planet aptly named Desolation when Kalana awakens and announces she is going into labor. Tibby must help Kalana deliver the twins; the ALI is unable to take off or fly again, and nearest help is two light-years away Tibby activates an emergency signal for assistance and rescue, knowing it may be years, if ever, that it will be detected and help arrives.
Tibby has no way of knowing what is happening with the war against the Brotherhood. He knows he needs to get back and take command of the 1st fleet but for now he must focus on caring for Kalana and the twins in a hostile environment, with strange nocturnal creatures on a planet that seems dead by day but comes to life after the sun sets. As time progresses, Tibby must deal with the nagging thought of who will hear his emergency message and arrive first, his friends to rescue him, or the Brotherhood that seeks to kill him.

I have been an avid reader of science fiction for over 50 years and in all that time, I have only seen a hand full of science fiction books that incorporate families in the story. In the Solbidyum Wars Saga, starting with book 5, I try a new approach by bringing children into the saga as Tibby and Kalana have twins.  Throughout this book and the rest of the saga, you will get to read about these children growing as seen through the eyes of their father.  Like most fathers, especially those in the military, getting to spend time with one's children is never often enough, but yet bonds are developed, and interactions take place.  I am hoping that by bringing these children into the story it will add an element that will make the stories more realistic, even though they are fiction. I am hoping you will find this addition to the stories interesting and fun, and for those readers who are parents, I hope you can find elements that you can relate to with your own memories of raising your children.  For the rest of you, be assured there still will be plenty of action and intrigue as the war continues to grow, and Tibby leads the battle against the evil Brotherhood.

About the Author
Dale Musser was born in 1944 in a small rural community of Pennsylvania.  From 1967 until 2012 he was employed as a structural and piping designer in the industries of marine and offshore resources, cogeneration power and hard rock mining.  His work at three shipyards and assignments with several engineering and naval architectural firms during his careers in Virginia, Texas, and Maine, took him to such places as London, U.K., Abu Dhabi, U.A.E., Scotland and Mexico.  During this time, he was responsible for the design of reactor compartments for nuclear aircraft carriers and submarines for the U.S. Navy and the structural designs of numerous offshore semi-submersible oil rigs, tanker ships, supply boats, and other vessels and equipment used in the offshore industry.  After the death of his wife in 1999, Mr. Musser changed careers and went to work in Arizona and Utah in the hard rock mining industry.  He retired in the Fall of 2012 and currently resides in Mesa, Arizona.
Dale enjoys rock hunting and lapidary work, gourmet cooking, writing, poetry, art, music, religions and philosophy in small doses, astronomy and the sciences in general, hiking, camping, the outdoors and the gifts that nature provides.  Mr. Musser is a member of Mensa and remains an avid reader, having lost count of all the books he has read after 3,000.
The greatest joy in his life is his daughter, Heather.  Affectionately they call each other "BUBBY."

buckle up and enjoy the ride

Dale-Dale-Dale - brilliantly written, technically-dramatically-comically - I am upset though, as I couldn't put the book down and now have to wait for book 6. All the while, hoping there will be 60 books - the story line you've created is one like I've never experienced before. the depth of characters is phenomenal and your insight to their technology blows me away, this progression seems believable and real. It's also easy to connect with every character, their personalities and emotions bring your books to life. now, I must tell you, I've changed my mind. I've hoped since book one, that your vision makes it to the big screen... A two hour movie, even with sequels will do your books no justice. I'm hoping that one day, everyone will enjoy your stories on the sci-fi channel in a weekly series, that would last several seasons. I eagerly await book 6. Again, great job and thank you for taking my mind on a trip through the Galaxy and beyond.

The sewing machine, America's Great Civilizer, represents the most important invention of the nineteenth century. No other discovery in past or modern times has so affected the world's working class. No other invention has so changed the global workplace or done more to enhance the quality of life all over the planet. No invention, no modern electronic computer or other home appliance has achieved as many sales or as much global recognition as the Singer Sewing Machine.

The Singer Sewing Machine Company's 5,000 branch offices and sewing centers reached into 190 of the world's political entities. At one time, its weekly paychecks went out to 87,000 employees. To accommodate its global customer base, the company translated its sewing machine instruction and repair manuals into at least 54 languages. In many of today's third world languages, the word singer supplants both the verb for sewing and the noun in the defining compound expression, sewing machine, which survives as a singer machine. The global ubiquity of Singer sewing machines, its company factories, and its repair and instruction centers began evolving before the US Civil War. Singer families, like generational military families, also date from these years. For example, Singer's German-managed facilities employed three and four generations of workers from the same family. The company became so ingrained in German culture that World War II German aviators avoided bombing Singer's European manufacturing facilities believing them German-owned. When hostilities ended, relatively intact Singer facilities resumed full operations within days.

On the grounds of extensive research, Bissell makes the case that the Singer Sewing Machine Company was a leader in the industrialization leading to rising standards of living for the masses of average persons, beginning in the U. S. in the decades before the Civil War and continuing well into the 20th century. The Company was a leader not only in developing the sewing machine providing well-made, mass-produced clothing, but also in creating a large labor force, implementing progressive employee and business practices, and standing as a model for other companies formed in the course of industrialization. Indeed, the Singer Sewing Machine Company was so successful and so respected over a wide area of the globe that in the language of many Third World countries, the word singer is used for the noun sewing-machine and the verb to sew.
Bissell follows the history of the Company mostly by profiles of its succession of presidents focusing in their perspectives and practices as they faced different economic and social circumstances in the long history of the Company. Singer1s reputation and success suffered a severe setback in 1987 after a hostile takeover by Paul Bilzerian, who was later indicted on tax and securities violations. Only in the past five years or so has Singer been able to recover from this and regain something of its former prominent position. For following the Singer Sewing Machine Company from its founding until today, Bissell1s history of this major American Company is the definitive book on this subject.

Has a number of awkward grammatical constructions and here and there, a sentence that doesn't have all its parts. I'd suspect it was Bissell's first book but , like I said, worth effort. I'd read another of his books..

History of the Singer Company

The First Conglomerate is a must-read for a student of business management, as it gives details of the rise and near fall of the Singer Company, and what it might have become with a little more foresight in the late twentieth century. I read it, however, not so much for the history of the company, but in hopes of reading descriptions of the evolution of their main product, the Singer sewing machine. Information on the actual product, and other products, however, is scarce, and can be more easily obtained by visiting sewing machine enthusiast websites.

I was also disappointed with the poor quality of the e-book itself, which contains far too many typos--indicating that it was OCR scanned and not proof read diligently (spell-checkers don't count as actual proofing!) That being said, I spent a lot of time reading, even into the late hours of the night, and was very fascinated with how this company progressed over the past century and a half.

Rosen captures universal quest for understanding in face of sorrow

Jonathan Rosen derives the title and theme of his inspiring novel from the Book of Psalms. It is the promise of hope after despair that animates his elegant "Joy Comes in the Morning." Each of Rosen's characters is suffused with pain: the pain of Holocaust memories, the pain of thwarted dreams, the pain of an unfulfilled life. Each major character wrestles with loss of faith and a dwindling belief in life's possibilities. And, true to the counsel offered in Psalm 30, each struggles to realize that however daunting and long a night's pain can be, a new day dawns with promise.

"Joy Comes in the Morning" adheres to a conventional plot and does not break any new ground stylistically. Its towering strength is how its characters grapple with the timeless problems of existential anguish, search for meaning and rediscovery of purpose. Rosen confidently imbues the three crucial characters of his novel with a universality that binds them to us. Henry Friedman, victimized by a debilitating and humiliating stroke, assiduously plans his own suicide. His skeptical son, Lev, lacks focus and confidence in the wake of a failed relationship and the mental breakdown of his best friend. Both men find comfort in rabbi Deborah Green, whose strength and compassion belie her own crumbling faith.

The interplay between Henry, Lev and Deborah becomes the leaven through which Rosen probes questions of faith, family and love. Each character's humanity includes faults, and Rosen's willingness to permit the three to struggle, without roadmaps or guarantees, is one of the best aspects of his writing. Before his abortive attempt to end his life, Henry, whose wife describes him as a "wounded, loving, mercurial man," writes a final letter to his son. In this deeply moving letter, Henry enjoins his son to "submit" to "things larger than ourselves." These "obligations sustain us," Henry writes, but he is unclear as to what these duties are. Lev, "shy, empathic and self-conscious," sets out to discover what his father's cryptic command entails.

Lev's quest takes him to Deborah, whom he meets as she comforts the comatose Henry in a hospital room. Both Lev and Deborah are recovering from failed relationships; each slowly, irreversibly is beginning to redefine the place of religion and spirituality in their respective lives. It is no accident that they are drawn to each other, despite their glaring surface differences. As a rabbi, Deborah is a risk-taker; her earthy sensuality symbolizes her humanity just as her emotionally-liberating, free-flowing tears counterbalance her astonishing capacity for rational study and intellectual rigor. Ironically, doubts and uncertainties provide the mortar for a lasting relationship between the two.

Although Jonathan Rosen's novel features Jewish characters, it is universally appealing. "Joy Comes in the Morning" captures the fears many of us experience in times of crisis and the terror we may feel when traditional faith-based solutions disappear. It is existential loneliness, the realization that we must come up with our own solutions to bind up emotional wounds, that drives the novel. With sensitivity, humor and faith, Rosen offers us a compelling answer.

Another "charming" book for high school readers

I bought this book after reading a very positive review in the New York Times, especially since I thought a lot of Rosen's book, The Talmud and the Internet. What I got was a book appropriate for a "sensitive" 10th grade Jewish girl or a Jewish grandmother. (By the way, I am Jewish.) Given the significant number of well-written books, it is somewhat distressing that a clunky book like this is treated as adult literature. There is an audience for this book, just as there was an audience for Barry Manilow records. If Barry's singing touched you, you likely will enjoy this book.

"Weeping May Endure For A Night..." Psalm 30

The first thing that the reader notes is the book is impossible to put down. Mr. Rosen builds a special rapport with the reader that makes his story compelling. The reader is left each time the book is put down, with the irresistible urge to find out what will happen next.

Rosen tells a wonderful and realistic tale of a Reform Woman Rabbi in Manhattan. The book describes her relationship to the Jewish faith, from a Reform Perspective. This perspective is a difficult one, as the concept of Reform Judaism has at its core, the same beliefs as all Judaism, but tempered by a modern interpretation of the scriptures that lends itself more easily to the combination of civil and religious life in the vast Materialistic and Capitalistic and Cacophonous reality of modern society.

Yet Deborah, the lady Rabbi who is the protagonist of Rosen's story, does not in any way lack spiritualism or connection to her faith. She has a great and mighty dedication to her beliefs. And she does her utmost to convey that feeling to her congregants and to all that she may meet. Some would say, that she made some very rash decisions and took some very unorthodox actions within Rosen's story. But this is for the reader to evaluate in the privacy of the mind.

One thing is clearly true. The book shows the stark contrast and the interesting co-existence of human Joy and human Sadness, as they live within us, all the time, yet most of the time, they balance within us to make us a whole person. When that balance is no longer within our control, we lose our ability to moderate that and we also lose our ability to operate in regular day to day society.

Rosen is acutely wonderful at illustrating this dichotomy in his book. For all who have struggled with the concepts of the different forms of Judaism, this book offers a new perspective; a perspective that puts the power of decision and free choice back into the individual's mind and heart, and not into anyone else's.

The book is highly recommended for all with any interest whatsoever in theology and the concept of God. Regardless of one's religion, one can related to the stark, yet gentle realism of Rosen's work.

It is the first translation of the work into a European language and provides unique access to this formative period in Chinese History. Because Yang Hsiung's interpretations drew upon a variety of pre-Han sources and then dominated Confucian learning until the Twelfth century, this text is also a valuable resource on early Chinese history, philosophy, and culture beyond the Han period.

The T'ai hsuan is also one of the world's great philosophic poems comparable in scale and grandeur to Lucretius' De rerum naturum. Nathan Sivan has written that this is one of the titles on the short list of Chinese books every cultivated person should read.

Han thinkers saw in this text a compelling restatement of Confucian doctrine that addressed the major objections posed by rival schools including Mohism, Taoism, Legalism and Yin-Yang Five Phase Theory. Since this Han amalgam formed the basis for the state ideology of China from 134 B.C. to 1911, an ideology that in turn provided the intellectual foundations for the Japanese and Korean States, the importance of this book can hardly be overestimated.

On Getting Oracular

It is always fascinating to see these old texts coming back to light. Nylan deserves much credit for his interesting work on the text. Even so, several misunderstandings seem to accompany the re-emergence of this text. One of the editorial reviews claims that Nylan's text translation (for the Suny series) was the first to appear in a European language. That is incorrect,Derek Walters version('The Alternative I Ching,' 1986) was already available, accompanied by similarly bold claims. Like Walters, Nylan claims special advantages for the 'tri-partite' division of the Tai Hsuan Ching. Walters had argued that the Tai Hsuan Ching accorded a more complete, active role to 'man' - as against the Yi-Ching's allegedly 'fixed' dualistic system.All of this shows a poor grasp of what the Yi Ching (and Tai Hsuan Ching) actually teach.The 'Tso chuan' section of the Yi-Ching stresses that 'Heaven, Earth and Man' are what comprise the Tao. Every trigram (and hexagram) in the Yi Ching reflects this threefold unity ('the 'three powers' or 'san-tsai') - and the Yi-Ching makes this clear on every count. Human 'agency' is therefore vital to the Yi-Ching. It was not a 'new' idea with the Tai Hsuan Ching. The antiquity of this intuition is evident in the formation of the Chinese script, the old Ku-wen forms, giving the character for 'king' or 'kingship' as a representation of the 'san-tsai' or 'three powers' - linked by a vertical stroke, anciently, the kingly-priest in whom the 'san-tsai' were united or focused. It is a basically a 'trigram' - crossed by a vertical line. Like Walters, Nylan makes some rather bold claims for the Tai Hsuan Ching. But trying to place it in 'competition' against the Yi-Ching - is naive. The Tai Hsuan Ching, along with another text called the 'Lien Shan' (Mountains Standing Together' - has been included in the 'Imperial Oracle' of China. Nevertheless, Chinese history and culture tells its own story. The sexagenary cycles and yin-yang system connected with the Yi-Ching have governed everything of relevance - the cosmic calendar, medicine/healing arts/Taoist yoga, feng-shui, the martial arts, military strategy (Sun-tzu's ideas were based on it) against which, the role and influence of the Tai Hsuan Ching or Lien shan, have remained obscure, shadowy and marginal.

This classic has continually amazed the reviewer with its high incidence of "reality".One can only conclude that this is a reference oracle of the highest order and its time has come in the post-millenium world.It is indeed a reincarnation.It has applications as a daily calendar,intense wisdom to be considered at any time, and a living oracle.The tripartate philosophy supercedes the I Ching in many ways.This is well worth a look for any divinatory scholar.Highly recommended.

She's like a poker player who won't reveal her hand because she's bluffing.

I would have thought with the size of this book there would have been at least some documentation on why she asserts the Jen flux as being the twice broken line but there is none. And yet her rabid followers froth about how superior this work is to the Walters version who offers much more useful information on the math and structure. Watch his Youtube videos to get an idea of how thoroughly pedantic Derek Walters is about the roots of Chinese thinking in metaphysics and you will understand why you NEED the earlier version to really grok the THC. Despite his cautious reasoning Derek Walters book has beauty and poetry. This one reads like a user manual for a toaster or something. Throughout the entire painfully dry and unpoetic translation not a single word to support the TERRIFYING paradigm shifting sentence that claims Jen is represented by a twice broken line. Chinese mathematics is not as simple as 1-2-3 and by leaving out any explanation for this or just admitting she has no idea, she makes her entire book highly suspect to those of us in the know about the reality of the debate on this topic.

Henry Kellerman has held faculty and clinical positions at several universities and hospitals spanning a fifty year career as clinical psychologist and psychoanalyst. Dr. Kellerman is in private practice in New York City. He is the former editor of the Columbia University Press series, Personality, Psychopathology, and Psychotherapy: Theoretical and Clinical Perspectives.

The multicultural region of Central Eurasia is living through its early post-independence years and as such serves as an ideal case to study and analyse theories of identity and foreign policy in a non-European context. Looking to re-introduce identity as a multidimensional factor informing state behaviour, this book analyses the experiences of the different Central Eurasian states in their post-independence pursuits.

The book is structured into two broadly defined sections, with the first half examining the different ways in which the combination of domestic, regional, international and trans-national forces worked to advance one national identity over the others in the states that comprise the region of post-Soviet Central Eurasia. In the second half, chapters analyse the many ways in which identity, once shaped, affected foreign policy behaviours of the regional states, as well as the overall security dynamics in the region. The book also looks at the ways in which identity, by doing so, enjoys an intricate, mutually constitutive relationship with the strategic context in which it bears its effects on the state and the region. Finally, given the special role Russia has historically played in defining the evolutionary trajectory of the regional states, the book discusses the ways in which Russia itself and its post-cold war policies towards its former colonies have been conditioned by factors associated with Russia’s evolving post-Soviet identity.

Placing the region firmly within existing theories of identity and state practices, the book will be of interest to students and scholars of Central Asian Politics, Security Studies, Foreign Policy and International Relations.
