Memoir of Africa
By James Henderson
Out of Africa is Karen Blixen's memoir about her years in Africa, writing as Isak Dinesen. She recounts the world of Africa, specifically Kenya. It is, like the England of her friend Denys Finch-Hatton, "a world that no longer existed" even then and certainly as she left it. The memoir is a slow read, yet a book with prose in which you can luxuriate, or languish perhaps as it seems to mirror the mammoth African landscape. Reading like a pastoral novel, the narrator interested me with her myriad experiences. It presents people, cultures, landscape, and wildlife through her eyes, sometimes noble, sometimes paternal. The culture of the various tribes and religions with whom she had contact on her coffee farm became almost real, so that as I read certain moments became funny or sad or wistful. The reader comes to view animals differently, the fecundity of life struck me particularly. The different forces at work are both natural and foreign; the paradoxical nature of the presence of two churches (Roman Catholic and Church of Scotland) is sometimes presented as working for good yet other times it is in conflict. Blixen's memoir is truly literate and the importance of books and writing is evident throughout. Early in the memoir she tries to explain her wirting a book to a native. Near the end of her stay as she is selling off the furniture and other estate provisions their is a poignant moment when, as she sits on her remaining books, she comments:
"Books in a colony play a different part in your existence from what they do in Europe; there is a whole side of your life which they alone take charge of ... you feel more grateful to them, or more indignant with them, than you will ever do in civilized countries." (p.373)
Blixen's memoir of this "uncivilised" land is both memorable and effective in sweeping the reader away into a very different world. Definitely a worthwhile read.

the wildness and irregularity of the country
By David A. Baer
Now eclipsed by the Streep-Redford film presentation that appropriated its title, Karen Blixen's memoir of life on her Kenyan coffee farm speaks movingly of the more benign side of colonialism in Africa and of one European's self-evident love for the land she had made her own.

Sadly, Blixen's lush descriptions of 'her people' are often judged too quickly by modern criteria of racial attitudes, a game that is like asking this early twentieth-century writer to wrestle with one arm tied behind her back. If it can be granted that there was anything good about Europe's colonization of Africa, then Blixen (Isak Dinesen was her pen name) is its face.

She loved the land and its people, entering about as far as was plausible in her time into the remarkable rhythm of both. What more can be asked of any of us, all children of our moment and enveloped in its limitations?

This is a book for lovers of Africa, no matter whence they come. Blixen not only pushed an eloquent pen, she was herself shaped in the biblical and classical language of educated Europeans in a way that prepared her to bridge Africa and Europe in a day when few were equipped to do so.

Blixen's Africa no longer exists, as she already realized within the window of her writing of OUT OF AFRICA and SHADOWS ON THE GRASS. Yet the Africa Blixen knew has children, not to be disinherited for the generations that have passed and the unsavory disease that a legacy of failed leaders has wrought upon this great continent. Though the primary fruit of reaching behind the celluloid to *read* OUT OF AFRICA is the satisfaction of the read itself, it is also true that today's Africa and today's Africans can be glimpsed in the great-grandparents who knew and lived in proximity to this enigmatic and uniquely gifted Danish colonist in a land she mistreated only by calling it hers.

"the African Native has not handed over his country to the white man in a magnificent gesture..."
By Akethan
Several years ago, I'd read Beryl Markham's WEST WITH THE NIGHT. As taken as I was with her account - Dinesen's story punctuated by her recollections "From an Immigrants Notebook" and the closing "Farewell to the Farm" were as different in perspective and place as imaginable. The entire era in which Dinesen lived and - well - subscribed is difficult to fathom. The casual attitude of right by birth - purely by being European - over the 'Natives' even as Dinesen observes with a stunning clarity the strengths and, in some cases, triumphs of the Natives over the Whites - she holds herself separate. As if she is a scientist and is the spirit of neutrality but her tone betrays her and her off-the-cuff manner of equating Natives to monkeys speaks volumes. Still - her recall is powerful and her craft in writing is as well. She deftly and unobtrusively grafts history, language and poetry into a singular product. Some favorite examples: "A medal is an inconvenient thing to give a naked man..."; "'Let us drive as far as our graves.'"; "Here the great trackers had lost the track, and sat immovable." Her earthquake experience brought to mind Emily's from A HIGH WIND IN JAMAICA. And her use of Shakespeare as a measure of character struck a chord: "All my life I have held that you can class people according to how they may be imagined behaving to King Lear." An amazing account of a deservedly lost age.

Decent with some challenges
By The Book Chick
Definitely editing challenged and could stand a rigorous edit. A bit odd in some respects. For example, why did Nix and Fre have the Thelma and Louise thing going on and why did it warrant so much fire power? But, overall, the story was enjoyable.

It was just Ok!
By Amazon Customer
This short story was Ok at best. It could have been better if the author did not have so many unimportant details in the story. I Love paranormal books however these authors need to learn to balance the paranormal with the actual story. There were times that the story did not go along with the characteristics of paranormal. I know this is fiction but a wolf would definitely sense or smell certain things. They would be more aware of simple things. Anyway, this story is over priced and underdeveloped. It could have been better.

GREAT storyline, but rushed storytelling--4 Stars
By Iggie
I really enjoyed this book. I've been looking for a paranormal IR for a while, and this cover grabbed me. It's beautiful. Then I read the summary and thought, "Sounds good!" As I read the sample, I could already see that if the book wasn't more fleshed out, I'd run into problems with it. So here goes my review:

PLOT: 5/5 stars
Kudos Kassana for a solid plot and storyline. That is usually completely author's vision and 50% of the work, so good job.

CHARACTERS: 3/5 stars
I wasn't a big fan of Fre. There was many things she did in the story that made her that "stupid lady" to me. I won't go into them all (read the book!) but Fre is definitely an act before you think kinda girl. One example is this: She sees a puppy alone in a car, and decides, "Hey, let me break that window and rescue the pup." Okay, fine. Let's assume you're a lover of animals OR just a kind/decent soul, but then, she doesn't call the cops or leave a note or anything. She practically stole the puppy. That was the first of many infractions that made me slap the heck out of my forehead.

Rhys, although better than Fre, was underdeveloped. Or maybe I just wanted more of him. I know he's alpha, and loves his son/family, and had a crapshoot history with his ex, but what else? I can't remember if she told us how old he was, what his favorite foods were, what he did for fun...

The Six Year Old: Loved him. He was great. Some of his dialogue didn't read like a six year old but all's well. She did a great job with him.

WRITING: 3.5/5 stars
One major problem I seem to be having with ebooks is that they are RUSHED. It's like authors find this great plot, and they just want to write everything down before they forget it, which usually gets you an outline. I felt this way reading the story. Everything went rapid fast. I wish more authors would flesh out the surroundings (what is the characters seeing/observing, etc.) as opposed to, "She drove here. Then she drove there. Then she did this. Next, she did this. Then this..." The one scene I thought was done really well was the fight scene toward the end.

Overall: Pretty darn good read! Author could take some more time to flesh out some stuff, and develop characters, but if you're a fan of the genre, this is a collectible.

Air Force: An Illustrated History, by Chester G. Hearn

Read the entire history of how the USAF flies, fights, and wins.

From its beginning in 1907 as the Aeronautical Division of US Army's Signal Corps, with just one officer and two enlisted men, the United States Air Force has grown to become the foremost aerial armed force. American aviators performed valiantly in World War I with intrepid pilots such as Eddie Rickenbacker and Frank Luke leading the way.

Between the wars, aviation, commercial, and military resources around the world grew by leaps and bounds as the numbers of aircraft in service and their capabilities tremendously increased. Although the Army Air Corps, as it was known at the time, was no better prepared for World War II than the rest of the army, it had developed a highly professional corps of experienced officers who would be able to take advantage of the latest American aircraft technology like the B-17 Flying Fortress and the P-51 Mustang.

With the end of the war and the creation of an independent armed force in 1947, the United States Air Force leapt into the jet age with such icons as the F-86 Sabre and the remarkable B-52 Stratofortress. Air Force: An Illustrated History is a book that no enthusiast of the world's largest, most powerful, and most versatile air-combat force will want to miss!

Error-Filled USAF History!
By Mike O'Connor
AIR FORCE, AN ILLUSTRATED HISTORY is the worst single-volume history of the USAF I can remember reading! It's so filled with errors, misstatements, etc. you wonder whether the author thinks he knows the subject better than he actually does or he's just sloppy in writing up what he knows. It's obvious from the book Zenith Press didn't bother to double-check Hearn's manuscript before publishing it. Whatever the reason, AIR FORCE, AN ILLUSTRATED HISTORY is one badly done history.

Here's a random sampling of MISTAKES/MISTATEMENTS. p.31: All the sources I've seen credit the Lafayette Escadrille with 40-41 kills not 57. p.32: That's Capt. Alan Wilkinson not Wilkenson. p.33: None of Lufbery's 17 kills were claimed with flying with the 94th Squadron. p.50: The British did not get North American to build P-40s; Curtiss just built more plants. The Brits' request got NAA to develop the P-51. p.56: Donovan not Donavon Berlin designed the P-40. p.56: The AVG made their name flying P-40Bs not Es. (p.61/66: Why are pix of B-25s included in the 8th AF section; the 8th didn't fly 'em). p.70: The 'Tidal Wave' B-24 groups became separated because they were cruising at different speeds not because of heavy overcast. p.71: The P-47 served with (1) the 9th AF not 9th Fighter Command and that was (2) in England not Africa. p.71 again: "The P-61...never met performance expectations;" really!?! p.75: The 12th AF flew B-26s in 1943/44 not A-26s. p.92: B-24s and B-25s did not take part in the Battle of Midway; B-17s and B-26s did. p.98: Tom Lanphier did not lead the Yamamoto mission; John Mitchell did. And only one squadron - the 339th - was involved not three as Hearn alleges. And on and on and...

Let's talk MISCAPTIONED PHOTOGRAPHS. p.37: Frank Luke is standing by a downed Halberstadt biplane not a Drachen. p.64: Those 381st BG B-17s are on a training hop not on their way to Wilhelmshaven. p.74: The ball gunner is on a B-24 not a B-17. p.70: The right-hand B-24 pix was not taken during the Tidal Wave raid but a later mission. p.79: Every publication I've ever seen gives Francis Gabreski's nickname as "Gabby" but Hearn calls him "Gabe!?!" p.81: The bottom photo shows a crashed Zero not a P-40. p.88: Great caption on the A-20; unfortunately the pix is of B-25s. p.89: Dick Bong did not get the MoH and then return to combat. And he downed 12 not 15 e/a on his last tour. p. 91: There are at least 4 mistakes in the '5th AF Aces' sidebar. p.98: The bottom photo doesn't show a P-38F but an unarmed photo recce bird. p.107: Those are C-47s not C-46s. And they're not flying the Hump; they're dropping supplies. For Pete's sake, you can see 30+ parachutes in the pix! There's more in that same vein but enough already.

On top of all that, Hearn misses the point on several important topics or gives an incomplete summary of important battles/campaigns. EXAMPLE #1: the August 1943 Regensburg/Schweinfurt mission was a critical test of the 8th AF's daylight bombing theory. They lost! Sixty bombers were downed and many more put out-of-commission after the raid. Those results forced 8th AF brass to (1) question their unswerving belief in daylight bombing and (2) curtail long-range missions for several months. Hearn, on the other hand, concludes (1) the mission struck a serious blow to the GAF's ability to keep planes in the air - No, it didn't! - and (2) it marked the beginning of 100s of long-range raids. Sorry but that ignores the fact that those raids almost came to a halt after the 8th replenished its ranks and went back to Schweinfurt in October only to lose another 60 a/c. Those losses plus others put the 8th AF's campaign in serious jeopardy. Only the arrival of P-51s allowed the 8th to continue long-range missions. EXAMPLE #2: B-29s over Korea. Hearn presents a summary of B-29 use that concludes that "the strategic bombing of North Korea met every expectation." That's gilding the lily. Somehow he fails to mention the fact that B-29 losses to MiG-15s got so bad in late 1951 that they were chased from the daylight skies of Korea and forced to fly night raids only. EXAMPLE #3: Vietnam War air combat. Hearn's account of the aerial duels between US and NV units basically tails off after Operation Bolo; nothing on the fact that the VPAF were winning the air war in late 1967/early 1968; nothing on Topgun; nothing on the dismal USAF air-to-air record in 1972/73. Time and again Hearn doesn't give the reader the full story.

Short and sweet: Yes, the photos are nice but there's just too many mistakes in this book. Save your money and take a pass on this one.

Simple, but fantastic.
By Brendon
If you want a general and easy summary of the USAF, USAAF, and USAAC, then this is the book for you! Despite several small errors, the book gives a good understanding of the political and technical challenges and achievements that the Air Arm of the United States went through (All the way from the First World War to the current era. Highly recommended.

Could be more detailed. But nice enough.
By Steve K
I got this for an elderly man who wanted an Air Force Coffee Table Book for Christmas. This fits the bill. It's big enough, has a lot of pictures and descriptions. I just don't think it's complete. It doesn't go into all that much detail about the various equipment. It touches mainly upon planes, some pilots, etc, but it is by no means all-inclusive. It's nice enough, and arrived quickly and safely.

Watching YouTube: Extraordinary Videos by Ordinary People, by Michael Strangelove

An anonymous musician plays Pachelbel's Canon on the electric guitar in a clip that has been viewed over sixty million times. The Dramatic Gopher is viewed over sixteen million times, as is a severely inebriated David Hasselhoff attempting to eat a hamburger. Over 800 variations, parodies, and parodies-of-parodies are uploaded of Beyonce Knowles' Single Ladies dance. Tay Zonday sings Chocolate Rain in a video viewed almost forty million times and scores himself a record deal. Obama Girl enters the political arena with contributions such as I Got a Crush on Obama and gets coverage in mainstream news networks.

In Watching YouTube, Michael Strangelove provides a broad overview of the world of amateur online videos and the people who make them. Dr. Strangelove, the Governor General Literary Award-nominated author that Wired Magazine called a 'guru of Internet advertising,' describes how online digital video is both similar to and different from traditional home-movie-making and argues that we are moving into a post-television era characterized by mass participation.

Strangelove draws from television, film, cultural, and media studies to help define an entirely new field of research. Online practices of representation, confessional video diaries, gendered uses of amateur video, and debates over elections, religion, and armed conflicts make up the bulk of this groundbreaking study, which is supplemented by an online blog at strangelove.com/blog. An innovative and timely study, Watching YouTube raises questions about the future of cultural memory, identity, politics, warfare, and family life when everyday representational practices are altered by four billion cameras in the hands of ordinary people.

Review
'Watching YouTube is well-written, carefully researched, and a pleasure to read. Michael Strangelove beautifully brings together contemporary research and a fast-growing body of video to draw coherence and clarity from a seemingly chaotic cultural space and practice.' (Alexandra Juhasz, Department of Media Studies, Pitzer College)

'From intimate family moments caught on webcams to camcorders in the battlefields of Iraq, Strangelove provides a solid analysis of a wide variety of emerging YouTube genres, interactions, and communities. This volume will forever be a key resource to those of us who are interested in what happened in those early days of YouTube when millions of people started sharing little pieces of themselves and their lives through web video.' (Michael Wesch, Anthropology Program, Kansas State University)

Author Responds to A Review
By Michael Strangelove
In the May 2010 edition of the Literary Review of Canada Geoff Pevere reviewed Watching YouTube: Extraordinary Videos by Ordinary People (University of Toronto Press). The following is a summary of the review with responses by the author, Michael Strangelove.

Pevere's review takes the sociological significance of YouTube seriously. Unlike more frivolous commentators, such as Andrew Keen, Pevere treats the subject of Watching YouTube - amateur videographers - with the respect that they often deserve. As to the author (myself), he rightly notes that my "palpable excitement over what is happening [on YouTube] is anchored to both a historical awareness of interactive YouTube's antecedents -- like home movies and analogue videotape -- and a weighty methodological rigour." A fine compliment that acknowledges the three years of research that went into the book and the 412 sources and 588 endnotes that make up its scholarly apparatus.

Pevere kindly acknowledges that I carefully avoid the often-seen error of proclaiming yet one more Internet revolution. I am "wary of making any over-revolutionary claims for YouTube" while also being "convinced that something sociologically significant has taken place." True enough. Why write a book about something that is of no consequence?

Having followed the Internet and related media theory for almost twenty years now, I made every effort in the text to make it clear that I am not cut from the same cloth of techno-utopians or technological determinists. The future of the `Tube and society itself remain unwritten and I have no interest in playing the role of a McLuhanist new media prophet. There is money to be made in selling silicon snake oil to a public that wants a clear picture of the digital networked future, but most of YouTube and its future is still drawn in grainy low-resolution images. While YouTube is of great significance, we do not yet fully understand the nature of its significance, its final state, or all of its probable consequences.

The reviewer notes that YouTube is "arguably the most pervasive medium for public dialogue since the rise of the democratic voting system" - an interesting analogy that compares the social significance of YouTube to the rise of democracy itself, which indeed may be the case given the intensely undemocratic character of the mass media of the 20th century. Yet the reviewer gets distracted by the entertainment value of YouTube and misses the main points about its social significance that I delineate in Watching YouTube, an issue to which we shall return shortly. Nonetheless, he acknowledges that:

"what is shaping up there [on YouTube], to the tune of billions of user-made, -generated and -traded home videos, is what may be the most spectacular manifestation so far of the digital technology-driven shift from what has been called the old read-only (RO) technology to the new read-write (RW) forms of media . . . there is more to this phenomenon than the billions of minutes of user-generated images that currently occupy so much of the content of the internet and the attention of its users: the very fact of this communications tsunami compels a complete rethink of so much media theory." Rethink indeed.

The bulk of our thinking about the audience's relationship to media in the twentieth century was restricted to the institutional character of content (produced by professionals) and the economic and structural character of the delivery system (privately owned, one-way commercial media):

"It was this closed-system model of media influence that gave rise to the once widespread criticism of the media as the mass hypnotist of public wants and desires, a hypodermic anaesthetic fired directly into the heart of a supine, powerless and oblivious body politic."

YouTube and amateur online videography more or less completely shatters the old coordinates of professionally-made, privately-owned, and broadcast-based that were used for close to a century to explain media, content, and audiences. But if the old media system was simply described as a hypodermic needle that injected meanings directly into a hapless audience (which it never really was, and they never really were), one might think I have drawn a straw man to describe the complex relationship that the 20th century's active audience of had with its old master, commercial media.

In Watching YouTube I draw a clear distinction between the active audience of mass media, and the hyper-active audience of online media. The analogue audience was active only as weakly-empowered interpreter of meanings (which were only shared in a local context) while the digital audience has significantly greater powers of production (which generate globally distributed online videos). YouTube, the Internet, and digital cameras have transformed the audience from a locally significant interpreter of commercial media to a globally influential producer of entirely new cultural products.

In the end, Pevere does exactly what a good reviewer should do - he gets to the heart of the matter and summarizes 80,000 words in one sentence:

"YouTube has given voices to those members of society most likely to be presumed disenfranchised by the old model of mass media influence, and the growing cacophony of formerly marginalized perspectives has inaugurated an unforeseen dilution of the mainstream media by alternative influences."

This is precisely Watching YouTube's main argument. Marginal voices are moving center-stage, and mainstream media's influence is being diluted.

It is unfortunate that Pereve, a film and movie critic, approaches the book as if it should have been a scholarly version of Siskel and Ebert. I explicitly state in the Introduction that Watching YouTube is not an interpretive tour of YouTube videos but a survey of its broader social patterns and significances.

Yet Pereve would have preferred a "discussion of the actual content of YouTube's user-generated videos -- testimonials, pop culture parodies, domestic spats, video blogs, funny pet spectacles." This is an odd criticism as I certainly do take the reader on a journey through wedding videos (White Trash Weddin - analyzed at length), pop culture parodies (the countless Downfall memes, analyzed in three different instances), domestic spats (Tricia Walsh Smith), video blogs (numerous examples), funny pet spectacles (The Engineers Guide to Cats) and much more, so his accusation that these are "cited more than probed" is quite misleading. A wide variety of videos are explored, probed, and explained and serve as examples that typify the broader social significance of amateur online videography.

While Pereve accuses me of failing to provide the reader with "an insider's perspective on the culture" this is precisely what one will find in Watching YouTube - an intimate exploration of YouTube's culture in the tradition of media ethnography. Consider the assessment of the book by Michael Wesch, renowned anthropologist of digital culture, "Strangelove provides a solid analysis of a wide variety of emerging YouTube genres, interactions, and communities." Heady praise from the man whose anthropological analysis of YouTube culture have attracted over twelve million viewers.

The reader of Watching YouTube will encounter my bride, my father and mother, my friends, my Barbie art, my students. They will `watch' or read about me shaving my head (à la Britney Spears melt down), faking a tantrum in class, and pondering the nasty feedback a video artist can get from the YouTube community. How much more `insider' can you get?

Along with in-depth treatment of famous videos such as Charlie Bit My Finger I also discuss numerous videos that will be entirely new to most readers so as to avoid going over well covered ground. Similarly the complaint that "numbers are cited endlessly as evidence of the network's size, influence and ubiquity" is hardly fair. Aside from barely two pages of statistics in the Introduction and a sprinkling of data throughout the text Pereve overstates the "cited endlessly" nature of my presentation of data. Indeed, given the modest historical significance of Watching YouTube as one of the first books to explore such a global phenomenon and the paucity of empirical research on YouTube, the reviewer might well have said that I bring solid empirical justification for taking the size, speed, and trajectory of amateur online videography seriously where such numbers are otherwise quite rarely encountered. Some people are just hard to please...

Aside from these minor complaints, Pereve pays Watching YouTube a great compliment when he suggests that the case made is "fascinating, pertinent [and] substantial":

"Essentially, Strangelove is arguing that YouTube may be subject to contradiction (it is, after all, a corporate entity that hosts millions of individual contributions), prone to reactionary unpleasantness (there is a lot of hate and stupidity on display), rife with advertising and hustle and filled with untold hours of vapid triviality, but that this might be the price paid for a truly democratic public forum in the post-digital world."

Unfortunately, in the end Pereve mistakenly reduces the significance of the thesis of Watching YouTube to its contradictions, "By eroding certain conceptual barriers once thought unbreachable, it [YouTube] may be demonstrating nothing quite so forcefully as the possibility of a future with vigorously thriving contradictions." But there is so much more to the text than the conclusion that YouTube is rife with contradictions.

A pity that Pereve did not highlight the other thesis of Watching YouTube - the quite probable nefarious impact of amateur online videography on privacy, childhood development, and identity formation. Or the implications for political debate and public memory. Or the character of the emerging post-television audience. Or the feminization of the Internet (I cannot wait to see how certain scholars react to that one...). Or YouTube's potential to erode our rights of fair use.

Nonetheless and all in all, an author could not ask for a fairer, more gentle, and respectful review.

Not the Best in the Series
By Faith Miller
I am a big fan of the Nicci French duo and of Frieda Klein, however, the premise behind this book is not credible and detracts from the enjoyment of the book. Based on very little evidence, Frieda is being charged with the murder of her ex-boyfriend, Sandy. Without any attempt by the police to establish means, motive or opportunity, Friedas' lawyer suggest she plead guilty to manslaughter. It is never plausible that Frieda might have committed the crime nor is it plausible that based on the quite possibly planted evidence, the police would have felt the case was closed and the state plan to bring her to trial.

Once you get over the fact the story doesn't make much sense, it's enjoyable to spend time with Frieda and her friends, as it always is.
