About the Author
Peter Komarinski is a Criminal Justice Policy Analyst with the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services. He has a Master’s of Arts (Criminal Justice) and over his 30-year career has worked with a variety of criminal justice agencies including law enforcement, corrections and policy planning.
Mr. Komarinski was part of the team as New York State initiated a five million record AFIS system in 1987. His AFIS responsibilities include testing all new releases of software, latent print training using AFIS, and applying management practices to the identification process. He has published and lectured extensively on Automated Fingerprint Identification Systems to such groups as the New York City Police Department, New York State Police, Investigator Courses. He is a regular presenter at the annual meeting of the International Association for Identification.
He has held positions on the AFIS Committee of the International Association for Identification and has served as Chair of that Committee. His lectures include: Management Challenges to AFIS Interoperability, Improving Identifications through the Unsolved Latent Print File, Statistical Analysis of Identification Rates.
Mr. Komarinski has received numerous awards and certificates including: the New York State DCJS Director’s Certificate (Twice), the New York State Workforce Champion Award, the Sagem General Award, and named a Friend of Law Enforcement by the New York State Sheriff’s Association.

THis was a gift for my wife and she loved it. There are a few of these now and she adores each one. I checked one out and I admit the author came up with a clever idea which makes use of the old Golden book drawings we of a certain age fondly remember. Lots of fun and a good gift for the right person.

A unique feature of this book is the seamless way in which it deals with differences in U.S. GAAP and IFRS. Both regimes are covered simultaneously, i.e. when a topic is discussed, including the relevant journal entries and disclosures, the discussion applies equally to GAAP companies and to IFRS companies. It doesn’t matter whether the company used in a given example is from the U.S., Europe, or elsewhere. Thanks to the ongoing GAAP/IFRS convergence project, the two regimes are close enough to allow for a somewhat generic approach that allows for coverage of both regimes at the same time. In this way, the examples that are covered in the book are relevant to all readers, regardless of which regime dominates in their business environment.

Author Juliane Schober begins by focusing on the public role of Buddhist practice and the ways in which precolonial Buddhist hegemonies were negotiated. Her discussion then traces the emergence of modern Buddhist communities through the colonial experience: the disruption of traditional paradigms of hegemony and governance, the introduction of new and secular venues to power, modern concerns like nationalism, education, the public place of religion, the power of the state, and Buddhist resistance to the center. The continuing discourse and cultural negotiation of these themes draw Buddhist communities into political arenas, either to legitimate political power or to resist it on moral grounds. The book concludes with an examination of the way in which Buddhist resistance in 2007, known in the West as the Saffron Revolution, was subjugated by military secularism and the transnational pressures of a global economy.

A study of Buddhism and politics

Juliane Schober takes aim at the traditional Weberian depiction of Buddhism as an "otherworldly" religion. The book is essentially a recapitulation of Burmese history with a focus on Buddhist politics. She categorizes the role of Buddhist monks and ideology in Burma's various political debates. She's particularly insightful in trying to sort through the internal politics of the sangha, such as the tensions between the older and younger monks. The only improvement I would have suggested is a brief comparative section, comparing Burma's Buddhist politics with those of other Buddhist countries.

Is crossing swords with an old tome of 1916 worth doing?

This thin monograph of six chapters or 150 pages (plus another fifty pages of end matter) offers the unremarkable thesis that Therevada Buddhist organizations and individuals have played a major role in Myanmar politics and society, including in opposition movements such as the late 1980s protests against the ruling military junta. In a country where something like 90% of the population in Theravada Buddhist, this is exactly what one would expect. The author sets up a sort of straw dog in taking issue with Max Weber's 1916 study of Hinduism and Buddhism, referring in the bibliography merely to the book's 1958 English translation and omitting the fact that Weber published it in 1916. Weber's book was an early sociological study that has been superseded in the several decades that have passed since its publication, so Schober's preoccupation with setting herself apart from Weber seems anachronistic. Although Weber did use the term "otherworldly" to characterize aspects of Hindu and Buddhist thought that lead some religious practitioners to separate themselves from the family and society as much as possible, he also acknowledged that these religions have also been intertwined with the societies in which they have been practiced, and thus have been functional and influential in society and politics. One could point to the example of the Mauryan king Ashoka, who converted to Buddhism and worked hard to spread the faith not only within India but also abroad. So the notion that Schober is somehow freeing us readers from the image of a politically passive and nonviolent Buddhist culture in Myanmar and elsewhere in the region is sorely mistaken.
There are other problems with this study. The book's emphasis on the Buddhist majority also tends to obscure the significance of non-Buddhist minorities in Burmese border regions. Moreover, the book's contention that two more generations will be needed for Myanmar's "postcolonial project" to unfold has been overtaken by rapid movement in the direction of more political liberalization in recent years, as Aung San's legalized secular political party has emerged as a more powerful political force than the Buddhist organizations in which Schober has put so much stock.
Overall, this book was conceptually disappointing and mediocre.

For understanding religion-political identities in Myanmar, a must!

As someone who has worked closely with self-identified religious/political refugees from Myanmar and who is studying the subject at an academic level, Dr. Juliane Schober deals with the complexities of identity, historical, anthropological, religious tradition, political issues with finesse. My only critique was the level of waxing over political figure Aung San Suu Kyi, who is the darling of Liberal democratic movements. Her position on religious minorities remains to be seen. Also more might have been said regarding patron-client relationships in the delta region mentioned by Taylor in his work(s) on Myanmar. However, if there is anyone studying Myanmar political issues and they ignore this scholarship on religious makeup of the ethnic majority, their work is sure to come up short. Easy to read. Well sourced. Credibly published.

Chinese Civil War Armies 1911-49

For the past 20 years, I have been looking for a book that describes uniforms and equipments used by the Chinese Armies during WW II. This book is the one I have waited for. It is precious because I know it is impossible for a Chinese author to write a book as such without any political overtone, and I was wondering why would anyone else have the interest. This book is smartly titled "Chinese Civil War Armies", not "Chinese World War II Armies" to reflect the internal conflict within the country during that time. The detail description of the uniforms and equipments, as well as the historical accounts are execellent. The color plates are unprecedented. My only criticisms are 1. There is no glossary for all the tranlated Chinese terms mentioned in the book. 2. The text and the related pictures are far apart. I congradulate the author, Mr. Jowett, for the monumental book.

Good not great

I think the book tries to cover to much in to little space. I would have preferred to see three books instead of one...The first one would cover the Warlord period up to the early 1930s...the second would focus on the conflict between Japan and China from the early 30s through WW2...the last would focus on the struggle between the Communists and the Nationalists...clearly there is some overlap here, but that should be easily handled by good authors...

I've lived near the beach for close to thirty years, so it was fun to finally write about it. This book had many inspirations; every time I visit a local beach and watch the tourists in their kayaks, the barking sea lions and experience the stinky smell, I chuckle and think about my book. The theme of this book is freedom, and I wanted to explore how freedom is experienced by different characters. I've written a suspense and a romance, and this time around I wanted to combine the two. Enjoy reading!

This would be an excellent book for a high school English class

This book is deceiving in that the beginning does not tell you what the book is about. As you continue, everything starts coming together and all the plots intertwine. It is extremely interesting with lots of unexpected results. This would be an excellent book for a high school English class. There is no bad language or vulgar overtones yet it has a lot of different topics to discuss. I very much enjoyed reading this book.

Best beach read of the summer!

A page turner of a mystery taking place in a typical Southern California beach town. The plot is both gripping and believable, and the characters are well-developed and reflect typical personas found in any beach city. So realistic (I live in a beach town myself), I was sure I was going to read about a local haunt on the very next page. The best beach read of the summer!

Suspenseful Beach Read!

What a fabulous read I had this summer with The Smallest of Waves by Janice Coy! This book drove me a bit crazy, though, because I'd be at work and want to get home so I could read another chapter...... or two...........or three! The author introduced just the right number of characters so that the reader was able to follow the intertwined story lines easily, but not predictably. I want to point out that not only was this a suspenseful read, it was also educational. The author put a great deal of research into various aspects of her storyline which assisted the reader with a clear visualization of events. You can see each character (including a cute little dog), you can feel, see, smell,( while chewing your fingernails --- suspense!) and wander your way through each well-crafted chapter. Loved it!

THE USS ENTERPRISE BOOK IS INCREDIBLE!

THE USS ENTERPRISE BOOK IS INCREDIBLE! I served on the USS Enterprise CVN-65 from 1986-1990. I completed 2 cruises. The first was a Western Pacific Cruise in 1988. The second was the 1990 World Cruise. I was 17-21 years old.I fueled jets and helos on the flight deck and spent 6 months as a guard in the brig (jail guard). Yes, there is a jail on board. I even watched Alec Baldwin and Fred Thompson film for the movie "The Hunt for Red October", Top Gun was also filmed on this famous ship. I bought this book and it brought back so many memories. It is the complete history of the "Big E" from laying the keel to it's decommissioning last year after 51 years of service. It is the first nuclear powered carrier and the biggest ship in the world for decades. The pictures are beautiful and plentiful. The Big E was in every conflict since 1961. From the Cuban Missile Crisis to the War on Terror. I bought my book a bit hesitant (because money is tight), but I am VERY HAPPY I did! I read when I go to bed and I've read the book from cover to cover (almost 700 pages) because it was so fun and interesting, it took me about a month (which doesn't happen often). It is the USS Enterprise encyclopedia, very detailed and precise. If you served, know a vet, a vet from the Big E or just intrigued about the best US Navy (I guess I am a bit biased) ship ever built, this is the book! I am buying another to keep it in mint shape as the ship is currently being dismantled and now part of history. I'm excited about USS ENTERPRISE CVN-80, which is scheduled to be built in the next decade or so. I am so proud I served on the Big E , it changed my life. Happy Holidays!

Fantastic book with great photos, many I had not seen before. Very easy to read with a huge amount of detail on every aspect of this great ship's history and operational detail covered. Great video from TV3 NZ [...]

Awesome Book!

This was bought for a retired Naval Commander who was on this ship at one time. He was totally thrilled with the content & one of his helicopter rescues is mentioned in this book. He is very pleased!
