Review
"A stunning achievement. I am ready to relocate to Dinotopia — especially if they are hiring paleontologists at their museum." -- M.K. Brett-Surman Ph.D., National Museum of Natural History

"Gurney draws the reader/looker/adventurer ever further into a surfeit of imaginative mysteries illuminating the sumptuous crypto-realm of Dinotopia: here is a treasure to be read and reread over a lifetime." -- John Stilgoe, Harvard University

"Gurney's meticulous draftsmanship and delicate sense of color combine to create a powerful vision of a full and complete world." -- John A. Parks, American Artist

"I thought the first two books in the Dinotopia series could not be topped, but I was proved wrong. Dinotopia: Journey to Chandara takes the adventure to a whole new level and new dimensions. The technique of light and detail is so stunning that I would find myself going back to look at the paintings again and again to see if I had missed something, and invariably I had. The human faces and costumes are wonderfully observed, and the animals, well, they are just so real. I expected them to move." -- Ray Harryhausen

"Jim Gurney's latest in a series of stunning masterworks, Journey to Chandara, is a visual feast of magnificent imaginative pictures. He has created another seamless weave of flawless drawing and gorgeous painterly color. Displaying late 19th Century art disciplines combined with a sensually elevated sense of wonder, Jim's work continues to move upward from plateau to artistic plateau. Lucky us — we are all the beneficiaries of his hard and inspiring work!" —William Stout -- —William Stout

"With lush settings reminiscent of Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema, colorful characters cast from Norman Rockwell, and vivacious dinosaurs conjured from the spirit of Charles Knight, Dinotopia: Journey to Chandara is a window into this modern master's mind. Children and adults alike will enjoy exploring this rich world of Jurassic proportions." —Tony DiTerlizzi, Arthur Spiderwick's Field Guide -- —Tony DiTerlizzi, Arthur Spiderwick's Field Guide

Like owning fine art!
By Richard K.
I have been a fan of Dinotopia for about 15 years. I wondered if Mr. Gurney would ever take us back there. He did with as much skill and depth as expected, perhaps a little more. This is a childrens book that appeals to this adult. As an painter, I can only admire and one day hope to produce something this great. If only I could paint a cloud like this man...This is a lavish book of fantasy paintings that could only be described as a treasure.

Some tastes do not care for this style of painting-the Hudson Valley School. Its retro style florished before photography. Light and color captured every detail of the landscape. Now, in our HD world, this style is obsolete, right? Gurney's depiction of the creatures who actually lived on this planet, lets the viewer imagine what went over all of those bones that are found every year. Not only that, his "lost world" that is further documented.

Children will devour this. Dinosaurs are fun, scary and in this book, loveable. The whole Dinotopia mythology is set in the mid 19th C. Perhaps the world had an unexplored appeal back then. We have satellites that document every corner of the planet now. Perhaps, this age of innocence works so well here because there are no more frontiers on the planet. Other than space, there are no more places to explore. That is why I love it so much.

I finished it and was left wanting more. There are so many other villages and ruined temples left to document. The plot is not relevant here. The setting and the dinosaurs are the stars. You have to love Bix! Chandara is a perfect place to spend your vacation in.

Nostalgic, Gorgeous, if a little lacking in adventure
By Erin M. Ellingwood
I would give this book 4 1/2 stars if Amazon allowed such a rating. The Dinotopia books were two of my favorite books when I was growing up. Even before I could understand the words, the pictures captivated my complete attention and imagination. And when I was old enough to understand the stories, the books became even more compelling.

"Journey to Chandara" is a fitting book to join the series. The paintings, as always, are stunning, as is the wide array of dinosaurs (real and not) that you encounter. Like its predecessors, "Chandara" made me wish I lived in Dinotopia. However, the story itself lacks the sense of adventure and urgency that so captivated me in the first two books. Instead, its more of an exploration across the parts of Dinotopia the readers haven't yet seen, an excuse to take a journey through more intriguing civilizations.

The shortcomings of the plot are more than made up for by every other part of the book. Children of all ages will enjoy "Chandara", regardless of whether it's the pictures or the anthropological story that ensnares them.
