Dark, twisted, and sweet.

This is not a children's story.
At least, not until they're much older, and much less susceptible to nightmares. It is, however, _very_ well written, and even with a large portion of the story being pictures, it still manages to invoke a great deal of imagination and implication in the reader's mind, preferring to hint at things that happen off-scene and in between rather than any explicit visuals (mostly gore and "things in the dark"). I got this for my wife (a long-time Sandman fan, and also a fan of Patrick's other works) for her birthday, and we both loved it.
There are three endings. Each leads on from the previous, and each provides a different feel to the book if you stop there. Feel free to stop at the one you like. (:

not for 1st,2nd,3rd graders

I did enjoy this book,but not alot. I am not a horror fan generally. If you are,if your child is, you may both like it. Only for older and more sophisticated kids,not younger than 8,as the book may cause lingering fears and nightmares,so know your audience.

I truly did enjoy this book

If you are looking to purchase your first Mr. Whiffle book, then purchase The Thing Beneath The Bed instead. While this book is longer and explores some interesting subject matter, it also is trying to repeat a trick that only works once. Read the original. Don't get me wrong, I truly did enjoy this book. It simply doesn't have the impact of the first entry in the series.
