Visiting her dying grandmother in hospital is not what 17 year old Emily wants to be doing for New Year's Eve, but it's not like she has anything else to do. Leaving the hospital, she meets a teen-aged boy named Alex, who is also leaving. When he invites her to go for a burger with him and his sister, she goes along. What Emily doesn't know is that Alex, too, is dying, their meeting is not a coincidence, and she is in for a New Year's Eve unlike any other.
Before We Go is the moving story of three kids propelled toward a surprising future by family secrets that have spanned generations.

Review
"Impressively, Bright, a first-time novelist, has crafted a novel whose entire events, character development and storyline take place in less than twelve hours. Despite the short time frame, the pacing of the novel is relatively well set; never at one point did the reader feel rushed. This structured pacing is likely due to the author's adept use at alternating blocks of dialogue with descriptive text. In this way, the reader was privy to both descriptions of the surrounding environment, which allowed for the contextualization of the characters? actions, as well as the teenage vocabulary that permeated the dialogue, allowing for a clearer understanding of their actions and motivations. . .
"Teenage audiences will take a liking to Before We Go, given the age-appropriate dialogue that peppers the book?s more than 200 pages. While the read was off to a slow start, the balanced description with dialogue and the absence of a clichéd ending showcased the storyline that was impressively developed within the short time frame of this novel."

"Sometimes I want to hit Alex in the shoulder like I used to. With mythumb over my knuckles the way they taught us in gym class. I know theplace where you can hit people that's sort of in between the muscles. It really hurts.
Stuff like that's a game because he's my brother. I mean, I hit himnow and then maybe at dinner he says something at the table like, "HeyMom and Dad, Lucy didn't go to school today" and then we'll be evenuntil next time.
We kind of lost that. It's gone because of the bruises and thenosebleeds that he gets when something happens like normal only hisbody thinks he's dying. So I stick out my tongue instead. Alex looks atthe TV and loses his smile because he knows it's missing, our usual backand forth."

Before We Go by Amy Bright
By Michael Pollard, Lethbridge Children's Literature Roundtable
I am usually wary of reading first novels by new authors because getting your feet wet as a new author invariably includes growing pains. These growing pains are sometimes all too obvious and take away from the enjoyment of the story that is being told.
I am delighted to say that this was not the case with my reading of Before We Go, Amy Bright's debut novel for young adults. It is an ambitious undertaking in several respects and the crafting of the story, the quality of the writing, and the attention given to the development of her characters surpassed all my expectations.
Her story is set in Victoria and begins on New Year's Eve with 17-year-old Emily visiting her dying grandmother in hospital. Her grandmother is the woman who raised her and with whom she has lived most of her life. Emily's mom is a single mom living and working as a journalist in Vancouver. Her career keeps her in Vancouver and busy much of the time and is a reason Emily has been raised by her grandparents. Emily doesn't know her father and her mother won't tell her who he is and this is a source of major tension between them.
As Emily leaves the hospital this New Year's Eve she meets a teen-aged boy named Alex who invites her to go for a burger with him and his sister Lucy. Emily agrees because she doesn't want to spend New Year's Eve by herself. What she doesn't know is that Alex is also dying and he and his sister have planned this one last 'escape' from the hospital so that Alex can leave behind the rounds of chemotherapy and hospital recovery time and enjoy some 'normal' teenage living.
Their night on the town takes them to several places and eventually to a New Year's Eve party. Along the way we learn that the meeting between Emily and Alex is not coincidental and that family secrets have brought them together and will shape their lives and change them in ways none of them could have expected.
I can't recall another young adult novel I have read where the story takes place entirely within a single day. It is an interesting and engaging way to structure a plot and Amy has done it with skill and careful consideration of her readers. Each time I wanted more information about the characters and their past so that I could better understand their current situations, it was provided to me. I felt throughout the story that I knew what I needed to know to appreciate the characters and their interactions with each other. This is a challenging way to write a narrative and in this case is done with skill and attention to the reader.
I especially liked Emily and the loving and careful way her character was developed. I could easily identify with her feelings of loneliness as she struggled to find her way and her place within her family. The exchange between her and Tyler at the end of the story is especially moving. I knew from the moment she resisted him and got out of the car that her strength and courage would see her through whatever her future held for her.
I have to say that on first reading the ending seemed abrupt and disappointing. It was there and I wasn't ready for it! Good writers always do that to me! It's over before I want it to be over. I so wanted to know how Emily would deal with the new realities in her life and what happens to Alex and to Lucy and... but, unfortunately, my imagination will have to fill in the rest of the story!
Young adults and adults of all ages will enjoy Before We Go. I look forward to Amy Bright's next novel with anticipation.
