The Kingdom of This World, by Alejo Carpentier

A few years after its liberation from the brutality of French colonial rule in 1803, Haiti endured a period of even greater brutality under the reign of King Henri-Christophe, who was born a slave in Grenada but rose to become the first black king in the Western Hemisphere. In prose of often dreamlike coloration and intensity, Alejo Carpentier records the destruction of the black regime―built on the same corruption and contempt for human life that brought down the French while embodying the same hollow grandeur of false elegance, attained only through slave labor―in an orgy of voodoo, race hatred, madness, and erotomania.

The Kingdom of this World
By A Customer
Not long after Haiti's liberation from French colonial rule, King Henri-Christophe reigned through an era of chaos, violence, superstition and socio-political upheaval.
Carpentier details the story of this era, and the eventual overthrowing of Henri-Christophe's black regime, through the narrative of slave Ti-Noel.
For me, the interesting thing about this book was the way in which Carpentier shows how the black regime failed on the same sort of grounds that caused the French regime to become corrupt, outwardly oppulent and inwardly self-destructive. I find it very reminiscent of the sort of dialogue popularized by Freire's "Pedagogy of the Oppressed" where he explains how, in an effort to overthrow an oppressive system of education (but this has to work, to some extent, for politics, culture, etc) the rebels end up instituting essentially the same sort of system---only with themselves at the top instead of bottom.
The novel also deals convincingly with issues of cultural patrimony, the occult, and obviously with historical and political scenario. As with many of his books, Carpentier combines a strong dedication to the factual or realistic history with allegory, metaphor and allusion.
The writing style is fairly dense and I did find it difficult to read the novel straight through. However, I found the read very rewarding and also enlightening.

Real, Raw and Gritty
By Pilar Arsenec - Ordinary Servant Book Reviews
B-More Careful was a raw and gritty account of what takes place in the life of the streets. The premise of the story was based on betrayal, deception and treachery.

I would have rated this book five stars had it not been for the excessive typos and grammatical errors I came across. Nevertheless, Shannon Holmes is an exceptional and talented writer.

B-More Careful was fast paced. I was able to visualize and feel everything as if I was there.

I admit, I had a difficult time getting through this story. The characters and content felt so real to me. In reading this story, which took place in Baltimore, I came to understand the realities of the streets. The game is certainly not a lifestyle I would want to be a part of, because of all the danger, backstabbing, jealousy, envy, betrayal, greed and revenge which is paramount.

B-More Careful emphasized the life of drugs, money, sex and murder. There is nothing glamorous or attractive about it based on what I read. This story made me sad.

Shannon Holmes did not sugar coat anything. He gave it to you straight and to the point. The characters who stood out for me were Black, Netta and Mimi. Black and Netta being the most ruthless of them all.

Unfortunately, there was no happy Hollywood ending either. All in all, B-More Careful taught me a great deal and opened my eyes to the harsh realities of a world I knew very little about.

One of the best
By SC
I am an avid reader of urban fiction and non-fiction African American literature. This book offers an exciting mixture of the two. For instance, the gritty truth of hard-core living in poverty- stricken urban cities mixes with the exciting story of sex, greed, betrayal and lies, friendships, and family. His plot is dynamic and his characters are ego-driven. I read this book twice (both in a matter of days). Shannon Holmes is an excellent writer as he keeps reader's interest throughout every page. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone seeking a release from the ordinary looking for an exciting world to imaging oneself in.

it took forever for them to finally talk openly
By RomReader
Estranged wife sees her husband Hero again after she suddenly left him 3 years before. They have to pretend to be happily married to find the culprit who's planning on sabotaging the royalty of a little European kingdom. Their work together shows them they still have strong feelings for each other. But heroine can see that Hero is still very much married to his military career. Hero on the other hand still doesn't understand why she left what he thought was a good marriage. When will these 2 openly talk about what happened in the past?

It took until page 142 for Hero & heroine to finally talk about why she left him 3 years ago. For 141 pages, they tiptoed around the issue. Their marriage must've been based on sex & niceties if these 2 couldn't even talk about why she left for weeks when they say each other again & not even considering the 3 years that passed when they could've emailed or phoned or wrote each other. Heroine wanted Hero to prove she meant more to him than his military job by chasing after her when she left him. But he didn't because of his pride & this strange sense of respecting her space. So she keeps her miscarriage & her feelings about being abandoned by Hero due to his job a secret all that time. While Hero kept his love & waiting for heroine to go back to him all to himself too. These 2 were driving me nuts with their passivity & secret pinings! The sexual chemistry was good but it was pretty much the only thing going for them. The only other thing I liked about these 2 were that both remained celibate during their 3-year estrangement.

The action-suspense parts were predictable & uninteresting. They seem like page-fillers & gave an excuse for the main characters to see each other again. Overall pacing dragged.

Minimally recommended.

Mediocre
By Cloggie Downunder
Tycoon Warrior is a book by Sheri Whitefeather in the Texas Cattleman’s Club: Lone Star Jewels series. Dakota Lewis, ex-soldier, is still involved in dangerous missions. And it was during such a mission that his wife, Kathy left him. But she has never told him why, and she is beginning to feel guilty about that. For one thing, she still loves him. For another, she might just be asking something of Dakota that is unreasonable. This is a somewhat tedious romance that pivots on the lack of communication between husband and wife. The hero is rather too perfect; the heroine, simply frustrating. It is part of a series, but can be read as a stand-alone. It would have benefitted from some judicious editing. Mediocre.

The story drags
By Becka
This is the second story in this series that was like this: there is no communication between the main characters and the story drags out until it is almost painful. No... it was painful! I kept hoping that there was more to the story than regrets and sadness, but I ended up pretty disappointed. Especially at the end with the way the characters reacted to something very important that would affect the rest of their lives. I want to say more, but I don't want to give out spoilers... so I'll say I should have went with my gut and passed on this one. 2 1/2 stars

Visiting her dying grandmother in hospital is not what 17 year old Emily wants to be doing for New Year's Eve, but it's not like she has anything else to do. Leaving the hospital, she meets a teen-aged boy named Alex, who is also leaving. When he invites her to go for a burger with him and his sister, she goes along. What Emily doesn't know is that Alex, too, is dying, their meeting is not a coincidence, and she is in for a New Year's Eve unlike any other.
Before We Go is the moving story of three kids propelled toward a surprising future by family secrets that have spanned generations.

Review
"Impressively, Bright, a first-time novelist, has crafted a novel whose entire events, character development and storyline take place in less than twelve hours. Despite the short time frame, the pacing of the novel is relatively well set; never at one point did the reader feel rushed. This structured pacing is likely due to the author's adept use at alternating blocks of dialogue with descriptive text. In this way, the reader was privy to both descriptions of the surrounding environment, which allowed for the contextualization of the characters? actions, as well as the teenage vocabulary that permeated the dialogue, allowing for a clearer understanding of their actions and motivations. . .
"Teenage audiences will take a liking to Before We Go, given the age-appropriate dialogue that peppers the book?s more than 200 pages. While the read was off to a slow start, the balanced description with dialogue and the absence of a clichéd ending showcased the storyline that was impressively developed within the short time frame of this novel."

"Sometimes I want to hit Alex in the shoulder like I used to. With mythumb over my knuckles the way they taught us in gym class. I know theplace where you can hit people that's sort of in between the muscles. It really hurts.
Stuff like that's a game because he's my brother. I mean, I hit himnow and then maybe at dinner he says something at the table like, "HeyMom and Dad, Lucy didn't go to school today" and then we'll be evenuntil next time.
We kind of lost that. It's gone because of the bruises and thenosebleeds that he gets when something happens like normal only hisbody thinks he's dying. So I stick out my tongue instead. Alex looks atthe TV and loses his smile because he knows it's missing, our usual backand forth."

Before We Go by Amy Bright
By Michael Pollard, Lethbridge Children's Literature Roundtable
I am usually wary of reading first novels by new authors because getting your feet wet as a new author invariably includes growing pains. These growing pains are sometimes all too obvious and take away from the enjoyment of the story that is being told.

I am delighted to say that this was not the case with my reading of Before We Go, Amy Bright's debut novel for young adults. It is an ambitious undertaking in several respects and the crafting of the story, the quality of the writing, and the attention given to the development of her characters surpassed all my expectations.

Her story is set in Victoria and begins on New Year's Eve with 17-year-old Emily visiting her dying grandmother in hospital. Her grandmother is the woman who raised her and with whom she has lived most of her life. Emily's mom is a single mom living and working as a journalist in Vancouver. Her career keeps her in Vancouver and busy much of the time and is a reason Emily has been raised by her grandparents. Emily doesn't know her father and her mother won't tell her who he is and this is a source of major tension between them.

As Emily leaves the hospital this New Year's Eve she meets a teen-aged boy named Alex who invites her to go for a burger with him and his sister Lucy. Emily agrees because she doesn't want to spend New Year's Eve by herself. What she doesn't know is that Alex is also dying and he and his sister have planned this one last 'escape' from the hospital so that Alex can leave behind the rounds of chemotherapy and hospital recovery time and enjoy some 'normal' teenage living.

Their night on the town takes them to several places and eventually to a New Year's Eve party. Along the way we learn that the meeting between Emily and Alex is not coincidental and that family secrets have brought them together and will shape their lives and change them in ways none of them could have expected.

I can't recall another young adult novel I have read where the story takes place entirely within a single day. It is an interesting and engaging way to structure a plot and Amy has done it with skill and careful consideration of her readers. Each time I wanted more information about the characters and their past so that I could better understand their current situations, it was provided to me. I felt throughout the story that I knew what I needed to know to appreciate the characters and their interactions with each other. This is a challenging way to write a narrative and in this case is done with skill and attention to the reader.

I especially liked Emily and the loving and careful way her character was developed. I could easily identify with her feelings of loneliness as she struggled to find her way and her place within her family. The exchange between her and Tyler at the end of the story is especially moving. I knew from the moment she resisted him and got out of the car that her strength and courage would see her through whatever her future held for her.

I have to say that on first reading the ending seemed abrupt and disappointing. It was there and I wasn't ready for it! Good writers always do that to me! It's over before I want it to be over. I so wanted to know how Emily would deal with the new realities in her life and what happens to Alex and to Lucy and... but, unfortunately, my imagination will have to fill in the rest of the story!

Young adults and adults of all ages will enjoy Before We Go. I look forward to Amy Bright's next novel with anticipation.

The Happiness Hypothesis: Finding Modern Truth in Ancient Wisdom, by Jonathan Haidt

This is a book about ten great ideas. Each chapter is an attempt to savor one idea that has been discovered by several of the world's civilizations - to question it scientifically, and to extract from it the lessons that apply to our modern lives.Jonathan Haidt skillfully combines two genres#151;philosophical wisdom and scientific research#151;delighting the reader with surprising insights. He explains, for example, why we have such difficulty controlling ourselves and sticking to our plans; why no achievement brings lasting happiness, yet a few changes in your life can have profound effects, and why even confirmed atheists experience spiritual elevation. In a stunning final chapter, Haidt addresses the grand question "How can I live a meaningful life?," offering an original answer that draws on the rich inspiration of both philosophy and science.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak, lamented St. Paul, and this engrossing scientific interpretation of traditional lore backs him up with hard data. Citing Plato, Buddha and modern brain science, psychologist Haidt notes the mind is like an "elephant" of automatic desires and impulses atop which conscious intention is an ineffectual "rider." Haidt sifts Eastern and Western religious and philosophical traditions for other nuggets of wisdom to substantiate—and sometimes critique—with the findings of neurology and cognitive psychology. The Buddhist-Stoic injunction to cast off worldly attachments in pursuit of happiness, for example, is backed up by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi's studies into pleasure. And Nietzsche's contention that what doesn't kill us makes us stronger is considered against research into post-traumatic growth. An exponent of the "positive psychology" movement, Haidt also offers practical advice on finding happiness and meaning. Riches don't matter much, he observes, but close relationships, quiet surroundings and short commutes help a lot, while meditation, cognitive psychotherapy and Prozac are equally valid remedies for constitutional unhappiness. Haidt sometimes seems reductionist, but his is an erudite, fluently written, stimulating reassessment of age-old issues. (Jan.)

From Booklist
Using the wisdom culled from the world's greatest civilizations as a foundation, social psychologist Haidt comes to terms with 10 Great Ideas, viewing them through a contemporary filter to learn which of their lessons may still apply to modern lives. He first discusses how the mind works and then examines the Golden Rule ("Reciprocity is the most important tool for getting along with people"). Next, he addresses the issue of happiness itself--where does it come from?--before exploring the conditions that allow growth and development. He also dares to answer the question that haunts most everyone--What is the meaning of life?--by again drawing on ancient ideas and incorporating recent research findings. He concludes with the question of meaning: Why do some find it? Balancing ancient wisdom and modern science, Haidt consults great minds of the past, from Buddha to Lao Tzu and from Plato to Freud, as well as some not-so-greats: even Dr. Phil is mentioned. Fascinating stuff, accessibly expressed. June Sawyers

Review
Library Journal, Best Books 2006
“With singular gusto, Haidt measures ten ‘Great Ideas’ against past/present research in psychology and science. LJ ‘s verdict: Dr. Phil et al. don’t have diddly on the old-school sages. No man is an island, indeed, and no modern reader should be without this carefully considered demystification of life.”

Darrin McMahon, The Washington Post
“[T]he psychologist Jonathan Haidt shows in his wonderfully smart and readable The Happiness Hypothesis: Finding Modern Truth in Ancient Wisdom [that] modern science and history have a lot to say to each other."

People
“[An] inspiring nuanced study.”

Nature
“This is a delightful book.... Haidt’s writing embraces spiritual and mystical viewpoints while retaining scientific and rational coherence.”

Guardian (London)
“[A] marvelous book.... I don’t think I’ve ever read a book that laid out the contemporary understanding of the human condition with such simple clarity and sense.”

Psychology Today
“Haidt’s remedy for the modern glut of frivolous self-help literature is to review and revise the classics, examining the ideas of thinkers like Plato, Buddha and Jesus in light of modern research into human behavior. Along the way, Haidt, a social psychologist, provides practical advice for parenting, romance, work and coping with the political and cultural divisions currently preoccupying the country. The new science he outlines mostly confirms ancient wisdom, but Haidt finds several instances where the two disagree, suggesting that the surest path to happiness is to embrace and balance both old and new thinking.”

Sunday Times (London)
“This unusual book sets itself apart from the self-help category with its extensive scientific references, and intelligent, neutral prose, while the author’s illuminating illustration of how the human mind works is both educational and refreshing.”

“Haidt has served up a hearty dish of conventional wisdom, accompanied by a selection of psychological science of excellent vintage.... This book not only offers practical suggestions to help us succeed in these efforts, but also discusses why we should reexamine much of what we have been taught in the light of new psychological knowledge.”

Seattle Times
“A disarming, original book, reassuring to those more conversant with worriment than merriment.... Smart and serious without pomposity.”

The Oregonian
“Haidt explains why what doesn't kill us makes us stronger and why the Golden Rule works.”

Library Journal
“A fresh, serious, elevating guide to living everyday life better.”

Bookpage
“Haidt is a fine guide on this journey between past and present, discussing the current complexities of psychological theory with clarity and humor.... Haidt’s is an open-minded, robust look at philosophy, psychological fact and spiritual mystery, of scientific rationalism and the unknowable ephemeral – an honest inquiry that concludes that the best life is, perhaps, one lived in the balance of opposites.”

Antonio Damasio, author of Looking for Spinoza
“Jonathan Haidt leaves no doubt about the importance of emotion in the creation of personal meaning. This is a delightful and courageous book.”

David M. Buss, author of The Evolution of Desire:  Strategies of Human Mating
“The Happiness Hypothesis is a wonderful and nuanced book that provides deep insight into the some of the most important questions in life—Why are we here?  What kind of life should we lead?  What paths lead to happiness? From the ancient philosophers to cutting edge scientists, Haidt weaves a tapestry of the best and the brightest. His highly original work on elevation and awe—two long-neglected emotions--adds a new weave to that tapestry.  A truly inspiring book.”

Daniel Wegner, author of The Illusion of Conscious Will
“Should we live our lives by age-old wisdom or the latest discoveries? Haidt gives us the luxury of not having to choose, bringing together both sources of insight in this sparkling investigation into the psychology of life and happiness.”

William Damon, Director, Stanford Center on Adolescence and author of The Moral Child
“It would be something of an exaggeration to say that Jonathan Haidt has found the final answer to happiness, but he has come as close as any other writer of our times. Every page of his book provides gems of insight about the good life and where to look for it. Anyone who is interested in humannature and its potential must read this book.”

Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, author of FLOW
"This fresh and original book goes to the heart of what people have found out about happiness, across cultures and times. Enjoyable, important, and eminently readable."

David G. Myers, Professor of Psychology, Hope College, author of Intuition: Its Powers and Its Perils
“An intellectual tour de force that weaves into one fabric wisdom that is ancient and modern, religious and scientific, Eastern and Western, liberal and conservative—all with the aim of pointing us to a more meaningful, moral, and satisfying life.”

Barry Schwartz, author of The Paradox of Choice: Why More Is Less
“In this beautifully written book, Jonathan Haidt shows us the deep connection that exists between cutting-edge psychological research and the wisdom of the ancients. It is inspiring to see how much modern psychology informs life's most central and persistent questions”

Martin E.P. Seligman, Director, Positive Psychology Center at the University of Pennsylvania and author of Authentic Happiness
“In our quest for happiness, we must find a balance between modern science and ancient wisdom, between East and West, and between ‘left brain’ and ‘right brain.’ Jon Haidt has struck that balance perfectly, and in doing so has given us the most brilliant and lucid analysis of virtue and well-being in the entire literature of positive psychology. For the reader who seeks to understand happiness, my advice is: Begin with Haidt.”

An Enjoyable Read!
By Dan Wallace
I saw Chris Anderson (Wired Editor and TED co-founder) asked by Charlie Rose to name his favorite book of the last few years. "The Happiness Hypothesis" was the immediate response. Now this book is one of my favorites, too. The Happiness Hypothesis compares traditional philisohpical traditions with the lastest scientific discoveries, and the two ends meet well in the center. The author's own experiences provide narrative glue.

A major finding is that happiness is a set point for us, and that after good times and bad, we tend to return to our general level of happiness. At the same time, we can do things that help or hurt our happiness, and we can understand better how our minds and emotions work.

Factors that decrease happiness include persistent noise, lack of control, shame, dysfunctional relationships, and long commutes. Strong marriages, physical touch, meaningful relationships and religious affiliation tend to improve happiness. Activities with others enhance our happiness; status objects tend to separate us from others.

In terms of parenting, Haidt finds that secure children are well supported by parents who are nearby, providing safety and security. Avoidant children are neglected by their parents. And resistant children have parents who alternate between support and neglect. Haidt also shows how moral relativism is not good for children.

I was also fascinated by Haidt's observation that modernity and commercial culture slowly replaced the ideal of character with the idea personality, leading to a focus on individual preferences and personal fulfillment. This movement reached a height during the "values clarification" movement of the 1960s which taught no morality at all. The result of this is "anomie," a lost sense of self and right or wrong and feeling of being detached from other people and the world.

One of the most hopeful sections of the book talks about Martin Seligman's work on positive psychology, and the rediscovery of virtue. Seligman and Chris Peterson researched wisdom traditions and found that these six virtues are common across almost all cultures: (1) Wisdom; (2) Courage; (3) Humanity; (4) Justice; (5) Temperance; (6) Transcendence. These six categories serve to organize 24 character traits. (You can find the complete list on Wikipedia.) The conclusion is that you should work to cultivate your strengths, not your weaknesses. This area of study is a great breakthrough after 100 years of the psychological study of mental illness.

There were also many insightful nuggets I found in the excellent book, including:

- How oxytocin, cortisols and endorphins effect health and behavior.
- Haidt's belief that the chief causes of evil are moral idealism and high self-esteem.
- Letting off steam makes you angrier, not calmer.
- Wisdom is the ability to adapt, shape the environment, and know when to move to new environments.
- Pleasure comes more from making progress toward goals than from achieving them.
- Social constraints enhance happiness; total freedom decreases happiness (an insight seconded in "The Paradox of Choice").
- Trauma has benefits in that it shows how much adversity you can cope with. It also filters out false friends and changes priorities and philosophies toward the present.
- Passionate love cannot last; companionate love is what lasts.
- Haidt sees two types of diversity, demographic and moral.
- The three major dimensions of social relationships are liking, status and morality/ transcendence. Coherence across these spectrums leads to happiness.
- The six basic emotions that can be read on the face include joy, sadness, fear, anger, disgust and surprise.
- Happiness often results from the collective elevation in a church or political rally.
- The three levels of work are a job, a career and a calling. The more autonomy at work, the more happiness.
- Vital engagement in the world leads to love made visible, which is a sign of deep happiness.
- Work that does good for others and leads to income and recognition will enhance happiness.
- Apostates who try to leave a group and traitors who undermine a group are subject to atrocities.
- Group chanting can lead to mystical experiences, which provide a sense of spiritual connection that leads to happiness.
- Eastern views and conservative politics focus on the collective, while Western views and liberal politics tend to focus on the individual.
- Volunteerism increases happiness, and service learning in schools reduces dropout rates.

This is a brilliant and sweeping narrative, and well worth the read. The cross-disciplinary nature of this work reminds me of EO Wilson's seminal work, Consilience. And parts of this book remind me of one of my favorite books of contemporary philosophy: Status
Anxiety, by Alex de Bouten.

I truly loved the book.
By Brian Johnson
[[VIDEOID:9422f9c9cd9a77a3954a14d807c67011]] “Where does happiness come from? There are several different “happiness hypotheses.” One is that happiness comes from getting what you want, but we all know (and research confirms) that such happiness is short-lived. A more promising hypothesis is that happiness comes from within and cannot be obtained by making the world conform to your desires. This idea was widespread in the ancient world: Buddha in India and the Stoic philosophers in ancient Greece and Rome all counseled people to break their emotional attachments to people and events, which are always unpredictable and uncontrollable, and to cultivate instead an attitude of acceptance. This ancient idea deserves respect, and it is certainly true that changing your mind is usually a more effective response to frustration than is changing the world. However, I will present evidence that this second version of the happiness hypothesis is wrong. Recent research shows that there are some things worth striving for; there are some external conditions of life that can make you lastingly happier. One of these conditions is relatedness—the bonds we form, and need to form, with others. I’ll present research showing where love comes from, why passionate love always cools, and what kind of love is “true” love. I’ll suggest that the happiness hypothesis offered by Buddha and the Stoics should be amended: Happiness comes from within, and happiness comes from without. We need the guidance of both ancient wisdom and modern science to get the balance right.”

~ Jonathan Haidt from The Happiness Hypothesis

That’s officially the longest intro quote of any of the Notes I’ve created so far but OMG. Makes you wanna read the whole book, eh?! :)

Jonathan Haidt is a leading positive psychology researcher/professor at the University of Virginia and this book is an incredible look at ten “Great Ideas” from ancient wisdom that he brilliantly analyzes in the light of modern science while helping us apply the super practical stuff to our 21st century lives. It’s a great blend of intellectual rigor, philosophical wisdom and nuts and-bolts practicality that I highly recommend.

If this Note resonates with you, I *definitely* think you’ll love the book. I put it up there with Sonja Lyubomirsky’s How of Happiness and Tal Ben-Shahar’s Pursuit of Perfect and Happier as some must-read positive psychology goodness.

Here are some of the Big Ideas:

1. The Rider & The Elephant - Learn to ride your elephant!
2. Epiphanies - And lasting change.
3. Meditation - The magic pill.
4. Cognitive Therapy - It works.
5. Pulling the Splinter - The joy of taking responsibility.

Let’s get clear on our ultimate purpose and move toward it, lest we step in other people’s elephant poop, yo! :)

The best book I've ever read!
By HA
I loved how the author compiled knowledge from countless, often contradicting, sources and made sense out of every bit. The mere satisfaction of getting so much cited knowledge (experiments, studies, research) along with a narrative about each one's purpose and approach, made the book equally enlightening and amusing. I simply could not put it down unless I absolutely had to. It wraps you up! I wish there were more such books around...
