Ideal for Intermediate Language Learners

I teach at a language school in Fort Lauderdale. Dozxens of students each month ask me, "How can I improve my English?" I tell them, "Get a dictionary with synonyms and opposites." The Webster S and A is the best I've found -- and portable, too.
It is vital for language learners to have something interesting to pull them forward. We tend to learn by what we are interested in and in what the opposite is. "That movie was ________" (interesting, great, fantastic...not boring, not slow, not hard to understand.) We tend to think in similars and opposites, so why not use a book that is designed to give you shades of meaning as well as the opposites? I highly recommend this book and I encourage students to pick it up. What is very good in this book? There is an example sentence to show the meaning, such as:
weak, feeble frail weak is broad, like a weak muscle, a week excuse, foundation. feeble usually shows ineffectiveness or smoethign we should pity: a feeble old man, feeble joke. frail suggests an inherited weakness, that something is weak in the structure: her frail body, a frail conscience.
You see what a valuable tool this is? I urge you to recommend this book to your learners of English, even if they are native speakers.

"Master the Subtleties of Language"

The quote that makes, forms, shapes, fashions, fabricates, manufactures, forges my title comes from the back of the book:~)

"The Merriam-Webster Dictionary of Synonyms and Antonyms" is the hands down best reference book I've ever bought.

It groups synonyms together and then explains the subtle differences between them (e.g., "infer, deduce, conclude, judge, gather" are followed by definitions of each word explaining the subtle differences in their meanings -- and example of their usage in a sentence) If ever you spent five bucks on a writing reference book, this is the book to have.

My only critique is that very few nouns are ever given (most synonyms given in this book are either verbs or adjectives). And it would be helpful to see all the subtle differences between nouns like "automobile, car, sedan." I hope this helps.

This book is very nice,but may be not the best for your particular desire. If you want more detailed information and usage examples, I recommend the M-W's Dictionary of Synonyms, if you would like a convenient guide of using words, I would say M-W's Pocket Guide of Synonyms is better for you!

Dear God, I'm glad I'm not 20 anymore

A devasting prose-poem on the lack of identity that can infect one's early 20s. I loved it. Worth reading for the narrative voice alone. Also, I should mention that I had no intention of actually reading this book when I did. But glancing at the first few pages sucked me right in and then I couldn't stop. This is not a book to read for plot; it has little. But it captures and evokes an experience perfectly. As a reader in my 40s, this is a book to savor, remembering what it was like to be so unformed, and to make me damned glad I'm not 20 anymore. I could go on about other terrific qualitities of the book and the way it reflects our current society, etc., but really, you'd be better off reading it yourself (it's short) and forming your own opinion. Highly recommended. If I had to make a trite movie pitch for the book, I'd say think of it as Bridget Jones's Diary for pessimists or Catcher in the Rye for the Jersey Shore generation, one where our heroine is inarticulate and essentially vapid, but entrancing, troubling and moving nonetheless.

Kate Zambreno's Green Girl

I think that Green Girl is one of the best novels of 2011. More than that, I feel like it's a novel I have been waiting to read my whole life. I can see the influences reviewers and Zambreno herself have mentioned - Lispector, Plath, the fact that Ruth is like Cleo in Cleo from 5 to 7. I love the novel for the way it engages with the history of art and literature as well as being a novel I can see apects of my own life in - even if I'm not and never have been an American working in London at a perfume counter. It's easy to identify with Ruth and her uncertainty and coming into being. I haven't read anything quite like it and I'm so grateful for it.

Green Girl is a novel that is impossible to put down, yet will stay with you once you have read it. You devour each chapter of Ruth's story which is punctuated with quotes, from Shakespeare to Rhys and Colette, like the intertitles of a new wave film. This is entirely appropriate as Ruth, who is a Godard like ingénue, is obsessed with the glamour of film and herself lives her life as a character observed by all - the women she works with, the men she has toxic relationships with, strangers on the streets, the maternal and voyeuristic narrator, us - the readers of the book. Yet, like Varda's Cleo, Ruth longs to escape from this glare to find something, her artistry.

Green Girl is a genius, brilliant work of art. A walk with a 21st century flâneuse. I can't recommend it enough.

"You speak like a green girl

This novel takes the pedestrian idea of the interior life of the young girl and allows it to soar. The green girl is Ophelia from Hamlet, "You speak like a green girl, unsifted in such perilous circumstances. " She cannot escape from herself and is doomed to observe herself, usually mercilessly, as she searches for the form of herself in her ideal setting. She lurks ambivalently through the "glow of thingness. Everything so beautiful." It is "porn for impressionable women", women such as she.

I picked this book up after reading a critique in the flawless "Bad Feminist", and I am beholden for the reference. It is wonderful witty book that achieves what so many fail attempting: it transports the older woman to her past. It has some sting, but it is a careful sting. I winced at times, but it was a good ache from remembered pain. This is a great book.

I can't wait for the third book - I'm hooked!

I am struggling with finding eloquent words to describe how much I loved this book!!!

Unlike the previous book, I can really see myself in this character's shoes. My two most serious relationships (a marriage and an engagement) have ended with my husband/fiancé cheating on me. The hurt, the trust issues, the feelings of abandonment and betrayal, the feelings of inadequacy - all of these things are captured perfectly by Gina Drayer​. As is the knowledge that the cheater would have cheated regardless.

Don't get me wrong, it's not a dark depressing read, but Gina does a fantastic job of making you feel what her characters are feeling. Unfortunately for me, I haven't met a sexy one night stand to fix my problem, but one night stands aren't really for me. I'm covered under the final tip with my Modern Girl Choices, by the way! :-)

Can't wait for the third book!

At least I hope there is one. I want to read Megan an Peter's story! They HAVE to get together!

I really enjoyed reading this book. There were some references to the first book, but if you haven't read it yet it isn't spoiled. I really like Julia. She is a strong character who accepts her weaknesses and Simon lets her be herself, unlike her a$$ of an ex, Luke.

This really is an awesome trilogy. I assume it's a trilogy since the first two books focused on two of three friends who work together.

Author should switch to writing children's books

Really awful. Sorry, but this author writes like she's talking to children and explaining what happened at school today. Sort of like, "Simon works too hard and doesn't listen to his sister. Julia decides to sleep with Simon because she has pent up need and is not very bright." Some of this is due to the fact that the author writes in third person omniscient. ("Third person omniscient is a method of storytelling in which the narrator knows the thoughts and feelings of all of the characters in the story.") This is not a good idea for erotic romance because readers really can't place themselves in the story.
The story begins with the one-night stand in a long drawn out explanation that is designed to convince the reader that Julia is not an idiot. But, that doesn't really work. Julia's reasons for her one night stand with Simon are just plain dumb. Moreover, there is no heat. No build-up. She doesn't even seem that attracted to him. There's nothing to make readers interested in these two. What follows in the hotel room is just a giant yawn.
So that's the set up and the rest of the story is how these two end up in the same summer cottage for a week and play cat and mouse and obviously they have to fall in love and all that. Anyway, getting back in bed together takes forever while we are bored with way too many details about their professional lives and the drama of all their extended family and friends. You can skim most of this book because not much happens, especially in the bedroom. On my hot-o-meter scale of one to five (five being the hottest) I'd give this a one. And those little blurbs of "tips" to "modern girls" at the beginning of every chapter? Not funny or insightful. This author is really kidding herself.

The epic's hero, young Prince Arjuna, is torn between his duty as a warrior and his revulsion at the thought of his brothers and cousins killing each other over control of the realm. Frozen by this ethical dilemma, he debates the big questions of life and death with the supreme Hindu deity Krishna, cleverly disguised as his charioteer. By the end of the story, Eastern beliefs about mortality and reincarnation, the vision and practice of yoga, the Indian social order and its responsibilities, family loyalty, spiritual knowledge, and the loftiest pursuits of the human heart are explored in depth. Explaining the very purpose of life and existence, this classic has stood the test of twenty-three centuries. About the Author

Graham M. Schweig is the author and translator of Dance of Divine Love: The Råsa Lîlå of Krishna. After completing graduate work at the University of Chicago and Harvard University, he became associate professor of religious studies at Christopher Newport University and visiting associate professor of Sanskrit at the University of Virginia. Schweig was recently a Visiting Fellow of Hindu studies at Oxford University, and has been accepted as a Visiting Fellow at Cambridge University. He has traveled to India several times where for one year, under a Smithsonian Institution-funded grant, he researched ancient handwritten manuscripts. Since an early age, Schweig has practiced various forms of meditational and devotional yoga.

The Way of Devotion Helpfully Illuminated

Of the many translations of The Bhagavad Gita I have read this is certainly one of the best. Schweig's work with the text and in the commentaries (very inviting format and pleasant meter) is helping me to understand, for the first time, I think, the appeal of devotional (bhakti) yoga. In particular, Krishna's encouragement to be "absorbed in yoga" is continuing to intrigue me as I re-read this elegant translation.

Prayer

What do you do when the doctor tells you that you have a terminal illness? Arthur Matthews decided to write a book, at the request of his friends. Arthur had spent a lifetime serving, first in the army during WWII and then as a missionary in Asia. At one time, he, his wife, and their toddler were confined to their quarters for two years, denied basic necessities, and cut off from the Chinese people they had come to serve. During those two years they endured two systematic attempts to starve them into submission. But no matter what each day held, that evening they would make it a point to kneel down with their little girl and sing hymns of praise to God. And they prayed. Seriously. Every day.
Oddly enough, Arthur was able to apply some of the lessons he learned in WWII to the spiritual realm - he came to see wrestling in prayer as the first and foremost weapon against the enemy's attacks. After he moved to the U.S., he taught people how to pray. When he was terminally ill, his friends asked him to write those lessons down in book form and that is how Born for Battle came into being.
A companion piece to this how-to book is the biography, Green Leaf in Drought by Isobel Kuhn. Isobel's book tells the story of Arthur and Wilda Matthews struggle to survive under the communists from 1951-1953. ARthur's book shares some of the spiritual principles that God taught them during that 2 and a half year crucible.

A Classic

A book to read and reread. I've read the paper back edition several times and given them away to be a blessing to others. I finally decided just to buy one for my Kindle, so I won't be tempted to give it away can read it, or portions of it, whenever I want. This is not a book about "saying your prayers"; it's about battling "the world, the flesh, and the devil" in order to reach heaven. The Matthews family were the last missionaries out of Communist China after spending several years under house arrest. It's a wonderful encouragement to live the Christian life in earnest, not just incidentally. I can't recommend it enough.

Best book on prayer I have ever read!

This book is a 31 chapter guidebook to effective prayer with personal stories of life of spiritual warfare on the mission field by a hero of faith - one of the founders of China Inland Mission. It is not only inspiring - but lays out a plan for praying effectively and fervently. It gives a perspective on prayer that explains the power of prayer. #1 Raw Food UnCookbook that I reach for daily

Literally my favorite Raw Food Cookbook and I own many. The recipes in this book are eye opening amazing. I have already made several of the dishes such as the Markus Pizza and the Sushi and the UnChicken Tacos and they were delicious. The breakfast items and snacks are amazing and the desserts such as the cannoli with cashew cream and pink passion pie blew my mind. Salads were interesting and delicious and my favorite is Markus's spicy Thai Cabbage Salad.The recipes in this book re-create favorite comfort foods into tasty and pretty darn quick dishes. A lot of other raw food books sometimes use elaborate ingredients or crazy preparation times but this book really is into making delicious and pretty simple meals. You will have to dehydrate some of the recipes but I like how they truly tried to make everything really simple and super tasty. Also there are very unique recipes. The sushi was not made from fish but they made aloe vera taste like fish! Truly amazing. The pizza crust was also different from other Raw food books I own and absolutely delicious. I think everyone should have this book in their raw collection, it truly is a culinary work of art and fun to even flip through. There are beautiful photos of EACH DISH.

A Raw Rookie like me can make amzing mouthwatering Recipes with this book!

Great book, well worth the investment. Beautiful pictures, super easy to follow instructions, highly creative ideas and very tasty recipes. I have owned the book for only a couple weeks and so far my favorites are the Garlic Naan which is amazing! The healthy mac N cheese, also amazing. I didn't like the real potato chips but my wife likes them for dipping. I would like to see more technique described on the recipes however most of the recipes have a website listed on the page and those link you to youtube videos that show you in detail how to make whatever it is. I noticed that none of the recipes use agave or palm sugar so I emailed the Markus on Facebook and he responded within 24 hours explaining why. Truly recipes and raw ideas for any beginner!

OVERPRICED AND COMPLICATED

Not so happy with this purchase. I bought this when it was a bit higher priced after being "sold it" by the marketing genius that is Markus Rothkrantz. I do think he does some good with his productions and free content - but in hind sight - I would just stick to his free content. All the recipes he offers for free on his website are in this book, and they are the ones that are easy to make. The rest is quite convoluted and probably fine for a well-off couple who have time to cook at home, but for everyday busy people, most of it looks like a chore to produce. Which is why I've hardly produced anything. I like the easy stuff from his websites! And the gorgeous little mini movie with the berries and avocado on dehydrated seed cracker (check it out I do love the love they put into their youtube stuff!). The hardcopy book might be a delight I am sure - but living in Australia it is not an option to purchase with high shipping charges and our exchange rate and the kindle version is severely lacking in formatting to get much enjoyment out of the beautiful photos I'm sure they have gone to a lot of effort to make. If I wasn't such a poor arse I'd probably be happy to have this book as a hardcopy on my shelf to dally in occasionally, but being a single mum I'm somewhat begrudged of the hard-earned dollars I paid for this underwhelming edition. I'm much happier with hardcopy books I've paid less for :)
