Greg Little's Rise Above--an excellent read

Dr. Greg Little has recreated the lost world (for many of us)of junior and senior high. Then he carries straight through to adulthood in a smooth transition. Read his book and discover his secrets for surviving the jungle called "life." This is a compassionate book of struggle and the overcoming of terrible adversity. A truly great read.

Greg Little's RISE ABOVE Is Something All Of Us Can Strive For

Author Greg Little has revealed his own life experiences in RISE ABOVE (Conquering Adversities) as a way of showcasing how all of us can overcome that which might keep us from our own personal greatness--and I'm glad that he did. In this one book we see how he is able to deal with challenges in his life and even the loss of a child and not give up on living and discovering what his purpose is.

When you look at what he has been through, it would have been easy for some to just give up and give in to the troubles we faced. Little forged ahead, at times using what might have stopped him as motivation to keep pushing forward. What a great example for all of us! No matter how dire situations might seem, there is always a way out if we don't give up. For Little he saw that his moving forward was not just good for him but inspired others along the way.

The lesson? We never know how what we do and the way we handle situations will encourage others in their own lives. For this reason alone RISE ABOVE should be a book that you read and appreciate, understanding how quickly any of our circumstances can change.

Having known Greg since 1976, I have learned much more about him in reading Rise Above: Conquering Adversities. Greg has devoted many years providing positive counseling and group activities designed to help each member support and help the whole, resulting in each participate gaining strength from all within a group, even if for only one seminar. His book helps readers better understand adversities of others that in turn, helps all readers face their own. Readers will be justly rewarded by reading Rise Above and may well learn more about themselves.

About the Author

Terry R. Myers is a Chicago- and Los Angeles-based writer, educator, and independent curator. A regular contributor since 1988 to numerous international journals, including Art Review, The Brooklyn Rail, Parkett, and Modern Painters, he is the author of Mary Heilmann: Save the Last Dance for Me (Afterall Books, 2007). He is Associate Professor of Painting and Drawing at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

A book to chew or gnaw on for a while... Better than most!

There's enough painting and painters going on now globally to turn one's head inside out. And this is (one) of the good collections of commentary on some of it; 'the words to the paint', if you will. It's probably better than most books out there that promise good discussion 'on painting'. So, if that's your thing, I recommend it. Do keep in mind, the mix of essays ranges evenly from 1981~2009.

But, said ~30 years of discourse in one book naturally makes for a random/narrow, commercial/avante-guarde, didactic/speculative, confusing/convenient, heavy/light, etc/etc...all pretty consistent with today's painting going on. It's not to be read cover to cover, (mine stays near the tub,) and several of the essays are on the scholarly/ hard-to-decipher side. The essays date from 1981-2009 and include interviews, writings, criticisms, etc from well known (painters, critics, philosophers, hists, etc), to names you'll have to look up, if so inclined. There's 'mourning the death of painting', markets/capitalism/gallerism, Women in ptg., on China (Dafen), modern public/audience considerations, historical considerations, etc. Painters discussed or their writings, and some of the critics/writers include: Richter, Chuck Close, Dumas, Oehlen & Butzer, Jim Shaw, Storr, Philip Taaffe, B Milhazes, Tuymans, Curin, Mira Schor,... Deleuze, Groos, Collings &Alpers, Jerry Saltz, Storr, etcetc ... Thats only a few, random names...there's no shortage of subjects (size or range)...Easily more of these collections 'on PAINTING' could be similarly published with the 1000's of similar writings out there. Some of the best contemporary thought and musing is in this book but a lot is probably missing...
There's also a lot of rehash and old thought and popular themes, some cool interviews (the artists it seems are just as bewildered - and admit it.)

If you are mainly an art-painting-lover who likes to look at paintings (NO illustrations in this book), go look and buy and continue to love paintings, you dont NEED this book (unless thats your idea of fun).

If you are a painter, go to the studio and paint, dont bother or get too bogged down by such ramblings as these. That's THEIR job, to write and theorize. You dont NEED this book (unless thats your idea of fun...probably is.)

If you're curator, critic, gallerist, historian, philosopher, intellectual etcetc., don't wait another moment, buy a copy to gorge on.

contemporary thoughts on painting

I was hoping this had more artists that are hard core painters and not the typical famous artists and their view on painting. But the essays are interesting. Painting is returning as an area of focus and I was hoping this documented this new interest.

Read it, but don't expect any major revelations.

Every 30 pages I encountered a paragraph that reminded me why I was reading the book. That's basically summarizes my thoughts about all of the Documents of Contemporary Art series. Read it, but don't expect any major revelations. And don't be afraid to skip ahead when you get bored.

The Postman Always Rings Twice

This story is about the triangle between an unhappy wife, her older husband, and a hired drifter. It tells how diner owner Nick Papadakis hires Frank Chambers because his hired help won’t stay with him. Frank sees Cora, Nick’s wife (Chapter 1). There is a fatal attraction (Chapter 2). [Did the other hire help leave quickly to avoid this setup?] Cora won a beauty contest in Des Moines and got a trip to Hollywood; but her pride kept her from going back home. [The beauty contest racket brought hopefuls to Hollywood who lacked money, connections, and acting experience.] Cora married the first honest man she found. But now she is unhappy and in love with Frank (the first who stayed?). They are now planning to murder Nick (Chapter 4).They consider running off together, but its not practical; Cora would return to the life she left. A new crisis for Cora leads to a new plot (Chapter 6).

They have a fatal accident on the mountain road to Malibu Beach. Their car goes off the road and down the cliff. Nick dies in the ambulance, Frank is badly injured with a broken arm. Cora escaped the falling car. The police and an ambulance take them away. After the Inquest District Attorney Sackett questions Frank, and gets him to sign a statement. Sackett suspects murder (Chapter 9). The best lawyer in town will defend Cora against murder; Katz will handle everything. Nick’s insurance policy is the alleged motive. There is a shocking surprise plea (Chapter 10). Katz says this is the greatest case in his life, then explains how he will argue in court from the insurance policies (Chapter 11). [This technical detail is simplified in the film.] The rest of the story plays out. The differences in personalities between Cora and Frank result in growing conflicts. After one critical argument they resolve their differences. But an accident brings up the past, and their fate is sealed. [This story is told from Frank’s point of view and seems self-serving to me.]
