A bit disapointing

I bought vol 1 and vol 2 without the CDs a while ago and would give them both five stars. I only bought vol 2 again for the CD. There are lots of pieces of music in the book that are not on the CD, . When I first listened to the CD I thought it sounded like a synthesizer, I've bought quite a few guitar books with CDs and this is the first that sounds artificial, the last few tracks do sound better but it's a lifeless sound, not inspiring by any means. In the repertoire part of the book, which is more than half of the book, there are only three of the pieces on the CD. Quite a disapointment.

Patience and perseverance.

What I like in this manual is the fact that it really goes step by step which allow you to build a sound guitar technique. This allows you to learn the right moves for both left and right hand. There are a lot of this exercises. Maybe they look a little boring but believe me, they are essential for your progress.

There are several pages about different guitar techniques like sound production, music history, composers for guitar, performance notes, advanced bar techniques, special effects, slur technique, performance anxiety (!), etc.. There are many black and white pictures illustrating the text.

An audio CD is included in this special edition. You can consider this CD as your personal teacher who lets you hear how the music should be played. Though sometimes Christpher Parkening encourages you to play a personal interpretation.

Conversely, the Islamic Republic implemented policies that unwittingly transformed the ways in which the bazaar operated, thus undermining its capacity for political mobilisation. Arang Keshavarizian's book affords unusual insights into the politics, economics and society of Iran across four decades.

Bazaars Made the Revolution and the Revolution Killed Them

At the time of Iran's 1979 Islamic Revolution, as Patrick Clawson of the
Washington Institute for Near East Policy tells us, two-thirds of Iran's wholesale trade and at least 30 percent of imports were transacted through Tehran's bazaar merchants. The merchandise did not necessarily physically pass through the bazaar, but the bazaaris controlled the trade. The bazaar was the national commercial emporium for the import of almost all consumer goods and for many intermediate goods used as inputs in manufacturing. The bazaar was also an important public forum; the exchange of information that took place as part of the hustle and bustle of trade was arguably the most important conduit for news for the key opinion-shapers in society. And the bazaar merchants were a powerhouse in Iranian politics through their financial and political support for traditional clerics. It is little exaggeration to say that the bazaar made the revolution.

Based on many interviews in the bazaar as well as extensive research in original sources, Keshavarzian, assistant professor of government at Connecticut College, documents how the power of the pre-revolution bazaar was a product of the shah's modernizing and development approach that, paradoxically, had been intended to undercut the bazaar. The state's new, formal structures allowed little room for the social networks and personal contacts that defined bazaar culture; since such interpersonal relations were central to how Iranians approached business, the bazaar's power was magnified.

To continue the paradox, today the Islamic Revolution has undercut the strength of the bazaar despite being sympathetic to bazaar merchants. Every aspect of life under the Islamic Republic is based on individual-level patronage, not on formal structures. The bazaar cannot compete in influence with the network of social relations formed through ties to influential clerics and to revolutionary institutions, such as the foundations that control much of the Islamic Republic's economy. Meanwhile, patronage via the revolutionary elite has exposed and inflamed internal divisions in the bazaar, undercutting group solidarity.

As a result, the Islamic Republic has--without at all intending to do so--succeeded at forcing the transformation the shah desired but could not accomplish. Today the modernization of the bazaar has been accomplished through the imposition of contemporary transaction methods: contractually based exchanges, arm's-length exchanges, standardized goods, and fixed prices. The bazaar merchant's reputation is no longer the key to his business success. And the bazaar no longer maintains the kind of internal cohesion necessary to mobilize the business community for political ends. So much so, Keshavarzian convincingly shows, that Tehran's bazaar is no longer an important political force.

About the Author

About the Author
Charles Roth is Professor Emeritus in Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin, where he taught Digital Design for more than four decades. In addition to co-authoring DIGITAL SYSTEMS DESIGN USING VHDL, Dr. Roth has authored the successful FUNDAMENTALS OF LOGIC DESIGN and co-authored DIGITAL SYSTEMS DESIGN USING VERILOG.

Larry L. Kinney is a Professor and Director of Undergraduate Studies at the University of Minnesota. He received his Ph.D in Electrical Engineering from the University of Iowa in 1968. His research concerns digital system and digital computer design, specifically concurrent error detection techniques, testing of logic and design, distributed computer systems, computer architectures, error detecting/correcting codes, and applications of microprocessors.

I HATE THIS BOOK!!!!!

Yay! You're going to be an engineer, congrats! Now if your professor wants you to use this textbook for homework, expect endless nights of tears and suffering because this book expects you to know what you need to know without knowing what you don't know. This book was literally a punishment for choosing the engineering field because, unless you are taught well and then use this book, it will be useless. For example, if you have an assignment with several questions from this book, and you don't understand how to do them, the book will typically make it worse and make you rethink your major choice. I hate my professor for making me utilize this book and I feel like this should not be a text book, it should be more like a reference for you after you get your degree.

I feel I'm dumb when I read it...

...then I google the subject and read/watch something much easier to understand. Unfortunately, this is a required textbook for my Modern Digital Systems Design class, but I find it really hard to follow the sentences and the paragraphs. I thought the fault was on me, but I remember enjoying very much reading through Linear Algebra, Calculus, and Differential Equations textbooks. This textbook, however, is painstakingly difficult to read - event though some stuff is pretty straighforward to understand, as I said before, once when you look it up on other sources.

About the Author
David C. Funder is Distinguished Professor of Psychology and former chair of the department at the University of California, Riverside. Winner of the 2009 Jack Block Award for Distinguished Research in Personality, he is a former editor of the Journal of Research in Personality, and a past president of the Association for Research in Personality as well as the Society for Personality and Social Psychology. He is best known for his research on personality judgment and has also published research on delay of gratification, attribution theory, the longitudinal course of personality development, and the psychological assessment of situations. He has taught personality psychology to undergraduates at Harvey Mudd College, Harvard University, and the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, and continues to teach the course every year at the University of California, Riverside.

Pretty Good Intro to Personality Psych

I had to buy this for my online Personality Psychology and I found this book to be very enjoyable. The chapters are long and it does have a lot of examples with additions of the author's experiences/opinions. Sometimes it could be summarized better but the end of the chapter summaries do a good job without losing too much. I feel I am learning a lot from this book and am doing very well in the class so I would say the book is pretty good. Its not boring or dry but If you dislike a relaxed feel you might not like this book because the author does talk to you a bit.

I actively avoid reading this rubbish

I loathe this textbook. I am currently taking Personality Psych right now and the author is impossible to read for several reasons:
1) it's impossible to study for tests using this book. The author tends to ramble on and on, using his own experiences and subjective opinions that I want to know nothing about. Concrete facts would be more helpful for students who are trying to learn the actual science of personality.
2) The author's writing style simply makes me angry the further and further I read. He is snarky at times, to the point of trying to be the reader's "friend" rather than being an objective book used to learn. His voice is annoying and it's like pulling teeth for me to try and read. I actively avoid it.
3) His subjectivity makes the book extremely muddled, disorganized, and at times inaccurate.

Overall, I don't recommend this book at all. It's horrible.

Funder's original Personality Puzzle was great and it keeps getting better. I would use this book for Personality 101 or a graduate seminar and both audiences would find it very worthwhile. He has good content, he is lucid, has a sense of humor and thinks practically. Hard to find those in one author.

A thorough, well-written and inspiring guide to TV writing

This is an incredibly detailed and well written book about the process of putting your TV Pilot together. There hasn't been anything like it on the market yet and really fills the gap of how to navigate your TV writing aspirations. It feels modern and addresses the current TV Show landscape perfectly. It's also inspiring and positive, making you WANT to go out, research and write. Highly recommend.

This is a great read and a very useful tool for anyone looking to put together a television series. It provides a thorough and understandable roadmap to take you from initial concept to a pitch ready series package.

Don't spend tens of thousands of dollars going to film school, read this book instead.

Kam Miller's book is the definitive text on how to write a TV Pilot and arc your series. This isn't a quick book of shortcuts. This is an in-depth guide that leads you through the steps of LEARNING how to write a relevant, character driven television series. Ms. Miller has no doubt spent countless hours breaking down current shows and laying them out in a way that makes them accessible to writers creating their own series. Each chapter has a very clear exercise at the end. These exercises help you build your world and create your arcs for the story you want to tell. The format of this book is about giving you the tools that you need as a writer to make your show. Along the way, exercises are EXACTLY THE SAME as what would be asked of you as a professional writer in a writer's room or developing a show for producers or a network. It's hard work, but if you really want to write a show that has a shot of getting made or have a writing sample that will be noticed, use this book.
