Jason Cox

Jason Cox has enjoyed capturing images since receiving his first Mickey-Matic film camera when he was four years old. Growing up in the Washington, D.C. area, he spent much of his youth wandering around with some form of a camera, still or video, in hand.

Jason graduated from Penn State with degrees in film production and English. After spending a couple of years as an entertainment journalist for a newspaper, Jason returned to D.C. to strike out on his own, eventually starting up his own L.L.C., Some Might Say Media. He currently juggles a mixed workload of freelance video production and editing, as well as teaching courses as a certified trainer for both Apple and Adobe software.

Outside of his working life, Jason enjoys traveling (he met his Scottish wife in New Zealand—long story!), playing old school Nintendo games, going to music and cultural events, and drinking chocolate milk.

this is an excellent for a beginner but not for an advanced student

I had hoped to learn new techniqes for creating different type of projects in the process of making different projects. Instead, its very good at explaining all the necessary techiques for a beginner to throrougly learn the program. Unfortunately, it came out just before the 10.0.6 update, but still is a worthy addition to learn the program. I'd recommend it for anyone that wants a step by step way of learning all parts of the program. But not for someone that thinks they are going to put different projects together and learn new creative techniques.

Great book!

I've not used a NLE system other than PremierePro. Everything I knew about PP and everything so far that I've learned about FCP X has been through either trial and error or looking at a tutorial or guidebook like this.

Unlike a lot of books that assume you already know everything there is to know about the program and then tell you how to do it anyway, this book assumes nothing. The index and the table of contents along with chapter names actually help guide you to exactly what it is you're looking for.

Perfect for a self-taught novice to amateur or beyond.

harder than audio editing ?

This Final Cut Pro X contains much that you need for video editing. Cox reminds the reader up front that this is a harder task than digital audio editing. You can immediately appreciate that video has much more data, and in general will also encapsulate an audio stream. Hence video editing is a super set of audio editing. But you can see from the text that simply importing video data into Final Cut is no small matter. For historical reasons there are many (>12) file formats that video could be stored in. The bulk of the first chapter deals with this topic. Luckily, effort has gone into making this as seamless as possible.

Much of the text is about low level editing mechanics, for altering both the video and audio streams. It turns out that practice will still be needed by many users. While as much has been automated as possible, certain tasks are still initiated by the user. Amongst these is the placing of markers manually, in beat to a music track. Most users will need to do and redo these placings. It is somewhat unclear if this situation can be improved in future versions because ultimately the decision is with the user.

There is one chapter on audio editing. While easy to understand, if you are into serious audio editing, you should probably use a program devoted to that, and then import the result into Final Cut.

A nice aspect of Final Cut is the aids it offers for doing special effects. Or aside from those, the means to clean up existing video. A good instance is being able to stabilise a shaky shot, which I suspect is a very common problem with amateur video. The smoothing operations within Final Cut seem to use some very complex algorithms under the bonnet. These can take some time to process, depending on the power of your machine and the complexity of the images in the video.

humbling

Read the book. Be prepared to be humbled. The author is a Mormon and he uses scriptural references in his writings, but they all make sense, don't let it deter you if you are not Mormon, you will still get good advise from this book. I am still wrapping my mind around the concept that we are all so damn critical and the damage it does to others and to ourselves... I hope to use the concepts taught in this book to have a better relationship with my kids and their families and my spouse. I hope I am not too old to learn...

I agree, if you collect older pop culture books, you'll love this. I was about 6 when this thing came out, and maybe 10 when I snuck iinto my brothers' room to rifle through their things and found this. Even then I knew this book was silly. Hard to believe it was written by a doctor! Example, a couple goes to the doc because they cannot get pregnant. He asks what sort of contraception they use. "What are contraceptives?" the couple asks. Boom! Right away the doc has the answer! He realizes the man has been (trying to keep it clean here) "putting it in the wrong place." How did doc come up with THAT conclusion from a seemingly infertile couple by asking only one question? Just because the people don't know what contraceptives are doesn't mean they have never used them anyway! Were people really that stupid back in the 60s? Also, this was before abortion was legal, so the stories about dead women in bathrooms (from what I remember) scared the heck out of me. Now that I'm 43 and know a lot more I might pick up another copy to have even more laughs.

Interesting info... but somewhat prejudiced

Dr. Reuben's book is an update of his classic bestseller, and the reviews mentioning the previous edition make me happy to have grown up in a later generation that speaks about sex more openly.
The author's views have progressed somewhat since the earlier edition, but if you would like an unbiased view of sexuality, this is not the book to buy. For one, there is an anti-gay tone to all of the information on gay sex and culture. I am a 30+ hetero woman and I cringed at some of what was written here. I don't think authors should cater to a politically correct audience, but I was surprised that this came from a medical doctor with a specialty in psychiatry! At another point in the book, he talks about the IUD method of birth control almost as if it is responsible for sexually transmitted diseases. As far as I know, many women successfully use this as their birth control method...seems strange?! All in all, a fun read if you are interested in popular culture. But --especially for young readers-- there are much better books on the subject.

Mark Lane is an author, lawyer and activist. His was the first voice to publicly question the top secret investigation into the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, and his bestselling book, Rush to Judgment, was one of the first to question the Warren Commission's conclusion that Lee Harvey Oswald was the lone assassin. A Citizen's Dissent recounts the vast efforts of our government and the establishment media to suppress his investigation into the assassination of JFK and to silence and destroy him for his work. His later works on the JFK assassination detailed the involvement of the CIA through an actual trial in which Lane cross-examined multiple agents [Plausible Denial] and the role played by the CIA and Secret Service [Last Word]. He crossed the country speaking at countless colleges and other institutions about the murder of the president sparking the creation of the House Select Committee on Assassinations, which looked into the assassinations of Kennedy and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. A Freedom Rider while he served in the New York Legislature in 1961, he has defended the rights of the voiceless from his beginnings in East Harlem to Wounded Knee, where he successfully defended the leaders of the American Indian Movement. He freed James Joseph Richardson, a black man framed in rural Florida for the murder of his own seven children, from prison after serving over 20 years, many of them on death row [Arcadia]. As it is a particular field of interest to me, I have probably read more about the trilogy of 1960's assassinations than most. Most conspiracy theories, however, involve a certain suspension of disbelief, and the reader, as investigator, must decide what they believe or not. Not so in Mark Lane and Dick Gregory's Murder in Memphis; without pointedly trying to be, their simple stating of the facts is the single most damning, disturbing, and convincing indictment of the FBI and others involved that I have ever read. Brilliantly written, the book is also meticulously researched; every source used is clearly identified and the reader gets the impression they could independently verify every statement made with relative ease. A non-stop page-turner from beginning to end; it is a must read for anyone who enjoys non-fiction.

Republished in the 1990's by Mark Lane and Dick Gregory as "Murder in Memphis," this book blows the dust off of another chapter in American Mythology - that James Earl Ray assassinated Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr in Memphis on April 4, 1968. While this is still mind-bogglingly accepted by most citizens today, few understand that as a result of Mark Lane's efforts, Dr. King's family came to the conclusion that it was not Ray that killed one of the most prominent leaders of the American 20th century. Rather, they understand it to be the result of a conspiracy involving government agents and other clandestine groups.

Lane spells out the facts from the case, setting up an excellent defense for Ray. This supposed assassin was on the run as a fugitive after escaping from prison in Missouri. As such, he wound up in Canada, and in order to make money he put himself in the services of anyone that needed odd jobs performed. Ray subsequently got involved with a man he calls "Raoul," who put him on the payroll and had him do several jobs like smuggling drugs across the border, etc. After a while, Ray ended up in Memphis, unwittingly being cast as a dupe in a grand scheme to kill Dr. King. Lane effectively shows how witnesses were intimidated into giving false information or retracting their stories. The author also painstakingly details how the State's case against Ray was feeble, and would have been blown apart in court had Ray not been squeezed into entering a plea of guilty.

Four stars, not 5, due to the chapters from Dick Gregory. If this book is ever reprinted, Gregory's part could be condensed into one or two chapters. He gives some interesting anecdotal information, such as that Ralph Abernathy called Dr. King by his given name, Michael; as well as little snippets of instances when the FBI would come to a black family's house after receiving a complaint about harassment, and simply warm their hands in the burning crosses before taking fingerprints of the victims and then going along their way. However, when he includes things like mentioning the TV show "Lassie" received a lot of hate mail from black folks because of its star dog being given a lot of screen time when dogs were being used to maul civil rights protesters, the reader might just roll their eyes. I have a feeling that these parts were inserted to take up space and fill the book out.

Regardless, this book is highly recommended. The killing of Dr. King is the kind of event that future generations and historians will look at and wonder in awe at the gullibility of the American people and the effectiveness of the "memory hole." Would that copies of this book, and others like Dr. William Pepper's Orders to Kill: The Truth Behind the Murder of Martin Luther King, Jr. (Warner Books) be distributed to every citizen that visits Dr. King's Memorial in DC.

Not as good as orders to kill

This is a fairly good book but nothing like Orders to Kill by William Pepper which is much more detailed and conclusive in it's arguments. Thinking about it I guess these guys probably re-released to cash in on the time, effort and money that Pepper spent on the the case. Still it is much better than Posner so...
