Good reference, but not a good teaching book

This book is a good reference for the Discrete Cosine Transform. The mathematics is only moderately difficult, and should provide little difficulty for a talented engineer graduate, say.

And yet I can't give this book a great review. It's all rather clinical, with little attempt to provide overview or insight. One just doesn't come away terribly enlightened.

The main reason provided as to why the DCT might be better than the DFT in some instances is that it is a more compact encoder of Markov sequences. Great, but what does this mean in practise? Well, the authors give many applications, but they are dealt with briefly, with little insight, and in a encyclopedic manner. Better would have been a few simple applications, done in more detail, where the authors made crystal clear why the DCT is the tool for the job.

I was hoping to come away with an in-depth understanding as to the properties of the DCT, where it's best applied, and why. I was disappointed.

This book is so far the most complete reference of the transform "discrete cosine transform". We can see the author's time and effort by only looking at the reference section (more then 200+ references). This book outlines different algorithms for computing 1D, 2D DCT, IDCT, some includings FORTRAN codes. Without this book, collecting all the existing journals about DCT will probably takes several months. This book is good for novices about DCT, as well as good for experts.

Great book, a must read companion to The End series

Rarely does a spinoff rival or exceed the original story in depth, quality, or attitude, but this is that exception. If anything, I enjoyed it more than the original series, and though it's tough to read a book where you know the ending, it was written in such a way that it was fresh "and I didn't see it coming"!
The central character is Lexi and Hopf did an exceptional job in her character development and she is anything but static, my original perception of her from the series. I originally saw her as a "snapshot", static by that time and through that lens. In this book, we see her morph out of operational necessity into who she "became", though there were some transformations, surprisingly, beyond that. There are also some explanations for what was originally portrayed as obsessions, which turned out to be something entirely different. (No spoilers here).
As a male who has been to 35 different countries and seen life, survival, and "humanity" (a word used inversely for what it actually is, "inhumanity"), I find the book accurate for a SoCal female placed in post-apocalyptic suburbia. I also see that feminazies might argue the reality of it all, though I'm sure they will find some solace that she does remorselessly kill a few men.
The irony of her upbringing is not lost, or shouldn't be on those with similar experiences. "When life gives you lemons, reload your AR!"
Great book, the ending gave me... A warm and emotional feeling inside.

This is an outstanding post-apocalyptic tale by master storyteller G. Michael Hopf. As a huge fan of The New World series, I was excited to see him expand on Lexi's character. It is the start of another great series that will not disappoint!

This book starts as a backstory to the life of Lexi (introduced in The New World series: Book #2) and it opened my eyes to a character that seemed a bit of a mystery. So many critical situations and tragedy that I hadn't even imagined! Before the Event, Lexi was a completely different person than the one introduced in The New World series. Her relationship with her sister and others, her way of thinking in extreme situations, even her way of dressing was so different! This was a thrilling book with very specific and clear changes that emerged due to Lexi's life experiences. Mr. Hopf has created the beginning of a fascinating new trilogy and I can't wait for more!

Great third book!!!

Great third book! I admit I only glanced at the beginning of the second book and never finished it because it didn't grab my attention like the first book. This one is reminiscent of the first book, in a good way. Gypsy's character development was believable and surprisingly sophisticated yet easy enough for the target audience (middle school readers) to understand. I also appreciated all of the secondary characters - I felt connected to all of them, even the ones who only make a brief appearance. It is impressive that the author is able to create such great characters and develop the relationships so deeply in a relatively short book. I took off one star only because it was a bit predictable and certain parts seemed a little too similar to the first book, but otherwise a fun read!

Good book for young readers

Another great book for students to enjoy. It makes me just a little sad that I am no longer a school librarian so I could present this book to my kids. I know they would love it. This is the kind of book that helps to create life long readers. The story is interesting and a bit unusual. I enjoyed reading it and will do my best to share it with some young readers. I liked the magic aspects of the book very much. This book absolutely belongs in a school library and the children's section of public libraries. It is really good.

Maci and Zoe's Review: A sweet coming of age story

A long time ago I read the beginning of this trilogy, Savvy and Scumble. I was happy to see that there was another one, even though it had been quite a few years in-between. In that time, I felt I had grown out of the age appropriate level for this book, but I could not help reading it, because I remembered how much I liked Savvy. Gypsy has an unusual family, where everybody gets a savvy, a special power, on their thirteenth birthday. But what Gypsy got is not what she had hoped for, and as things get even worse, such as having her grumpy grandma move in with them, things end up switched. As everything that happens starts developing in uncharted territories, even Gypsy's parents cannot help. I found this book to be a sweet coming of age story, it is definitely for someone younger then me. One thing that I did not like about this book was how stressful it was to read. It was one of those books where the characters spend the whole time trying to prevent something, which can be very stressful and frustrating for the reader. Overall, I give this book four stars because it book is good, it just is not great.

Chinese workers in the third century b.c. created seven thousand life-sized terracotta soldiers to guard the tomb of the First Emperor. In the eleventh century a.d., Chinese builders constructed a pagoda from as many as thirty thousand separately carved wooden pieces. In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, China exported more than a hundred million pieces of porcelain to the West. As these examples show, the Chinese throughout history have produced works of art in astonishing quantities--and have done so without sacrificing quality, affordability, or speed of manufacture. How have they managed this? Lothar Ledderose takes us on a remarkable tour of Chinese art and culture to explain how artists used complex systems of mass production to assemble extraordinary objects from standardized parts or modules. As he reveals, these systems have deep roots in Chinese thought--in the idea that the universe consists of ten thousand categories of things, for example--and reflect characteristically Chinese modes of social organization.

Ledderose begins with the modular system par excellence: Chinese script, an ancient system of fifty thousand characters produced from a repertoire of only about two hundred components. He shows how Chinese artists used related modular systems to create ritual bronzes, to produce the First Emperor's terracotta army, and to develop the world's first printing systems. He explores the dazzling variety of lacquerware and porcelain that the West found so seductive, and examines how works as diverse as imperial palaces and paintings of hell relied on elegant variation of standardized components. Ledderose explains that Chinese artists, unlike their Western counterparts, did not seek to reproduce individual objects of nature faithfully, but sought instead to mimic nature's ability to produce limitless numbers of objects. He shows as well how modular patterns of thought run through Chinese ideas about personal freedom, China's culture of bureaucracy, Chinese religion, and even the organization of Chinese restaurants.

About the Author
Lothar Ledderose holds the chair of East Asian Art at the University of Heidelberg. He is an internationally renowned scholar of Chinese art and calligraphy. He has curated numerous exhibitions on Asian art including Treasures from the Forbidden City (Berlin, Vienna, 1985), The Terracotta Army (Dortmund 1991), Japan and Europe (Berlin 1993), and an exhibition of Chinese painting of the Ming and Qing dynasties (Baden-Baden 1985). His books include Mt Fu and the Classical Tradition of Chinese Colligraphy (Princeton) and Felsen and Orchideen.

An indispensable insight into Chinese thought

This is one of the clearest and most insightful examinations of ancient Chinese aesthetics and related philosophical and philogical materials that has been produced in the English language. We owe Prof. Ledderose a great debt of gratitude for having taken the care to lay out in such a readable volume the gist of a pragmatic approach to the creation of art and artifact that came to predominate throughout thousands of years of Chinese culture. His examination of the modular construction of the Chinese written language is compelling. The book should be required reading for students of any and all disciplines that begin with the phrase "traditional Chinese", be they students of medicine, martial arts, meditation, music, painting, or any other of a long list of subjects that have been influenced by the approach to thought and logic that is revealed in its pages.

showcases millennia of Chinese art

To a reader not from China, Ledderose gives an eloquent and graceful exposition of thousands of years of Chinese art. Within this, he considers Chinese script to be an intrinsic art form. Millennia ago, China made this decisive choice for the written form of their language. Whereas in the Middle East and thence in Europe, alphabets were the other preference. Each has its advantages and disadvantages. The main disadvantage of the script is that each symbol must be memorised for its meaning and pronunciation. But by decoupling a symbol from its sound, Chinese scripts from centuries or millennia ago can still be mostly correctly read. Ledderose makes the point that as pronunciations change, or political boundaries change, alphabet-based writings tend to undergo changes. Hence the fracturing of Latin into the various European languages after the Roman empire fell. These are good points that Ledderose makes. Though he also acknowledges that alphabets are far easier for the user to learn.

Most of the book describes other art forms in China. Accompanied by many photos, including several in colour, that illustrate examples of these forms. Examples shown date back to the Bronze Age, as in seals used by nobles. Even then, the artistry was intricate and meticulous.

Interesting book

Emily doesn't know what hit her. One day, she believes that she has a perfect life - a wonderful, caring doctor husband who adores her, a baby on the way, and a comfortable, financially-secure lifestyle. The next day, her life literally goes up in flames - she discovers that her "devoted husband" really had a mistress on the side and had died in her arms from smoke inhalation, her life isn't so financially secure thanks to her husband's reckless spending, and everything she had ever hoped for is gone. The only small comfort in her life is the child she is expecting, her own little miracle baby.
Dillon, Emily's brother-in-law, is determined to take care of his brother's wife, despite having kept her at a distance for the seven years of her marriage. Emily does not know that her handsome, brooding brother-in-law has been in love with her since he first met her. Emily also does not know that it isn't her husband's child she is carrying, after all - but Dillon's child. Can Dillon win Emily's heart after finally given the opportunity, or will the secrets he keeps tear them apart before they can begin?
I really enjoyed this story. Dillon was a great hero - strong, intense, and fiercely devoted to Emily and the baby. Emily was also a great heroine for him - she too had a strong character, which was obvious when she kept going even after the fullness of her husband's betrayals became known to her. Some of the secondary characters (particularly Adele, Emily's mother-in-law) were one-dimensional and could have been fleshed out a little more, but that's not a major flaw in the story line or anything like that. Dillon and Emily's relationship progressed over time and seemed completely natural, almost like this could really happen in real life :) So if you want to spend a few hours with a pleasant, heart-warming read, pick up this book! :)

Truly Romantic

Yes, I know this is a Silhouette book but its a great read!

Emily McGuire's husband, prominent doctor Keith McGuire is dead, he was in a fire, in bed with his mistress - in the house he kept for her. Emily has just learned that after years of trying she is finally pregnant and now its all over and her world is in shambles. She had no idea that he was cheating. After going through the funeral and all the gossip, she's ready to start her life over but she needs a job and she doesn't know what to do next. She's never been close to the rest of Keith's family, her mother is dead and she has no other family.

Dillion, Keith's brother has never been friendly to Emily, she feels that he doesn't like her and she's never comfortable with him but after the funeral Dillion steps in and handles all the details - he wants her to rely on him but since she won't he offers her a job and helps her get an apartment (nothing is left after all the bills are paid). After Emily determines that the offer of a job is not a move to give her money for doing nothing she and Dillion become friends. But there are still secrets that need to be told and confessions that need to be made.

I love Ginna Gray books, her later books are very good but these have great story lines and the content is wonderful. When you're in the mood for a hea without too much hassle or drama, this is what I like to read and yes, it does deserve a 5 based on what it is and who wrote it. The best of Silhouette!

Hero fell in love with heroine 1st but his brother married her instead **SPOILERS**

Pregnant heroine accepts the job offer of her recently-deceased husband's brother. She's always felt uncomfortable around him but she has no choice but to accept his job offer due to the huge debts her cheating husband incurred without her knowledge. Hero fell in love with her since they first met 7 years ago but his brother wooed her first. He hid his love for her by being aloof around her but now that she's single, in need, and pregnant with his baby without her knowledge he is compelled to help her as much as she allows him. Heroine warms up to him as she gets to know him in the next few months. His sudden marriage proposal makes her unsure if his motives are solely because of the baby or if she has a chance to be loved by him.

What I liked most about this book was the sensitivity & realism Gray gave to the development of heroine's love for Hero. It took her months to reconcile herself with the true nature of her cheating husband and to fall in love with Hero. But in the meantime the build-up of heroine's emotions & sexual awareness of Hero became more intense. Hero's perseverance towards supporting her & hopefully making her love him as a result was touching. Hero wasn't celibate during the 7 years he was pining for her but when she became a widow the other women who visited him were no longer appealing. He stayed celibate during the 11 months he waited for her to reciprocate his attraction.

Hero was quiet, aloof & dominant in general but he showed his sensitivity, caring, & patience by the things he did for heroine. I loved how his assistant-cum-2nd-mother revealed to heroine at the end that Hero kept a picture of her in his desk while she was still married. He acted like he didn't care for her but inside he was a hotbed of deep, pining love for heroine. I understood his reasons for constantly delaying his confession that he was the sperm donor of her baby. He had integrity but his fear of losing her superceded it. I wished the ending was just a tad longer with Hero & heroine discussing Hero's reasons for keeping his secret for her & for more sex scenes.
