A very fresh romance

In Shelter Valley, Arizona Rebecca and Will Parsons live a happy loving life together. Perhaps, the only regret shared by the duo after two decades of bliss is that they never had a child regardless of the fact that they both wanted one and kept trying. However, over time both accepts the obvious that no child is forthcoming. The barren scenario abruptly ends when at forty-two years old Rebecca becomes pregnant.

Suddenly, the idyllic world of Becca and Will is thrown into chaos. Goals were changed when it became obvious that Becca would never become pregnant. The elated Will, the president of Montford University, is as stunned as Becca is. However, Becca, who anticipated menopause, feels too old to start with the diaper brigade even as the townsfolk rally to help one of the kindest residents adjust.

BECCA'S BABY is a warm humanistic tale that takes the audience inside the head and heart of the title character. The secondary cast including Will augments the tale through their interactions with Becca. However, Becca will charm the audience as she psychologically and emotionally struggles with a radically unexpected change. She owns this novel. Tara Taylor Quinn provides a robust character study that may seem "un" romantic at first glimpse but remains worth reading by anyone who enjoys a fabulous look at the human psyche.

Quinn has done better.

Becca’s Baby is the first book in the Shelter Valley Stories series by American author, Tara Taylor Quinn. After years of trying, when she has finally given up all hope, Becca Parsons falls pregnant at the age of forty-two. Her husband, Will is overjoyed, but puzzled by Becca’s strangely lukewarm reaction and shocked when she talks of termination. The strong loving relationship between them suffers, but the support of close family and the Shelter Valley community helps them come to terms with decisions they both need to make. Sub-plots involve a colleague of Will’s whose behaviour warrants censure and a prospective colleague who is removing her sister from an abusive relationship. Quinn touches on several issues: late-in-life pregnancy, adultery, domestic violence, parental sexual abuse and student-teacher relationships. While this could have been a sweet romance, there is rather too much soul-searching on the part of the main characters, enough to make the reader want to shake them and tell them to stop being so self-indulgent and get on with life. Quinn has done better.

This one was a little heartbreaking for me... but was so happy for the end results. I'm not much of the softy side of things but I'm telling ya, this one got to me. A great summer read!

The Best Introductory Edition of Descartes' Writings

Roger Ariew and Hackett Publishing have brought out a terrific edition of Descartes' writings, superior to the one published by Cambridge University Press for several reasons. First, the typeface in the Cambridge edition is not very clear--it almost looks like the pages have been photocopied.
Second, the Hackett edition not only has Descartes' important philosophical works, but also includes a fine selection from Descartes' minor writings and correspondence (since Cambridge also publishes the complete writings of Descartes, they're not particularly motivated to do something like this). One finds, e.g., Descartes' 1640 letter to Colvius regarding the 'cogito ergo sum' argument found in Augustine's City of God, as well as two very important letters to the Marquis of Newcastle and Henry More regarding the question of whether animals have souls and whether space is infinite and vacuums are possible.
All selections are arranged chronologically, and Ariew has written a helpful introduction. Numbers in the page margins correlate each selection to the place where it is found in the standard original language edition of Descartes' works (Oeuvres de Descartes, eds. Adam and Tannery, 2nd ed., Paris: 1964-74). This is THE introductory edition to get.

The Hackett Publishing Co. has more editions of Descartes than any other philosopher, and it can be confusing at first which edition is the best to buy. Readers interested in getting a nice taste of Descartes' philosophy (and not merely his Meditations) should definitely buy this edition, as should students studying Descartes. This edition includes not only the Meditations, but also the invaluable objections and replies to the Meditations (esp. Arnauld), along with his Discourse on Method, the Passions of the Soul, The World, The Search After Truth and even some of his correspondence. More importantly, the lesser read texts 'Rules for the Direction of the Mind' and 'Principles of Philosophy' are in this edition, which I find to be two of Descartes' most important writings, and cannot be ignored in studying Descartes. More serious readers in Descartes should look into having his complete three-volume philosophical writings through Cambridge (CSM, be warned that these go for around $40 each: The Philosophical Writings of Descartes: Volume 1, The Philosophical Writings of Descartes: Volume 2, The Philosophical Writings of Descartes (Volume 3: The Correspondence (Paperback))), but both the scholar and the student benefit from having this fine and accessible collection put together by Roger Ariew. It's well worth the extra money to buy this Hackett edition rather than merely having the Meditations and the Discourse on Method.

Radway's provocative approach combines reader-response criticism with anthropology and feminist psychology. Asking readers themselves to explore their reading motives, habits, and rewards, she conducted interviews in a midwestern town with forty-two romance readers whom she met through Dorothy Evans, a chain bookstore employee who has earned a reputation as an expert on romantic fiction. Evans defends her customers' choice of entertainment; reading romances, she tells Radway, is no more harmful than watching sports on television.

"We read books so we won't cry" is the poignant explanation one woman offers for her reading habit. Indeed, Radway found that while the women she studied devote themselves to nurturing their families, these wives and mothers receive insufficient devotion or nurturance in return. In romances the women find not only escape from the demanding and often tiresome routines of their lives but also a hero who supplies the tenderness and admiring attention that they have learned not to expect.

The heroines admired by Radway's group defy the expected stereotypes; they are strong, independent, and intelligent. That such characters often find themselves to be victims of male aggression and almost always resign themselves to accepting conventional roles in life has less to do, Radway argues, with the women readers' fantasies and choices than with their need to deal with a fear of masculine dominance.

These romance readers resent not only the limited choices in their own lives but the patronizing atitude that men especially express toward their reading tastes. In fact, women read romances both to protest and to escape temporarily the narrowly defined role prescribed for them by a patriarchal culture. Paradoxically, the books that they read make conventional roles for women seem desirable. It is this complex relationship between culture, text, and woman reader that Radway urges feminists to address. Romance readers, she argues, should be encouraged to deliver their protests in the arena of actual social relations rather than to act them out in the solitude of the imagination.

More surprising still is that Janice Radway managed to head down this path almost twenty years ago. Recognizing that a theorist who refuses to engage with popular fiction is ignoring perhaps 90% of what people actually read, Radway does not dismiss romantic fiction as beneath her attention. Rather, she sets out to conduct an empirical study into the genre. In doing so, she addresses some important questions: Why do women read romance? What social and psychological needs does it meet? If there is an "ideal" romance, what are its components and why? How does the unique language of romance do its work? In answering these, Radway not only manages to define an entire genre. She also draws out some rather chilling and not so obvious conclusions about the role of romantic fiction in preventing the feminist agenda from taking hold. And unlike many criticisms of romance, Radway's is based on observation, experience and facts. Her preference for foregrounding the evidence rather than her own views is mightily refreshing. My only reservation is the ease with which she extrapolates the reading experiences of a small group of women into conclusions about American culture in general. However, her excellent introduction to the second edition recognizes this, positions her study in relation to the emerging discipline of cultural studies, and suggests ways in which her study's insights might be further explored and tested. I strongly recommend this to anyone interested in the romance genre, or in academic approaches to popular fiction in general. Readers, writers, students and critics will all find something to learn here.

Strongly Feminist

I found the responses of the individuals interviewed interesting, but the analysis rather uninteresting. Unless you are a proponent of feminist theory the authors thoughts and interpretations of the women's reasons for reading romance novels is bound to seem pretty suspect. She does own up to this in the introduction, and the material is still interesting, I just got sick of hearing about patriarchal marriages mighty quick.

A major contribution to the field of cultural studies

I was disappointed to see that an earlier reviewer found the book condescending. I think it is true that when the book was written, for a largely academic audience, back in 1984, she probably felt she had to bend over backwards to have her work taken seriously by academics, so she couldn't have written "as a fan." But condescending? I really didn't think so. This book was inspirational to me when I was trying to find a way to approach the material I study (and personally enjoy), Japanese girls' and women's comics. I don't know if Janice (whom I know and admire) is a fan of romance novels, but I know she has always enjoyed popular literature, and that she really tried, in this book, to see romances as their readers see them, and to convey that point of view to academics and feminists who have always looked on romance with contempt. But think about it: if she had written the book from a "fannish," "gee-aren't-romance-novels-great" point of view, it would have ended up as a book by and for romance readers, and wouldn't have contributed to helping non romance-readers understand the genre. I would recommend this book to A) anyone who has always considered "genre fiction" to be pap, B) feminists who want to break out of the "feminists vs. non-feminist women" paradigm, and C) romance readers who would like some ammunition in defending the genre to others.

If you have been following weblogs for the past few years you've probably come across many of these articles online, but having them available in one collection gives them context. A glossary and good references round out this well-edited anthology. Blood's enthusiasm for the subject carries over to her own work, The Weblog Handbook, which is not the do-it-yourself technique book you might expect. Instead, Blood takes on the role of mentor; she's been there and done that and has much wisdom to share. She is eager to convert readers into bloggers and offers good advice on finding one's voice, observing etiquette, and living online. Unfortunately, a lengthy afterword that focuses on the culture of weblogs seems a better fit for We've Got Blog. Appendixes offer a brief glimpse of creating a test weblog and working with links, but this book is written for someone who has flirted with the idea of starting a weblog and feels comfortable jumping right into the format. Just read some blogs instead

I like blogs. I think they are a nice example of technology coming around to meet the way people interact. For years we've said that the secret to a web site was to keep refreshing the content, so people would want to return. The difficulty in keeping content fresh was as much a technological problem (the annoyances of editing, publishing, etc. both at home and on the road) as well as psychological (what needs to be updated, what do people want to read). The blog is to the 2000s what desktop publishing was to the 1980s: expanding publishing tools out to more people. Will everyone write a blog? No. In the 1980s, not everyone wrote a 'zine (although it started to feel like it at times). The comparison continues, as early 'zines suffered from overuse of fonts and design elements that blogs now mirror in incompatible HTML coding and stylesheets. None of this takes away from the very real power of allowing people to publish their writing faster, quicker, and better.
I feel I must say this so that you understand that my negative reaction to this book is to the book itself, and not the book's subject. We've Got Blog is a mishmash of articles, mostly (if not entirely--I couldn't tell) reprinted from blogs themselves, that tries to define blogs, why they are important, and how they may affect the future of journalism and the Internet. A few of the articles are well-written and interesting; most, however, suffer from their origins in that they seem quite ephemeral and off-the-cuff. Despite the "solution" to do links in the originals as endnotes, when you read text in a book that lacks the immediacy to check out the links, something is lost. If anything, the book truly makes it clear the difference between print and screen. Most of the articles seem strange because of the very ephemeral nature of how they were originally published, how putting them in a compiliation removed them from the very time and place that they were meant to be. This is especially true of the extended conversation about MetaFilter from MetaFilter that ends the book, where the banality of the conversation overwhelms the permancy of acid-free paper.
I'm 0 for 2 in reading books about blogs (I wasn't much impressed by Rebecca Blood's handbook, either), but I remain committed to the medium in spite of this. We've Got Blog is useful for the historical record (although the Internet Archive probably could have provided this as well), but we're still waiting for the book that will truly help codify what the fuss is all about.

A let down

Basically, this is a book of essays about weblogs, many of which I had read before, as well as read blurbs on other weblogs which linked to these essays. I felt rather let down by the book, as I had the impression that these would be heretofore unseen works by the First-Gen Blog Darlings.
Perhaps the only people who'd get anything out of it would be rank newbies who just want to know what all this blogging business is about. People who are already "in the know" should probably steer clear and get "Small Pieces Loosely Joined."

It's not that the essays in this book are bad. Most of them are either entertaining, interesting or illuminating. But they're ALL availble online, and are frankly better reads online, with links and design and context. Yes, the book presents a new context by presenting the articles together, but the only context provided is Rebecca Blood's preface, which is fine but not startling. The editors are apparently so ashamed of this poor (and possibly successful; I paid up) attempt to make money on the popularity of blogging that they haven't even put their names to the book.
