Great content for object oriented programming, faults in the printing process.
By Amazon Customer
The content of the book is great, even though Visual C++ 6 is old, the explanations about object oriented programming are so clear I had to search for this book explicitly now that I have to teach it. However the printing has a considerable fault: when the background is gray the definition is terrible, sometimes it is even difficult to read and it definitely looks bad, and those are suposed to be highlighted topics! Guys of the "on demand printing" you definitely need to work on this.

Good, but not great.....
By Jonathan Fowler
This book is pretty good on C++ syntax, but doesn't do much on actually getting into the MFC and Windows programming side of things. I would highly recommend Sam's Teach Yourself Visual C++ 6.0 for learning the basics of MFC programming.

Well, at least they've got a sense of humor
By Ron .F (forteny@pipeline.com)
Major problem with this book: The first 9 chapters start off very promising, as the writers very painlessly walk you through the Visual C++ program, really setting you up nicely to do some cool Windows programming. (That IS why we use Visual C++, isn't it: ...to create Windows programs?) As you read through the first few chapters, you start to think "Wow, this is going to be great: I've got these Wizards to build these buttons and toolbars and stuff for me, and now I'm going to learn how to fill in the code and use pointers and objects and stuff to make my very own Windows Apps! This will Rock!!! Microsoft will want to hire me tomorrow!!!" And just when you're ready to start learning some programming for Windows in Part II of the book, the authors say "ehhh-EEEEEEEEHHH!!! We ain't gonna be doin' no Windows Programmin', boy: That'd be beyond the scope o' this li'l book! We're gonna spend the rest of our days here learnin' ya' how to program C++ in a Win32 console (Read: Glorified DOS shell)!!!"
Um, excuse me, but if I wanted to learn about objects and scope and pointers and all that fun C++ stuff, wouldn't I just be reading "C++ for Dummies"??? What's the point of showing us how to create a Windows app using Visual C++ if we're just going to spend the rest of the book writing a completely impractical DOS jukebox program, for which, incidentally, they never do provide all of the necessary multimedia files on the CD?
Once you're over that major fault, however, the book does do a rather decent job of explaining the nuts and bolts of pure C++ programming in a simple fashion, with clever little humorous anecdotes and quips to keep it interesting.
Although I'd easily trade in some of the humor for a little actual Windows programming.
BTW, I'm sure the authors are not hillbilies: I just did that for effect. :-)

Practical Magic, by Alice Hoffman

From the New York Times best-selling author of The Dovekeepers...

For more than two hundred years, the Owens women had been blamed for everything that went wrong in their Massachusetts town. And Gillian and Sally endured that fate as well; as children, the sisters were outsiders. Their elderly aunts almost seemed to encourage the whispers of witchery, but all Gillian and Sally wanted was to escape. One would do so by marrying, the other by running away. But the bonds they shared brought them back-almost as if by magic...

Fall in love whenever you can . . .
By A Customer
That is an admonishment at the end of this wonderful book by Alice Hoffman. I'll preface my mini-review here with the following statement: Had anyone told me a year ago that I would read --in one day-- a romance about lives and loves of successive generations of women blessed or cursed with witchy powers, I would have laughed at them. A few years back, I tried to watch the movie "Practical Magic" and found myself thoroughly bored by what I considered a talky "chick flick." Since then, I've become a fan of Sandra Bullock and recently saw the film again, and found myself liking it for the most part. I particularly loved the sad, wistful character played by Bullock, that of Sally Owens.
So I checked the book out from the library, not knowing what to expect, and like a man in the story who becomes enchanted by a letter Sally writes that comes into his possession, "Practical Magic" hooked me. Hoffman writes with such easy, beautiful prose and the characters really spring to life and find a place in your heart and imagination.
I won't regurgitate the plot here. But I will say that Hoffman writes so well about perhaps the most exquisite and maybe the rarest kind of love, the type that hits both a man and a woman like a thunderbolt, overpowering and sweeping them both away. Hoffman's descriptions of this happening to Sally and her sister and the two men that they are destined to be with packs a tremendous and very satisfying emotional punch for any romantic, which I guess I am. Oh, how I found myself envying the lucky men who won the hearts of Sally and Gillian! To feel love as strong as that and be loved as fiercely in return must be the best thing in the world.
So read the book and like Sally Owens would say, fall in love whenever you can.

Not my usual cup of tea...
By Kathy Taylor
I was excited when I found out this book was real. I grew up watching the movie and I had fell in love with how in the MOVIE the sisters had an unbreakable bond and the aunts were they type of aunts I desperately wished I had growing up. Aunts who let the girls eat chocolate for breakfast, did magical spells in the kitchen, wore purple and made midnight margaritas. However, aunts in the book are very different from the film. They are much older and much creepier. The book doesn't really talk about a family curse that the Owens women are plagued with but as you read you find the sad truth of just how the "cruse" started and how it trickled down to Sally and Gillian.
The book is almost the opposite from the film in every way. Sally and Gillian are sisters that lose their parents and are sent to live with their aunts who are the local witches in a very small and close-minded town. The aunts pretty much let the girls raise themselves which causes Sally to become the logical one who always had to think and calculate every step before she takes it and Gillian who throws caution to the wind and wears her heart of her sleeve. In the book, Sally is very resentful of her sister and at times hates her. The book is well written but tends to drift off in places. One moment you're reading about how difficult of a time Sally is having raising her teenage daughters and the next you're reading about the thoughts of a pizza delivery boy who makes a brief appearance in one paragraph.
Sally loses her husband in a freak accident and then spends a year basically as a mute who ignores her daughters and responsibilities as a mother. Gillian marries many times and leaves her husbands heartbroken because the sparks has gone out for her and she finds herself in a bored. Hoffman describes the way the sisters fall in love with their "true loves" like being struck by lightning. When Gillian shows up at her sisters place - after having not seen each other for many years - with her dead boyfriend she is in desperate need of help. The book and film are two different types of stories. The movie leaves out so much and changes important plot points. The book in its own way is beautifully written and a very different type of love story. Not my usual cup of tea...but I defiantly would recommend it.

Champagne in a Cauldron
By Jean Baldridge Yates
You never know what to expect from an Alice Hoffman book, except for an incredibly light touch that belies her sharp contol of plot. She has such finesse as she writes, and she writes in such a unique style, it is hard to put one of her books down for a second. This author loves writing, and it shows. You will love the results. I do not think there is another living writer who is able to entwine such magic and realism into a story the way she does, all the time focusing on daily life and never losing sight of the mysteries that cause us to act in the ways that we do, sometimes for good reasons, sometimes for bad reasons.
When there is a double ragged ring around the moon, when the smell of lilacs is strong and it is well past the time they should have finished blooming...when you have a family whose odd heritage goes back hundreds of years and they draw people to them unexpectedly...there you will find Alice Hoffman, weaving happy endings out of strange happenings, and lovely images out of eerie events. Don't ever try to outthink her. Part of the fun is just enjoying the way she pulls it all together in the end. Truly special.

She loves her friends and students in the West, but family obligations have called her home. Where does she truly belong?

After a year of teaching in the Canadian West, Beth Thatcher returns home to her family. She barely has time to settle in before her mother announces plans for a family holiday--a luxurious steamship tour along the eastern coast of Canada and the United States. Hoping to reconnect with her mother and her sisters, Beth agrees to join them, but she quickly realizes that things have changed since she went away, and renewing their close bond is going to be more challenging than she expected.

There's one special thing to look forward to--letters and telephone calls from Jarrick, the Mountie who has stolen her heart. The distance between them is almost too much to bear. But can she give her heart to Jarrick when it will mean saying good-bye to her family once again--and possibly forever? And will she still want to live in the western wilds after the steamship tour opens up a world of people and places she never imagined?

Then comes a great test of Beth's faith. Someone in her family has trusted the wrong person, and suddenly everything Beth knows and loves is toppled. Torn between her family and her dreams, will Beth finally discover where her heart truly belongs?

Wonderful Book!
By Kris Anderson - The Avid Reader
Where Trust Lies by Janette Oke and Laurel Oke Logan is the second book in the Return to the Canadian West series. Beth Thatcher is returning home for the summer after spending the year teaching in Coal Valley. She does not know if she will be asked to teach again in Coal Valley and is going to miss her friends and students. On the way to the train station Jack Thornton, a mountie, tells Beth how he feels about her. He would like to write and call her (the start of their courtship). Beth reciprocates Jack's (she calls him Jarrick) feelings and looks forward to hearing from him soon.

Upon arriving home Beth finds out that the family (the female members of the family) are planning a vacation. They are going to take a boat from Quebec to Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, Boston, New York, and then to Florida. Mrs. Thatcher (Priscilla), Margret (Beth's older, married sister), J.W. (Margret's son), Julie (Beth's younger sister), Emma (the maid), Miss Bernard (the nanny), and Beth embark on the adventure. Mrs. Montclair and her daughter, Victoria are also going along on the trip. Mr. Thatcher has hired Monsieur Emile Laurant to act as their guide and chaperone on the trip (he is also handling the money and itinerary). Mr. Thatcher and Mr. Montclair are going to South America on business.

Where Trust Lies is a very good book. I was disappointed, though, that it did not take place in Coal Valley. It was interesting to find out more about Beth's family. Her sister, Julie is very young, naïve, but determined to make her own decisions (like her friends, cutting her hair, buying inappropriate clothes). I enjoyed Beth's deepening romance with Jack. I am a big fan of Janette Oke and have read all of her books. I would give this book 4 out of 5 stars. I look forward to the next book in the series, and I hope it will take place in Coal Valley.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

To enjoy this book, read the first book first.
By 507fds
As I was reading this book, I felt I was missing out because I did not read the first book. A lot of the background of the story was missing, and because of that I did not enjoy it very much. It was slow moving, and I would have to say kind of boring. It was a struggle to keep reading it to complete it. This book was a counting story of Elizabeth Thatcher the summer after her first year of teaching. She goes on a cruise to see various cities and landmarks with her sisters, mother, and some family friends. If I had read the first book, I think my review would be completely different because I would be more invested in the characters.

I received this book free from Bethany House Publishers for my unbiased review. I give it 2 out of 5 stars.

western mining town where she taught the previous year. Beth
has a romantic interest there also.
Upon arriving home, she learns her mother & sisters have
planned a summer cruise. The cruise will encompass Quebec to
Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, Boston, New York and
Florida.
Never having been on a cruise myself, this will an enjoy sail
seen through the eyes of Elizabeth. The story presented the ups
and down of life on a cruise ship. You will learn about the way
the ship docks in various towns of interest for the passengers to
disembark to visit the site and stores in each town.
The scenery from both on & off the ships was described vividly
that you felt you were there. I love the whale watching scenes.
The author presented the relationships between the family
members and supporting characters. Some qualities that stood
out were abundant love, forgiveness, faith and trust and prayer
of all involved.
Although historical fiction, the author captured the attitudes
plus social realities of the times. The story also provides
mystery, suspense and drama.
This is the second book in Return to the Canadian West Series.
It can be read as a stand alone.
Thank you to book fun.org for this Book. My opinion is my own.

"A jewel box of a musical: small, delicate, brimming with emotion and charm."—Vogue

"It may sound like heresy to fans of the 2006 film, but this bewitching stage adaptation arguably improves on the movie, expanding its emotional breadth and elevating it stylistically while remaining true to the original's raw fragility."?Hollywood Reporter

Retaining the film's popular music and lyrics, acclaimed Irish playwright Enda Walsh adapts this charming tale of a complicated romance between an Irish street musician and a young Czech immigrant for the stage. A hit musical Off-Broadway, Once premiered on Broadway in spring 2012 to rave reviews.

Enda Walsh is the author of five Edinburgh Festival Fringe First Award-winning plays, including Penelope, The Walworth Farce, and The New Electric Ballroom. He also co-wrote the film Hunger, which won the Camera d'Or award at the Cannes Film Festival.

Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová are the stars and songwriters of the 2006 film Once, for which they won an Academy Award for Best Song. The two comprise the musical folk-rock duo The Swell Season, which is currently touring the United States. A documentary film of the duo, The Swell Season, was an official selection of the 2011 Tribeca Film Festival. Hansard is also a member of the Irish band The Frames and Irglová is a classically trained Czech pianist and vocalist.

I wish I could review with a 6 star rating
By rathwulf
Because I would certainly would. Once, started as a movie a heart wrenching gorgeous movie about how people can bond through music. Its a universal theme as people form affections through bond and love of something mutual. But this work of art took it to another level.

Now the book is pretty much the movie but with certain plot details added, a joke or two to make it smoother but the beauty, the core, the heart and the ultimate expressions of love are there.

Indeed the book and the movie complement each other, and music changes sligthly in the musical so you dont feel it like a movie turned musical automatically upon seeing it.

**spoilers ahead**

**spoilers ahead**

**spoilers ahead**

The ending is pretty much the same, they indeed dont end up together, you know they will do so in the future. Because they love each other, but they still have things to work out with their respective former loved ones. But they are not right for each other. The power is there, the strength of the movie is translated to the play, because when the guy tells the girl about being alone I was moved to tears for I felt his loneliness and when the girl tells him her true feeling in the shadow of her language I cried "Once" more because I felt her regret. The play is strong and stands for itself a an amazing work of beautiful art.

Just...great.
By flapjackjoe
I'm NOT a reader. So for me to actually read this took a lot of internal motivation. I will admit, the book sucks. I mean, me reading the book to myself sucks. But the story is just incredible, and the show is even better. If you've not seen ONCE, you need to see it at least TWICE. It's one of the most intimate theatrical experiences you'll ever have. If a group of actors showed up to my house on any night to read this to me, and I'd be OK with that.

Best. Show. Ever.

If I could give "Once" a million stars, I would. This is the best piece of theatre that I've ever experienced. Owning the script to such a beautiful masterpiece is so exciting. If you ever get the chance to see "Once" live, take it. It's the most beautiful and magical experience you'll ever have

Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch, by Neil Gaiman, Terry Pratchett

According to The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch (the world's only completely accurate book of prophecies, written in 1655, before she exploded), the world will end on a Saturday. Next Saturday, in fact. Just before dinner.

So the armies of Good and Evil are amassing, Atlantis is rising, frogs are falling, tempers are flaring. Everything appears to be going according to Divine Plan. Except a somewhat fussy angel and a fast-living demon—both of whom have lived amongst Earth's mortals since The Beginning and have grown rather fond of the lifestyle—are not actually looking forward to the coming Rapture.

And someone seems to have misplaced the Antichrist . . .

Amazon.com Review
Pratchett (of Discworld fame) and Gaiman (of Sandman fame) may seem an unlikely combination, but the topic (Armageddon) of this fast-paced novel is old hat to both. Pratchett's wackiness collaborates with Gaiman's morbid humor; the result is a humanist delight to be savored and reread again and again. You see, there was a bit of a mixup when the Antichrist was born, due in part to the machinations of Crowley, who did not so much fall as saunter downwards, and in part to the mysterious ways as manifested in the form of a part-time rare book dealer, an angel named Aziraphale. Like top agents everywhere, they've long had more in common with each other than the sides they represent, or the conflict they are nominally engaged in. The only person who knows how it will all end is Agnes Nutter, a witch whose prophecies all come true, if one can only manage to decipher them. The minor characters along the way (Famine makes an appearance as diet crazes, no-calorie food and anorexia epidemics) are as much fun as the story as a whole, which adds up to one of those rare books which is enormous fun to read the first time, and the second time, and the third time...

From Publishers Weekly
When a scatterbrained Satanist nun goofs up a baby-switching scheme and delivers the infant Antichrist to the wrong couple, it's just the beginning of the comic errors in the divine plan for Armageddon which this fast-paced novel by two British writers zanily details. Aziraphale, an angel who doubles as a rare-book dealer, and Crowley, a demon friend who's assigned to the same territory, like life on Earth too much to allow the long-planned war between Heaven and Hell to happen. They set out to find the Antichrist and avert Armageddon, on the way encountering the last living descendant of Agnes Nutter, Anathema, who's been deciphering accurate prophecies of the world's doom but is unaware she's living in the same town as the Antichrist, now a thoroughly human and normal 11-year-old named Adam. As the appointed day and hour approach, Aziraphale and Crowley blunder through seas of fire and rains of fish, and come across a misguided witch hunter, a middle-aged fortune teller and the Four Horsepersons of the Apocalypse. It's up to Adam in the neatly tied end, as his humanity prevails over the Divine Plan and earthly bungling. Some humor is strictly British, but most will appeal even to Americans "and other aliens." From School Library Journal
YA-- The end of the world is nigh! At least according to the prophecies of Agnes Nutter, a witch whose predictions are usually accurate but seldom heeded. Eleven years before the deadly Last Saturday Night, the ancient rivals of good and evil personified by the angelic Aziraphale (otherwise living as a London book dealer) and the demonic devil and former serpent Crowley clash in substituting the Antichrist during the birth of a baby. But the babies are switched as an unexpected third child enters the picture. The confusion picks up pace as witch hunters Sgt. Shadwell and Newton Pulsifer pursue modern Nutter follower Anathema Device. Along the way, countless puns, humorous footnotes, and satirical illusions enliven the story. A book that's sure to appeal to devoted fans of Douglas Adams.

Meh?
By Seb Krugler
I think I was supposed to like this book more than I did. It's the end of the world. The authors are very renowned, and it's supposed to be very humorous in parts. I didn't see where I could go wrong in picking up this book.

The story was well-written. The plot ambled along, and I kept reading because I wanted to find out what happened.

But, boy, was it boring.

It's not often I finish a book, shake my head, and then go, "Well, now that I've read it, I never have to read it again." But that's what I did with this book.

Rather than with a bang and amazement, the resolution to the book felt as though it came abruptly, and in an unsatisfactory manner. We're left to wonder what happens next, and that's okay. The characters still have lives and growing to do, and hopefully they do it well.

I liked some of the characters. Aziraphale and Crowley were my favorite parts if this book. I enjoyed them as well as their interactions, and had great hope for what sort of things they could have gotten up to.

I don't plan on reading this one again.

This book is funny.
By Toinette
This book is funny, especially if you like British humor.

This book has been read and reviewed by so many people that I don’t feel the need to expound on my single profound philosophical opinion about it, as have many others. I like the way the parts of the story that should be taking place in the US still feel very British and I like how the Americans in England come off a bit simple. If you can’t appreciate a bit of national satire, then why bother reading a humorous book.

This book is pretty much one big collection of satires poking fun at: religion, Christianity specifically, occultism, politics, war, child rearing practices and more. Again, for those who don’t have a good sense of humor, this book will either offend or fly over their head.

I will say that the ending came together rather anticlimactic, considering all that happened to get there. Overall, though, it was an enjoyable ride. This book is listed as fantasy in most places and humor in others. I’d call this Paranormal Humor or Religious Satire but let’s be honest, most people wouldn’t pick up the latter because they’d never get passed the first word.

Recommended to adult readers who have a good sense of humor.

The Apocalypse is Coming by Harley
By Ron K
The Kindle edition of Good Omens by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett that I downloaded was a 2011 reprint edition from William Morrow (publisher) sold by Harper Collins Publishers. At four hundred thirty-three pages, the novel is such a huge collection of very funny stuff and observations that it is best read in segments. While you are reading something else. If you get bogged down in something a bit too serious (even a book!) you would have the comfortable knowledge that you have a collection of absurdities in reserve that can pull you out of dull situations.

It is a cult classic and I am not going to waste a bunch of time trying to come up with superlatives not yet used. It is worth reading the reviews such as the ones I found on Amazon. The novel is not everyone’s cup of tea; there are many negative ones. Most of the negative ones I read were of Neil Gaiman and those reviewers complained about a difference in the Gaiman style as compared to his other works. I felt those reviewers were unfair. I can safely bet there are a bunch of Christian religious fundamentalists (not extremists) which would not even attempt to see the humor in the naming and depictions of various members of the holy (and unholy) establishment. Who would have the temerity to suggest that War, Death, and Famine could keep their original Four Horsemen names but Pestilence was going to have to accept an upgrade to Pollution due to the demands of technology?

Back to two complaints I have about the edition I read. (1) Who cares about publisher and publishers and reprint editions and the “when” of an edition? Me, when the novel becomes hard to read. Throughout this edition, there were symbols that looked like this * throughout the novel. I couldn’t initially find what they referred to. The story was moving along nicely at its usual speed of light and ignoring the symbols didn’t hinder its movement at all. Then I found all the referenced items at the end of the novel. And they were interesting. But at that point, there were no page references and I couldn’t easily go back to what they referred to. Grrrr! So, for a better reading experience, click on the tiny symbols. They will take you to the reference. Then click the back button on the Kindle App and it will take you back to the page you were on … maybe. I don’t know how it works when you are reading the novel on several devices at once and synchronization kicks in. That is what caused me problems.

(2) This book was written by two authors in sort of a back-and-forth style. If one couldn’t get past a certain point (make it funny) the other kicked in new ideas. Through lots and lots of conference calls, they came up with this. Of course, Gaiman’s style was different! I am sure both he and Terry Pratchett made compromises in their final submission. I found many of the negative reviewer comments irrelevant.

Now a bit about content. Here are some of the lines I found attention grabbing. Having read these, no way I could put the book down. After reading the subtitle I was hooked. “The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch.” How could I walk away from that? It quickly became apparent that Agnes had written a book predicting the Apocalypse, the end of Days. And, looking at the table of contents (of this novel, not the one by Agnes) we can see that it is going to be very soon. It is a matter of days. Certain events and signs must happen first (re: the four Horsemen) but a lot of subordinate characters, angels and lesser angels, demons and lesser demons, Witchhunters, and innocent bystanders go in search for the missing ingredient, the Antichrist. The Antichrist, appropriately named Adam, has not exactly gotten sidetracked in his mission. He was never informed of the mission. He grew up as a “normal” boy. Although he always seemed to be the leader of any group, the one with the best ideas, and the ability to bend everyone else to his will, he did not act knowingly as the Antichrist. He is simply known by his nickname “The Adversary, Destroyer of Kings, Angel of the Bottomless Pit, Great Beast that is called Dragon, Prince of This World, Father of Lies, Spawn of Satan, and Lord of Darkness. (p. 27). At least that is what Crowley, Satan’s representative on Earth, calls his soon-to-be-master.
This is a hilarious, sarcastic, cynical, and absurd look at the fragility of human nature. For those who want to relate absurd happenings to literal happenings in present day reality, there is lots of material to allow a reader to do that.

But I couldn’t stop laughing and didn’t want to spoil it with reality. I will read more novels with the Gaiman name. And I will take care of them. I will not treat them in a way described at the beginning of this novel. “If we run across a shiny new copy, it’s usually because the owner’s previous five have been stolen by friends, struck by lightning or eaten by giant termites in Sumatra. You have been warned. Oh, and we understand there’s a copy in the Vatican library.” (p. 2).
