For McGarry the territory mapped is an Irish, Catholic, working-class parish in Providence, R.I. Her characters begin or end here. Some of the stories deal with the same characters: two sisters, Margery and April, and their parents. In an early story the girls are young, in the last story about them April is in college and Margery is preparing for her wedding. An accumulation of telling detail presents the texture, the confinement, and especially the language of this world. In Wetherell's collection (winner of the 1985 Drue Heinz Literature Prize) people are caught in a moment of internal or external disaster: a man sets fire to the house he loves; a boy rejects the mindless optimism of his grandfather; in a tennis game, an adult brother and sister battle to dominate the family. In the title story (an O'Henry prizewinner) a World War II vet buys a house in Levittown where he spends the best years of his life. His wife has died, his grown children have left, and one by one his neighbors are selling out and moving to Florida. Beneath the talky, narrative voice of this story you discover the internal logic of a man pushed beyond reason to a desperate act. Burke's stories (he has also written four novels) seem inevitable, style and content superbly merged. In ``Uncle Sidney and the Mexicans'' a young man, out of school for the summer, is picking tomatoes with a partly Mexican crew. The boy learns about honor, learns how to differentiate between accepted prejudice and his own inner feelings. In ``Losses'' a young boy must learn to accept and forgive the human weakness hidden behind adult authority. MUCH MORE THAN SIMPLY A COMMENTARY ON THE GOSPEL OF THOMAS

Elaine Pagels (born 1943) is Professor of Religion at Princeton University; she has written many other books such as The Gnostic Gospels, Revelations: Visions, Prophecy, and Politics in the Book of Revelation, Adam, Eve, and the Serpent: Sex and Politics in Early Christianity, The Gnostic Paul: Gnostic Exegesis of the Pauline Letters, etc. [NOTE: page numbers refer to the 258-page paperback edition.]

She reveals in the first chapter of this 2003 book how (wearing t-shirt and running shorts) she stopped into a church, shortly after her son was diagnosed with a rare lung disease. "Standing in the back of that church, I recognized, uncomfortably, that I needed to be there. Here was a place to weep without imposing tears upon a child; and here was a heterogeneous community that had gathered to sing, to celebrate, to acknowledge common needs, and to deal with what we cannot control or imagine. Yet the celebration in progress spoke of hope... Before that time, I could only ward off what I had heard and felt the day before." (Pg. 3-4)

She adds, "As I began to sometimes participate in church services after decades of absence, I experienced the power of worship in new ways. I had grown up nominally Protestant, and thought of ritual as empty form, but now I saw how it could join people of diverse cultures and viewpoints into a single community, and focus and renew their energies." (Pg. 14) She adds, "This, then, is what I dimly recognized as I stood in the doorway of the Church of the Heavenly Rest. The drama being played out there 'spoke to my condition,' as it has to that of millions of people throughout the ages, because it simultaneously acknowledges the reality of fear, grief, and death while---paradoxically---nurturing hope. Four years later, when our son, then six years old, suddenly died, the Church of the Heavenly Rest offered some shelter, along with words and music, when family and friends gathered to bridge an abyss that had seemed impassable." (Pg. 26-27)

She observes, however, that "The Church... helped me to realize much that I love about religious tradition, and Christianity in particular... At the same time, I was also exploring in my academic work the history of Christianity in the light of the Nag Hammadi discoveries, and this research helped clarify what I cannot love: the tendency to identify Christianity with a single, authorized set of beliefs... coupled with the conviction that Christian belief alone offers access to God." (Pg. 29)

After the emotion of this early chapter, the rest of the book seems almost anticlimactic. Nevertheless, Pagels' analysis of early Christian history contains her characteristic historical illumination; e.g., "This sketch of what happened during the fourth century does not support the simplistic view often expressed by historians in the past---namely, that catholic Christianity prevailed only because their leaders somehow succeeded in coercing them... Nor does this sketch support the view that Constantine simply used Christianity for cynical purposes. We do not know his motives, but his actions suggest that he believed he had found in Christ an all-powerful divine patron and the promise of eternal life; and during the thirty years he ruled after that, he legislated... the moral values he found in biblical sources---the vision of a harmonious society built upon divine justice, that shows concern even for its poorest members." (Pg. 179-180)

She concludes on the note, "How can we tell truth from lies? What is genuine... and what is shallow, self-serving, or evil?... there is no easy answer to the problem that the ancients called discernment of spirits... Many of us, wishing to be spared hard work, gladly accept what tradition teaches. But the fact that we have no simple answer does not mean that we can evade the question. We have also seen the hazards... that sometimes result from unquestioning acceptance of religious authority. Most of us, sooner or later, find that... we must strike out on our own to make a path where none exists. What I have come to love in the wealth and diversity of our religious traditions---and the communities that sustain them---is that they offer the testimony of innumerable people to spiritual discovery." (Pg. 184-185)

Much more "personal" than Pagels' other books, this book will appeal to a very wide path of readers---those seeking historical insight, as well as spiritual "seekers" from Christian or other traditions.

Over 50 full-color photographs from Spain and Latin America supplement the second section. Temperature charts, solar diagrams, and other key technical data accompany these images.

Finally an extensive section of planning and design guidelines highlighting factors for consideration such as daytime/nighttime temperature ranges, zoning regulations, proportions, and proposals for driveways and use of rainwater.

THE Book on Courtyards.

Courtyards is a terrific book, the result of 20+ years of loving research. Oregon Professor John Reynolds is crazy for courtyards and it certainly shows.
A courtyard is a space surrounded by a building, often surrounded by a house. There are all manner of courtyards, large, small, huge, quiet, loud. Some are open and others are terribly private. But all good courtyards have things in common. In the landscapes most of us in the US are used to, we have a house and the gardens are on the outside and we see them before we see the house. In a sense these landscapes serve mostly as dressing to enhance the outward look of the house. But a fine courtyard garden is different. It is smack in the middle of the house and the house surrounds it. It is not wide open to the world, but instead is a place to get away from it all, a place to be outside, but not to be out in the open. The best courtyards are open to the sky, have water, vines, a multitude of interesting flowers, trees, potted plants. A large number of the very finest courtyard plants are discussed in detail in this excellent book. I was struck by how interesting the numerous photos and designs were. Profusely illustrated, each one serves a definitive purpose. I was struck too, by how many different things go into the making of a well thought out courtyard. What is involved so that it will be warm in the winter and cool in the hot summer. What is involved so that it becomes a place where people want to be. I took many notes as I read this large book and some day I plan to build a house of my own design, and in the middle of it, I'm going to have a courtyard. And in this courtyard, I'll have all the things needed, the ingredients so carefully detailed here, that make the right courtyard a magical place. I'd recommend this book for anyone who ever plans to build their own home, for all landscape designers, for all architects, for anyone with a serious interest in horticulture and design. An excellent book.

Courtyards, An Environment Worthy of Serious Study

I am a design professional with a particular interest in courtyards, patios, and indoor outdoor garden rooms. In my business I look at courtyards and patios as part of the living space. Important as the living room or bedroom, a courtyard is sometimes the center of life and delight in a residence or commercial building. The Reynold's book "Courtyards" takes the subject as seriously as I do. If I cannot spend months or years traveling around the world studying courtyards at least I can read this book and immerse myself in ALL the history, micro-climatic impact, and design information. There are photographs of courtyards in Mexico, Spain, Argentina, and elsewhere. There is a chapter on how temperature levels fluctuate (or don't) in courtyards and how these spaces have provided social and cultural settings. For instance in some Islamic cultures where women are supposed to be kept hidden away from the rest of society they spend much of their lives in -- you guessed it -- a courtyard concealed within a residence. There is detailed technical data about aspect ratios and thermal sailing and I am studying all of it. I want to be fully informed so that when I create courtyards for clients I use valid historical, technical, and cultural knowledge. It's nice to come across a book that is a detailed study of what I make my living creating -- indoor/outdoor garden rooms. Note: I withheld one star from my rating because I wished some of the photographs were larger.

About the Author
Amanda Edwards, M.A. has been working in the field of early childhood education for the past 6 years. Her experience includes work with infants, toddlers, and preschool age children, in the education setting, as both a teacher and administrator. She currently holds a membership with the National Association for the Education of Young Children and earned her M.A. in early childhood education from Loyola Marymount University. Prior to her graduate work, she completed her B.A. in child and adolescent development with a minor in family studies from CSU, Northridge. Additionally, Amanda has volunteered as a research assistant studying inner-city foster youth, supported children in the hospital setting, and local community organizations. Her aspiration for early childhood education stems from her personal experiences, providing a strong passion to assist young children whom experience grief and loss. Leslie Ponciano, Ph.D. is a developmental psychologist, the Director of Research for Age of Learning (ABCmouse.com), and a professor in early childhood education and applied developmental psychology. She has created, directed, and taught academic courses at Loyola Marymount University, UCLA, and CSULA. Dr. Ponciano’s research examines the social and emotional development of children in non-parental care such as ECE classrooms and foster care. She also has experience as a social worker/supervisor in foster care, an infant-toddler teacher, and a behavioral specialist. Dr. Ponciano helped to develop the curriculum for Peace4Kids, a community-based organization serving foster children. Dr. Ponciano obtained a B.A. in Psychology from UCI, a M.A. in Developmental Psychology from Teachers College, Columbia University, and a Ph.D. in Psychological Studies in Education from the UCLA. Julia Horwitz is a student at Vistamar High School with a love of writing and drawing, both in fine-point sharpie. In her past experience she has helped to orchestrate an arts summer program for students at an inner-city elementary school in Los Angeles. Her written work has been published in her school’s literary magazine and newspaper and her artwork has been showcased at the Vistamar School Arts Night (It was at this showcase that Leslie Ponciano first came across her drawings). The Elephant in the Room is her first published illustrated work and has been an incredible experience.

What a wonderful book!

I was a young child and had to face a death in my family for the first time. I was scared about this thing called "funeral." I wish my Mom had a book like The Elephant in the Room to help her explain to me what loss is and to cope and deal with it. The illustrations are beautiful! I really enjoyed this book.

John is currently a part of DigiPen's Research and Development branch in Singapore in addition to DigiPen Game Studios. He is also the lead instructor of the DigiPen-Ubisoft Campus Game Programming Program, instructing graduate-level students in an intensive, advanced-level game programming curriculum. In addition to that, he also tutors and assists students in various subjects and gives lectures on C#, C++, Unreal, Unity, game design, and more.

Lot to learn here, not for absolute beginners

This is not new book on learning Unity and learning (more) C#. As Unity has been updated to version 5 this is a welcome book working with the last version of Unity. However it is not a starters book, you should know something already about programming and/or C# to be able to work with it. For example on page 12:

"The System.Collections namespace contains interfaces and classes that define various collections of objects, such as lists, queues, bit arrays, hash tables, and dictionaries."

This should not scare you away. If you have no idea what classes are or lists or queues or arrays etc. you should either get this (basic programming) knowledge elsewhere or accept that you do not completely understand it. As the tutorials on making various games go step by step, you actually do not need to know all these things on page 12. On the other hand, sometimes the explanation is perhaps a bit short (for beginners). e.g.:

"You can think of a class as a kind of blueprint for creating a new component type that can be attached to GameObjects, the objects inside our scenes that start out with just Transform and then have components added to them." (pg.13).

So, the upside is that if you know a bit about programming, the long stories explaining the basic concepts (of objects, classes, arrays, etc) are not there and you get to the solution fast. My advice would be: make sure you understand the basic concepts of programming before you start with this book (such as objects, classes, variables, methods, behaviors, etc.)

So the level is quite advanced. A lot of the tutorial examples are about finding your way in Unity, and a bit about scripting. After you have gone trough these tutorials I suppose you are ready for your own games. If you need to understand a particular part of Unity (e.g. how to make a GUI or how to spawn enemies in a FPS) then get this book. So have a look in the table of contents to see if will be of use to you.
