New Classic and New Standard for Medical Physics Textbooks

After reading several chapters of this new edition, I am compelled by my excitement about it to write this review here. The 3rd Edition of "Bushberg" is not just a newer version of the already-classic textbook; it is entirely a new book. Its contents are largely rewritten, with vivid illustrations added for almost every concept mentioned in the text. For example, the chapter of Computed Tomography (Chapter 10) now contains 72 figures, without even counting figure subsets; that is more than one figure per page. Everything is illustrated.

The reorganization of content and addition of numerous colorful figures have fundamentally improved this book, and may set a new standard for future medical physics textbooks. Now those physics concepts in medical imaging are much easier to understand. After reading the institutional copy in preparation for teaching a class, I decided to order a copy for myself to replace my old edition (and come here to tell everybody about it). In my opinion, the 3rd Edition of this book will set a high standard for future medical physics textbooks.

Excellent and expansive text on medical imaging

The third edition of "The Essential Physics of Medical Imaging" contains a thousand pages of text, tables, and figures. The layout of the book is very attractive, with full color used throughout and to good effect. The authors have done an excellent job communicating the underlying physics through liberal use of diagrams. One or more figures appear on nearly every page spread.

The text makes strong efforts to explain the physics behind the phenomena, which is geared at the level of a first year physics course, while the handful of calculus equations are explained in the text. The required physics knowledge is nicely summarized in the first Appendix. The book is targeted for a clinical audience and should be comprehensible to anyone in medical imaging willing to invest the effort. A good example is the section on magnetic resonance imaging, which is methodically explained without distracting jargon or lengthy equations.

It is not a mathematically driven text. For that material I would turn to Kak and Slaney's "Principles of Computerized Tomographic Imaging" or Epstein's "Introduction to the Mathematics of Medical Imaging." It also does not focus on the instrumentation used, for which Bronzino's "The Biomedical Engineering Handbook" is a good resource.

These comments aside, the text delivers on its promise to elucidate the relationship between medical imaging and the underlying physics it employs.

Essential Physics Review

This text book is the most up to date and comprehensive text book available for radiology residents preparing for the ABR exam as of this date 3/12/2002. I have recommended this text for my most serious students and they have done quite well on the ABR exam. ( Most have scored in the > 90th percentile in the U.S.) For residents who want to just pass the exam, I recommend Sprawls text.

Remember the graveyard dream scene in Fiddler on the Roof? Dybbuks, troubled spirits who try to enact their ascent into the afterlife by borrowing someone else's life, played an important instructional role in Jewish mythology as messengers, judges, or scolds. This collection contains the novella-sized drama "A Dybbuk or Between Two Worlds," plus 13 shorter tales of the spirit world. In the title story, a deceased man possesses the body of his beloved Leah. As Leah comes to realize what has happened, she resolves to sacrifice herself in order to be with her intended bridegroom. His shroud of death becomes sunlight when Leah finally joins him. In "God on Trial," God gets in trouble for, among other things, the destruction of the Temple, which He had decreed. The judges decide that God made a mistake and had inspired the emperor to issue the order. Upon God's recanting of the edict, the emperor concurs, and all is well again. "The Creation Melody" is a the folktale of a song performed for completion of structures. It was composed during a fundraiser in which the congregation of a synagogue found that they no longer had the funds for completion of construction. The rabbi was challenged, for a price, to come up with a new song within five minutes. When he did, the challenge was paid and the synagogue was finished. Each story in this collection depicts a piece of an ancient culture with a rich literary heritage. --SusanSwartwout

Highly interested in his Jewish heritage, he is also an experienced adapter of classic plays in other languages. Considering all those qualities, he seems a natural to renovate the greatest Yiddish theatrical classic for modern American sensibilities. His version, based on Neugroschel's translation, of S. Ansky's melodrama about a young bride invaded by the soul of the man who should have been her husband is operatically intense and spooky, of a piece with contemporary popular entertainments that powerfully mix passion and mysticism--The Exorcist comes immediately to mind, but A Dybbuk is more refined and more disturbing in the questions it provokes about the flesh and the spirit. The play is of normal length, so this volume is nicely filled out by a selection of Ansky's verse and prose that includes folktales, religious fables, and a Jewish apocalyptic prophecy that the Christian John of Patmos could not make more severe. A great play and some interesting ancillary material

If Harold Bloom, in his afterword to the play, is to be believed, Tony Kushner has taken great liberties in adapting this 'classic of Yiddish theater.' Unfamiliar with the source material, I can only comment on how wonderful Kushner's version is.
A DYBBUK is the story of a gifted rabbinical student named Chonen who begins dabbling in the mystical text of the Kabbalah. He seeks to use it to prevent the arranged marriage of the girl he is in love with, Leah. Instead, it causes him to die and to inhabit her body. What follows is a wonderful supernatural investigation as to why Chonen has become 'a dybbuk' and how to seperate him from Leah without killing her. I really enjoyed it.
I'm a Kushner fan, and that's what led me here. I thoroughly admired what he did in freely adapting Pierre Cornielle's L'ILLUSION COMIQUE into THE ILLUSION. This DYBBUK another triumph of translation. As a goy (a non-Jew), I had no problem following the parts of the play that delved into Chassidic (their spelling) culture and Jewish law.
Speaking of translation, several other short stories by -- and folk tales collected by -- S. Ansky are included. They are interesting and provide a sort of background to the play. They are bittersweet in that most of them are joyful and about songs, but they are also final traces of a European Jewish culture that, after the terrors of Hitler, can never exist as it once did.
The stories are only a few pages each and read as if they were originally written in English, which is the best you can ask of a translation. Two are in trocaic tetrameter. One is a take off on the book of Revelations. Many of them deal with the origin of songs, or legends about Baal Shem Tov.
But the play is the main thing. It's a great story and Kushner overlays it with philosophical and theological dimensions that will please fans of ANGELS IN AMERICA. For those interested in Yiddish theater, and those who are fans of Kushner, I wholeheartedly recommend A DYBBUK. 5/5 stars.

THE dybbuk

This is THE version of the play to read. I've tried to read several other translations, and this is the first time I've made it all the way through, thanks to Kushner's adaptation, which is lean and poetic. At no point did I space out because I didn't understand the tradition or the arcana. Chonen's dabbling in Kabbalah feels timely and even appropriate given the rapidly changing world in which he lives. The horrors of the twentieth century are knocking on the doors of the Jews of Brinnitz and Mirapol, Poland is heading over the brink, and an old way of life is doomed not just by historical forces but by the wavering faith of its leaders. Against the lukewarm spirit of the rabbis and community leaders stand the love of Chonen and Leah and the spiritual betrothal which guides them. Condemned to live in two worlds, they take the ultimate step beyond life into the darkness where opposites not only unite, but fuse in a soul-marriage. The mystical rapture they achieve makes the practical, ethical religion of the elders seem faint and puny, but they must die to the world to achieve their hearts' desire. This is a romantic form of tragedy that's stirring to the soul but also troubling for those of us who have opted for life. In classic tragedy, the protagonist walks on, wounded but wiser; with this play, the reader is the tragic hero. You leave this play with the sense of having seen something long hidden and obscured. I don't want what Leah and Chonen found, but I want to keep the candle of their love alight in my soul as I try to manage the treacherous currents of reality. Reading this play is like going to the crossroads with Robert Johnson -- it's important to see it, to know it, and to dance there, but you must finally choose your own road and walk into your own life to really play the blues.

A decent story... only

I own well over 50 motivational and inspirational books and this was one of the worst. The book was not "bad" however it was not educational, motivational or inspirational. If you would like to learn about the author and his life story this book is for you.

The coach I never had!

I find this book to be so motivational. Unlike other books in it's realm "The Greatness Gap" makes you feel as though the author is truly guiding you every step of the way. I never had the opportunity to play team sports, but I had a few great coaches in my life and appreciate the feeling of having someone in your court. Being in the prime of my career I feel lucky to have found a personal coach through the written word!! If you are motivated but unsure what your next move should be I emplore you to pick up this book!!

Drawing on a vast amount of archival material in the United States, Great Britain, and France, Craig Lloyd unfolds the vibrant story of an African American who sought freedom overseas. Lloyd provides a new look at the black expatriate community in Paris, taking readers into the cabarets where Bullard rubbed elbows with Josephine Baker, Louis Armstrong, and even the Prince of Wales. Lloyd (history, Columbus State Univ.) explores the extraordinary life of Eugene Bullard (1895-1961), the first black wartime aviator and celebrated prize fighter, musician, and decorated member of the French foreign legion and the French airforce in World War I. Beginning with his birth in Georgia, the author charts Bullard's boyhood, his flight from home, and his emigration to Scotland and then to Paris as a stowaway in 1912. There, in the city's tolerant racial climate, Bullard soaked up the cabaret scene and mingled with jazz stars Sidney Bechet and Josephine Baker. Lloyd continues with Bullard's role in the French fight against Nazism during World War II and his flight to New York in 1940, where he battled racism until his death and was awarded the Croix de Guerre. Providing excellent background material, especially about Paris after World War I, Lloyd adds substantially to Bullard's unpublished memoirs and the thinly researched first biography of Bullard by P.J. Carisella and James W. Ryan, The Black Swallow of Death (1972. o.p.). Lloyd, a history professor, takes the life of an exceptional individual and explores his universe, one with which we are generally familiar as Americans, from an unusual perspective. At the end of the nineteenth century, Bullard escaped the Jim Crow practices of his native Georgia and stowed away in a ship bound for Germany. He reinvented himself in Europe, becoming a prize fighter, dance-troupe entertainer, and jazz band drummer as he traveled between Berlin, Paris, and Moscow. He settled in France, adopting its culture and fighting on its behalf in World War I, even earning citizenship with his heroism as a fighter pilot. But the presence and prejudice of white American soldiers when the U.S. entered the war provided Bullard with painful reminders of the racism he left behind him. Still, Bullard prevailed, becoming a popular Jazz Age entertainer and working for the French Resistance during World War II. Important story

This is an important story that needs to be more widely told. The writing style is thick and seems more carefully academic than it needs to be. It might be a better fictional novel in order to get the important points across with regard to the continuing racism of the US and how it even pervaded France from US tourists through the racism encountered when he returned to the US. Regardless, it is an incredible story worth reading and I highly recommend it. I also recommend reading Queen Bess about the first black female pilot, Bessie Coleman.

A forgotten hero not deserving to be forgotten!

A very well documented biography on a genuine American and French hero. Unfortunately he was born during the Jim Crow era in the south (even though the constitution which was written over 100 years before his birth mentions "all men are created equal", this did not include any non-caucasian's or women, did it? Did not use the word minority since it denotes less than some majority, there are more non-caucasian's in the world anyway and what is really meant by that word is just that, non-caucasian. I find it odd that the USA was founded by European descendants like the English, French and even though the country prided itself on it's progresive nature, it did not include equality, even though Europe itself did not practice racial discrimination). He was born the seventh child of a large family and his father always had a premonition of a very distinguished future for him and let it be known to him when he was young. Talks about his travel through the south after he left home and was told early by his father of a country (France) where all men are truly free. This had a profound effect on him because he eventually made it to France via England first.
He began his livelyhood as a theatre performer and boxer; two opposing and similar avocations. He joined the military and became the first Black American and Black Frenchman aviator and was awarded medals for his bravery, dedication and skills. Very well liked, he had a contagious personality and started working at a famous Paris club later in life and eventually became a club owner himself. He met the famous of the day like Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Langston Hughes, Bricktop and many others. This biography also got me interested in Jazz age Paris to request both autobiographies of Hughes and Bricktop.
Slowly (too slowly) more is being known about this man and his acomplishments and contributions to the human race.
You won't be able to put it down. Jack Johnson's autobiography "In the Ring and Out" is another good bio of that era too.

Bullard's definitive biography

Eugene Bullard was an African American man who was born in 1895 in Columbus, Georgia, and lived a really fascinating live. After leaving the U.S. in 1912 to escape the existing suffocating racist oppression, he stayed first in Britain, and then settled in France where he lived as a boxer, entertainer, jazz drummer, was a war hero in the trenches in Verdun, and become the first African American combat pilot in 1917 (in French service: the U.S. would allow black combat pilots only in 1941...). After the war, like so many other African Americans, he remained in Europe. He become a well known entrepeneur in the Parisian night club life during the 20s and 30s. At the German invasion in 1940, and after a brief stint in the French army, he went back to the U.S. where he died in New York in 1961. Revered in France as a national hero during is life, and completely unknown in his country until more than twenty years after his death, the life of this extraordinary man has in this book a much deserved homage and, probably, its definitive biography.

This book should be on the national curriculum- how different the world would be if each of us had an honest conversation about death and dying with a wise person, as we headed into our adult lives. This book is just such a conversation, and helps me remember, and shows me how, to live my life fully, in right relationship with the certain knowledge that it will someday end. Frank's writing is beautiful; personal, intimate, at times laced with a self-deprecating humour. I'll be buying copies for all the twenty-somethings in my life!

Thank you for your beautiful book.

I was captivated by The Five Invitations, reading it cover-to-cover in a 24-hour period. As I got closer to the end, I found myself reading much slower because I just didn't want it to end. I was inspired by the stories of people both young and old at the end of their lives. The part that impressed me was that it was not just stories of inspiration on how I can embrace my days, but also I found wisdom as a new mom, and how to savor these moments with my little one more. There was a chapter about grief that hit me in a way that was very profound and moving, it opened up a place in my heart about a the loss of a dear friend many years ago, that just hadn't healed. Reading Frank's book gave me a new understanding on how to "be" with that loss and feel complete with it's incompleteness. Thank you for your beautiful book.

The Five Invitations: A True Gift to the World : A Guide for Living and Dying

Having heard Frank Ostaseski speak at a mindfulness conference a year ago, I was deeply moved by his compassion, wisdom, vulnerability and heart-centered service to the dying and their families. Upon hearing that Frank had written a book about "what death can teach us about living fully." I felt confident his writings would be a sacred guide and gift to the world.
When reading Frank's newly released book this week, I have found his writing to be very congruent with his " in person" teachings. What a treasure to have this resource. So whether a person is facing a life-threatening illness, is a compassionate caregiver, is facing other challenges of loss or is looking for a way to live a life of true meaning and purpose, Five Invitations is an exceptional guide for embracing the ever changing terrain of the human experience.
As I savored each chapter of The Five Invitations, I felt like I was in the same room as Frank, having a very intimate conversation of what matters most on the journey of life and death. I also found Frank's stories of serving individuals and families at Zen Hospice Project of San Francisco to make a lasting imprint on my heart and soul.
To summarize The Five Invitations, firstly, Frank shares the importance of living now, not putting life on hold, along with the fact that all of life is ever changing and is impermanent. Secondly, Frank encourages us to move towards our suffering and to welcome all things.. The Third Invitation is to bring our entire being to all of life's experiences, including our strengths and challenges, in other words, the light and the dark. Fourthly, Frank encourages us to find ways to embrace a place of stillness, peace, comfort and centeredness, which will ultimately help us to be with physical and/or psychological discomfort, chaos, and uncertainty. As the Fifth Invitation, Frank's shares his wisdom of how to be open to life, to surrender to what is and to embrace life fully with a sense of wonder in the here and now.
